In response to my comment below I see in your valve check video you cover top dead center on compression. Might have been a good idea to let it be known to be sure and watch that video first. Good videos !!
@21jammer219 жыл бұрын
Why didn't you mention top dead center compression stroke as a guide to get things back in place when re installing the cam ? Not to mention cleaning the areas of the bike above the engine so no dirt or debris drops into the motor. Important steps !!
@CoteMotorcycles9 жыл бұрын
J Sequeira We assumed people would watch the valve inspection video first and if they didn't they would know (such as yourself) to have the engine at Comp TDC. There's no reason to rotate the engine after the cam is out when doing a valve adjustment. Cleaning the area before getting into the valve cover is a good idea but good maintenance starts at washing your bike after every ride or at least before doing any work. Thanks for the good pointers!

Hope this isnt a dumb question.......What would the symptoms be to check valve clearance on a 2004 crf250r? Bike is currently hard to kick start but can be roll started. Thanks
@CoteMotorcycles9 жыл бұрын
Not at all. More than likely you will need intake valves. If you have 0 clearance on your intakes the valves are shot and should not simply be adjusted, could cost you a lot more than a couple valves in the future.

I’ve got a question, so I bought my 2010 crf250r locked up and it came with a pro circuit cam in it and I’m not sure if it’s still the same valve gap or if it’s different. I did the stock gap and it’s not staying running. It only stays running if keep in on the throttle
@CoteMotorcycles2 жыл бұрын
I’m betting it’s not your valve clearance. Could be the timing. If your cam chain is stretched or the cam lobes moved a bit you’ll get a condition like you’re describing. Make sure you’re checking clearance on the compression stroke also. Not something goofy like the idle set too low?
@bisnonnocanapa10 жыл бұрын
and what if the recorded valve clearence is zero because in the moment of disassembly the valve is touching the cam?

I retimed my 2007 crf 250r just like this and my engine either does nothing or is backfiring after I give it gas. Do you know if the crank shaft has to rotate 720 degrees for the piston to do a full cycle? Because, is it possible my piston was at bottom dead center when I retimed my bike? Thank you for any help.
@CoteMotorcycles3 жыл бұрын
720 is correct. Your piston needs to be at TDC on the compression stroke. Your intake valve will open and then your piston will come up to TDC compression. Use the stator timing mark to make sure you’re at TDC. The second mark on the stator is TDC. Then make sure your cam is lined up.

Brady Lemons If you don't torque the cam holder bolts properly or get some debris on the shim/bucket ect it can throw your specs out. Another question, I am planning on re shimming the valves. Again my clearances were all zero, so if I use the equation given will it still likely work to calculate the appropriate shim sizes? Should I go even smaller than the calculated values as the clearance could be technically less than zero? Or will it just come down to trial and error with shim sizes.. let me know. Thanks!
@CoteMotorcycles4 жыл бұрын
You'll have to toss new valves in it and just go with the shims you had before to get a measure. Then you can get exact. Sorry for the late reply! Thanks for watching! Please thumbs up and share!

if your valve is showing zero clearance, does it always need to be replaced?
@CoteMotorcycles4 жыл бұрын
If you have stainless steel valves you can probably get away with resetting clearance. With oem titanium valves 0.006” is a lot of material and the hardness of the valve face is completely gone so you’ll only get a few hours of run time until the clearance is gone again. Make sure you clean your air filter EVERY ride and try not to rev the piss out of your motor to keep your valves in spec longer.
@connork.5574 жыл бұрын
@@CoteMotorcycles thanks for the reply, I'm assuming my valves are oem. Small chance they arnt because the previous owner didn't take awesome care of it. I'm currently leaning towards selling it and getting a 2 stroke. Thanks again!

Valves need to be checked on a regular basis. If your back back fires alot or pops and bangs when you let of the throttle then I recommend checking valve clearances straight away. Last thing you want is the piston to hit the valves

i have a 2005 honda crf450 and i was told the last owner was riding it for 2 hours and it just stopped working on him and he couldn't kick start it. now i have it and i can hear it has compression, it has spark, new oil and gas. the carburetor could use a cleaning but i even tried starting fluid and nothing worked. pushing it while in gear and pulling in the clutch is almost impossible without the back wheel just being locked and sliding. the last owner said i needed a bottom end rebuild and a few other people said to adjust the valves and check the air intake. any idea on what i should do? i would take it to a shop but i don't have the money.

i am thinking of buying a 2004 crf250x, is there anyway to tell if the valves are going in while test riding the bike?
@CoteMotorcycles10 жыл бұрын
The x's didn't seem to be as bad for chewing through valves. If the bike is hard starting it will be a good indication of a compression issue that may involve the valves. If the seller says he's adjusted the intake valves and has the old valve shims, it's probably going to need valves. Hope that helps and good luck!
@williamjones675110 жыл бұрын
ok i have also watch the piston/rings video as well, could smoking at 1/2- 3/4 throttle indicate a ring replacement?
@CoteMotorcycles10 жыл бұрын
Could be. Hard to diagnose over KZbin. Could smoke from a head gasket problem, rings, jetting issues, ect, ect. It's a good idea to do the top end on any used bike purchased for the simple reason of peace of mind. Lots of people lie unfortunately to make a sale. There's lots of good info on forums such as thumper talk you can use to make an informed decision.

Great instructional video. How much free play is allowed on the decompression lever? Mine can wiggle from side to side but still seems to function okay. Have never had any problems kicking it over. I thought it was weird that my exhaust valves were out of spec (0.25mm for the left, which is on the edge of spec and 0.23mm on the right) and not my intake valves (.09mm for both left and right). Could free play in my decompression lever be wearing that right exhaust valve down quicker since it is on that side? Any suggestions? Thanks!
@CoteMotorcycles8 жыл бұрын
Doubtful the decompression lever has anything to do with your valve clearance changing. It has no effect on anything once the motor is running. The exhaust clearances usually move around due to carbon deposits ect. Double check your manual or the Google for decompressor clearance. Thanks for watching.

The formula in the video may be recommended by honda, but wouldnt D-(C-B)=A, or (B+C)-C=A be a better solution? Of course honda would recomend the least simple solution they could think of. If the shims need to be replaced, subtracting the spec clearance from the measured one will give u a negative thickness, then by adding that negative, ur really subtracting anyway, and without a calculator, thats twice u have used the longest way to solve the equation, it seems almost backwards, maybe due to the international common core system influence now days, Idk, it may be the best formula to use in production and assembly, (or if the shim is broken to bits, or someone installed a smaller shim than what was needed, or the old one was missing bc it wasnt put back in, lost, etc), but its clearly not the best one for replacing shims after some valve wear, and Im gonna use my old fashioned American common sense to make things easy every chance I get. Dont get me wrong, Im not putting down the maker of this video, its nice of him to take the time to put this out to benefit his fellow mechanics and riders, its honda that suggests that formula, and just like alot of things these days, more complex than it has to be.
