I'm a Native Cantonese speaker raised in mostly the United States and other places. I already knew all these from my own mom and dad. This video simply clarified what I was already inferred or suspected, in regards to the meanings. My dad said a lot of those words when he was driving.

LOL, for nearly 40 years, as a Brit who has never been to HK, I only know a few words on Cantonese thanks to a HK guy I went to university with. It's interesting to see them written down all these years later.

Your dad actually means "mother of the family" or "mother of the kids" when he calls your mom "lo4 mo2" 老母. But lo mo is actually not a very polite way to say "mother". Most people would say "ma1 mi6" 媽咪 or ma6 ma1 媽媽, instead. 老 means old, 母 is a very old way to say mother. But in Cantonese since the term "老母" is often abused by people when they curse, it becomes a not very polite term. When standing alone, "母" is very polite which is pronounced as mo4, not mo2.

To those learning from the jyutping system: This guy has named the tones a little differently. What you call 4(lowest tone), this guy calls 6; what you call 5(low rising tone), this guy calls 4; what you call 6(low flat tone), this guy calls 5. Thanks for the video btw, learnt a lot ^^

As a former MI guy whose taken some courses at the Defense Language Institute, I say one of the priorities of learning any language in the military by the soldiers was a list of good cuss words. My favorite Cantonese phrase I'll always say to my Chinese mother in law when it's pouring rain outside, "lok gau-si'...which means 'It's raining dog-shit'...she always laughs with that.

NO. I order the six tones so as to preserve their relative pitch ranking. Other tone ordering are "WRONG". "ALL" linguists do not understanding the relative pitches of the six tones in Cantonese. They wrongly believe that Cantonese is nothing more than a variant of Mandarin, when in fact, Cantonese is a language that relies heavily on relative pitches, not only tonal changes. Mandarin, on the other hand, relies heavily on tonal changes within a single word and not much on relative pitches.
