I don't know if you can get it where you live but, I buy 2ft by 2ft pieces of MDF board that is 1/4th inch thick. I have the hardware store cut it into four pieces that are 12 inch by 12 inch. It cost about me about 4 us dollars. So its only around $1.00 for each 12 by 12 inch piece. I just prime my board with run off from my previous painting.

Sadly I can't get boards cut here. Tried all over the island. But accurate or neat cutting is not something that is seen as necessary in the Caribbean! Maybe I should just flow with it ;-)
@angelsandfaes7 жыл бұрын
Deby at Acrylic Pouring that shouldn't be funny I know but I've been to the Caribbean so I understand what your saying. there is a sort of laid back personality there. which isn't always a bad thing. But that does make it difficult because canvases are expensive. Thank you for sharing with us
@georginaevans36587 жыл бұрын
Hi. I use these too and have had the same problem. To stop it bowing whilst the paint sets I sit it on one central cup which help it's natural tendancy to bow. Once the design sets and you set it aside to cure it will still bow but once fully cured cover with some heavy books to flatten out. Hope this helps as it is so disappointing to lose such a beautiful pour.☺️

I have only done one painting on a canvas panel and I had the same problem with it bending and warping. But, once completely dry, I was able to carefully bend it back to shape. And once spray coated with clear enamel it has not warped again. It's an economic alternative to canvas but the bending and warping is a problem. I loved this painting. Particularly before the gold came through and seemed to dominate. I like the purplish blue tones much more -but- it's still a really great painting....nice job.

Here is a Paul Shepherd handling technique: Take a strip of duck tape. Pinch it together in the middle. Stick the remaining two loose ends to the back of your canvas board or piece to be painted. The pinched together part makes a handle to grip and hold your work with while you do your tilting of the piece. 4 handles on a larger piece. When your work is dried just peel the duck tape off. With this you can tilt in any direction while keeping your hands away from the running paint.

If you have thrift stores in your area, you might be able to pick up some used record albums very cheaply to use as your "canvas" instead of the canvas boards. Just clean the albums with alcohol. You can cover the middle hole with a sticker and gesso that middle circle and you will be good to go.

This video has been so helpful to me; I've just come from the craft store where I considered those panels because, like you, I need to pay attention to cost since I'm just starting on this venture....I opted out and now so glad I did. So far I've gathered what's available at the Dollar Store and at Home Depot for the Floetrol. I know I'm going to become addicted to this and now I'm glad that I lived alone and won't hear any criticism for a husband about time and money. LOL. Your video is wonderful, I was right there with you and understood each and every part, so thanks.

At first it looked like a person bowling but as soon as you said billy goat I saw it! That’s pretty cool isn’t it? I really like the shapes in it. It’s a shame the canvas bowed but I still like it anyway. The colors you used are beautiful. You have to be soooo... careful with black though,it always wants to take over. I’m a little saved to use black but this helped me since the black didn’t take over as much as I thought it would. Maybe I’ll try to experiment with black more. I think the painting came out well. Thank you for sharing your beautiful pour creation, and process. This was a fascinating watch I have to try! I love your initial piece, and understand the utter frustration of product fail. Your idea is wonderful, and I hope you try this pour on a durable substrate. I am a mixed media artist, who loves opalescent techniques in my work. I would be interested in clear media that would open up a pour to deep areas of transparent colour showing throught layers, the way opals do in nature. Please feel free to share with me any recommend products towards this end. Have you ever tried a pour on plexiglass? I think it would be amazing to see both sides of a pour! Plexiglass is inexpensive, and can be cut into many shapes. Would clear gesso help slow down the sliding on a plexiglass substrate? Just sharing some questions and ideas. Thank you for inspiring me with your amazing pours!

I've seen people do pours on glass and the underside is always a bit disappointing compared to the top. A swipe might be fun though. Thanks Shelley. I tried all sorts of suggestions but in the end I just decided that the canvas panels just weren't good for pouring. Its so sad to make a good painting and then lose it to warping that I decided it wasn't worth the risk. Economy canvases are so cheap anyway these days.

To keep the details, take a pic (13 Mpixel res and up) save to your computer, and you can enjoy the 'when it was wet' look. A pic of the finished (dark) one you can take pic, then open in IrFanview, go 'Image', 'Resize', then go 'Image', 'Color Correction' and increase contrast, gama, and color to where it will look 100% better. The video was perfect.

Hi Deby I have a question (and I'm sorry if it sounds so obvious (I'm such a newbie). When you do the corners - is it straight paint or mixed with the medium? Deby at Acrylic Pouring-I just saw a cool movie called “Passengers” with Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence. There is a brilliant line at the end which I think is apropos in all walks of life, but especially pertinent here. The quote is, “You can’t get so hung up on where you’d rather be that you forget to make the most of where you are.” To me, an important component in art, specifically in abstract art, is imagination. Okay, you live on an island that doesn’t have all the components that the mainland does and they don’t cut straight. Look at where you are and make the most of what you’ve got. Make that part of your art’s story. Make it a character. You live in what many would consider a paradise. Instead of your canvas warping, you might say it melted in the hot sun filtering through the palm trees at the beach. If the people at the lumber store didn’t cut your board perfectly square and even, say whatever shape it is was a deliberate idea. Hey, it’s the relaxed, island way of doing things. None of that stressful usage of rulers and levels, right? Personally, I thought using the Floetrol by itself as the medium to deliver your glitter was more creative than I think you imagined. It was sort of like your 5th “color.” It was white when on the wet canvas, which was beautiful, but when it dried clear, it revealed all that lovely gold paint underneath, hiding like buried treasure. One person saw a decaying horse in that gold part, so that could lend to the story of why the canvas melted. This can go to all artists out there. Whenever you have a piece you think didn’t go as you planned, challenge yourself to imagine it in a different light. New perspectives and happy accidents, perhaps? You never know where it will lead! Thank you for sharing, Deby. Looking forward to more “happy accidents.”
@AcrylicPouring7 жыл бұрын
I love your imagination and stories. I've never been able to think that way, I'm a bit too logical. In fact Spock is my nickname! If I could make stories behind my art like those, people would be much more interested I think. I really love your comment, thank you.

I've tried everything! All the suggestions including this one, and still the panels bow and warp when they get wet. They aren't that much cheaper than an economy canvas anyway, so I think its better to work with a frame to be sure you don't get nasty suprises.

Hi Deby. I think your brave showing your work and this piece isn't a failure. The colours aren't my choose but it worked well. I use cheap canvases and I'm sure you could get them on line and too be honest for this project they turn out fine. Is Hubby not able to cut wood for you? Ive used 1/2 inch MDF and also plywood thin sheets, both work well. Money is tight here so I often scrounge waste wood, last MDF came off a pallet. Keep 'em coming..... PS love hearing the accent again..... have to say it reminds me of the ... Wurzels.... :-)

Can you get plywood? And get someone to cut it into pieces for you? Far less likely to bow than cardboard canvases and thin masonite. That pour is lovely...wonderful colors! Even 1/8th inch thick plywood is not likely to bow enough to bother your acrylic pours.
@AcrylicPouring7 жыл бұрын
Sadly on the island there is no place that can cut the wood nicely or accurately enough. Caribbean style is rather more 'relaxed'. I've been asking around because I can get the wood, I just can't get it cut. Shame because I think it would be the perfect answer.
