Music production is about more than music theory, you can be an excellent musician but if you know nothing about production and the tools, your great skill at playing won't translate to a mix or sound that people want to hear.

Scenario: you make a trap beat. You get some local chick to sing on it. She writes a hook with 2 words in it, nothing major. Track blows up locally and a label wants to sign it. What the most important part of the track? The beat? The drum programming? The keys? No. It's those two words in hook. Thats the top line and what is recognized as THE SONG. Thats where the money is, right there. If the label wants to cut you out (because you're a small time nobody with no connections, lawyers etc...) it's easy. Get someone else to recreate the beat. They'll change a drum sound here, do and edit there, boom.. new track that you have nothing to do with it. The person they cant cut out is the person who came up with the top line. That local chick who sung 2 words! She's getting paid and if she looks good she's getting the deal, not you, the dude that put the whole thing together. The only way to guarantee you get paid as a producer is to be so locked in to a song that they cant cut you out. ALWAYS co-write the hook or song with the artist. Insist on it. Or sign an agreement BEFORE you let them write on it that you get 25% publishing as well as a fee. PUBLISHING and live performance is the only money left out there. Thank me later.
@SuperALBSURE10 жыл бұрын
James Thompson I'm telling you how it is, you're telling me how it might be. The reality is, regardless of how creative an endeavour beat making is the actual setup of the MUSIC BUSINESS doesn't respect that. The actual BUSINESS see's the sound bed behind the vocal / melody and words as just instrumentation rather than the song. Which is why a beat maker will typically get very little publishing (if any!) and the top line writer will get publishing rights to the song. A friend of mine wrote the top line and hook to a no.1 record a few years back. He didnt produce the beat. He got a third of the publishing. Who do you think made more money, him or the beatmaker? Do you understand that everytime that song gets played on a radio anywhere in the world the dude gets a THIRD of the publishing cheque? Where is the beatmaker in that? The fact is, the kanye's, puffy's etc... are using beatmakers for ideas, taking their publishing for a quick bit of money and the beatmakers are to young, foolish and eager without understanding the BUSINESS. When you wake up every morning just recite these 3 words. PUBLiSHING, PUBLISHING, PUBLISHING! Figure out how make to sure you are a featured writer on every song that has your beat in it. Thats how you really get paid nowadays. That is the reality. Also, note this. A singer can be replaced yes, but if the singer WROTE the top line that is the hit song you cant mess with that person. Thats the point. They have the power because they wrote the song. In your example, the Winans got paid more than Whitney for that song. Every time Whitney performed it the Winans got paid, not Whitney. Pharell wrote Happy, doesnt matter who sings it he gets paid. You can not divorce the rights to perform or record a song from the writer, you cannot cut them out. Thats why songwriting (i.e. publishing) is the most important and lucrative part of the industry. Which is why beat makers are routinely CUT out of it by savvy managers and industry people. Finally, when cd's were selling for $20 dollars everyone got paid because the producer (who was often the beatmaker) got paid out of the "mechanicals" part of the royalty. Now that hardly any one buys music the mechanicals are tiny. But radio, spotify, pandora etc... have to pay publishing to the songwriter still so that part of the business has been unaffected. Thats why they still earn money while everyone else is having a hard time.

True dat!!!!! That's why years ago I started writing my own beats, orchestrations, filler pads, lyrics, bkgrnd vocals, hooks, solos and paper lead sheets. Total compositions of any music style on the Triton Extreme. Then I burn video over the song, lock in the copywrite, ..... A done deal. ....Mine forever.

SuperALBSURE Yo you seem like a guy with some answers I may be looking for. I'm in the middle of making a mixtape, I'm a singer(soul, RnB). I make all my beats and write all my lyrics. But between you and I, I'm a really good singer, so I know my stuff is gonna be dope when I finish. If I do this all on my own, can I just put them online somewhere? DO I have to do any copyright stuff? I should be good as long as it has my name on it, right? Like on spotify or soundcloud? My dream is to be able to make music fora living(like most of us here) but is it a bad idea to not sell my music? I've seen artists nowadays getting hype from a mixtape if its good. Chance the Rapper is the first to come to mind. I just feel that the exposure would be better than the money that only a few people would dish out.

