Darrell has always been so cool and appreciative of his life, and never had a beef with anyone as far as I know. He was a great competitor, but got sponsored by being good to others, not just being a jerk like many others. Guys like him made bmx great. These are the guys that got sponsored to SELL BIKES. The good racers that didn't have consistent sponsorships, were usually hot heads that didn't treat their fans well, and so were not liked by the kids and thus no sales. Darrell was fun to race, fun to hang out with, liked by everyone and his sponsors liked him and probably still. And of course, could ride a damn bike. Cheers to you my man. - Billy

As an east coast guy in Virginia.. DY is Mr. JMC. I had a Black Shadow with DY bars.. I still have the bars. I never saw him race live.. but the magazine pics just made him look like the smoothest rider out there. Great episode!

21:44 I was at Vallejo BMX practicing as a 12 Novice the next week after that race and remember Mr. Anderson saying the name with some reverence because he never heard of DY and he beat Richie...That was my introduction to the name Darrell Young.

I remember being at the Team Murray world cup and someone told me DY tore down a sign at a hotel and made a ramp with it.

Hearing how quickly DY started winning races (and went from "cherry picker" to expert), I was waiting to hear what got him into BMX in the first place, and then what mighr have been his "secret" to becoming so good so fast. I heard him say he would be at an upcoming event "unless I have moto that weekend", so has he been a lifelong motocross rider (beginnning pre-BMX), and that was what led him into BMX and developed his skills? I know, for myself, like every kid, riding a bike was "what you did" as a kid, and then one day my next-older brother brought home a copy of BMX Action (coincidentally, the July '79 issue with JMC-mounted Harry Leary), and, credit to Oz and the BMXA crew, I was instantly hooked on the sport. And, even though we had a local track that started up (and hosted the Redline Summer Tour in '80, which I missed because my Grandpa passed the day before), I was still a late arrival on the racetrack, because I wanted to be "good enough" (skill-wise, equipment-wise, etc.) before lining up on the gate with/against anyone else. And some of that, too, was limited (even back then) by costs (bike, gear, ABA membership, etc.), and I was the youngest of seven kids, so there wasn't money in our family to buy those things, so I had to earn the money to pay for everything, which I'm sure a lot of riders can relate/attest to. Anyway, by the time I finally started racing, I was riding a "good bike", and I had practiced enough (riding the track on "off days", etc.) that I kind of "hit the ground running", and I quickly got a reputation as "one to watch", enough so that, at my first race at the "big city track" (Des Moines, IA), one of my buddies told me he overheard the team manager for probably the biggest bike shop in the atate at that time tell someone in the pits that they "had their eye on me". And that was really my first time at a big(ger) race. But that made me feel good that my hard work was being recognized. Sorry for the "long story", but, like I said, with DY being so successful on rhe track so quickly, it just made me wonder what led him to BMX, and then "why" was he so fast so quickly when he started racing.