Love this video. The reason why we as producers get taken advantage of when it comes to the "industry" is because we allow it. Why are all producers trying to reach the few thousands of artists at the top when theres a million artists worldwide who will buy your beats. This is why I advise all producers to try the EDM route. Then you're the producer AND the artist. Granted you don't get all the money for expenses, but you'll get famous for what you made rather than some rapper who sings stuff others have written for them. No disrespect to actual rappers or singers, but the big names are getting out of hand getting big off someone else's art.

Wow man. Thank you very much for this vid. I mean, I am in production for like 2 years trying to do original and badass shit, but I know that music production is not just music production, it is knowing your shit in and out. Right now, I am small, but I am gonna be fucking big and that's because there are people like you sharing important information like that. I know that soundcloud or stuff like that don't do that kind of justice when we speak about money. I mean, I love doing music because of doing music, music producers are carrying ideas on the backs of their tracks, the whole new culture may be derived from an idea and style, from culture emerges lifestyle that is given in certain point of civilizations life-span... and on and on.. But to do this kind of important work, we need money, money brings satisfaction of our needs, our equipment, our life together. Man, I mean, I must do my shit on an overheating laptop that is being cooled by fan and I must do my music half-way on almost without listening to it because my CPU can't take more than like 5 - 6 layers/components of a song being reproduced at once. And that is not fair my friend. Not to mention the struggle with society, when you know just one more person doing shit that you are doing, when nobody even values art as a form... when you live in savage lands. Now that's a struggle, but, no guts no glory eh ? :)

I never looked at it like that, but he is so so true! Im an up and comming producer that is looking to make a living off of my music and this has inspired me to continue on my path to making great music in this genre. One other thing he did not mention is movies as well. You can license your music in independent films and what not. That is a very lucrative industry alot of these guys no little of. So he is correct without the beat, there is nothing and nothing moves you until the beat is played. People listen to the beat 1st then the hook then lyrics pull you in. Its like that and thats the way it is...

The biggest reason producers ain´t getting paid is that we have some of our own people, producers, giving their shit away for free, devaluating our work. Big artists get 1000s of beats every month in their email, from people desperate to get heard, saying "use my beat for free", and they just gave away a potential hit.

I just finished the series "How to be a super producer fast" I am 40 yrs old. EVERYTHING he said is DEAD ON preachers and all. I also quest for understanding of a wide field but my research has nowhere near the drive of this man.I'm more of a robot more about technical understanding but I understand food for the soul and just got reminded. I must say his intent is complete. He addresses the spiritual aspect that must be Fed before any undertaking of this type can be done with expectation of nervana (success).What you give is what you get.I RECOMMEND starting with said series. I've always known the meaning of life( TO FIND INNER PEACE WITH ONES PERCEPTION OF SELF) but I've never heard it explained so completely. I applaud you POST. I don't think people actually understand that these videos contain life lessons. I think you should do a self help traveling seminar marketed to black youth. NO MUSIC.

There's a very powerful movement in the music industry who are brainwashing those of us who make the music to think that the product we produce should be thought of as no more than a advertising tool, and that it should be given away for 'free', and that the money for the artist is to be generated by touring, selling merchandise -tee shirts cups etc, and hard copies of the music to the 'Urber fans' that the artist can generate. Of course if there's no live show, then there's very little else, unless you can get some licensing deals for film or tv. Music Producers from the very top to the very bottom need to realize that as was the case years ago with the big record companies, there are now new parties acting in collusion, who have the intention to con the producers out of their just reward. Companies such as Spotify & Pandora are key players in this, giving the producers and song writers peanuts for exploiting their music! You've highlighted here that 1/4 of the money generated from steaming gets paid to a company to distribute it to a label, which in turn will see to it that eventually some of what's left will trickle down to the producer, well 25% is obviously not enough if the music is the product. As good streaming is as a distribution system, streaming is not what people who subscribe to these companies are doing it for. It's down to those who make the music not to be conned again by the new shark on the block. We need to demand a fair price for our produce. Name one other industry where those who produce the key component on which the industry is based are expected to work for free, while every other dependent off-shoot in that industry gets to eat off of the proceeds generate of that one's labor. - Great video - more producers need to shout out loud so that the message can be heard and understood!
@Arden7one7 жыл бұрын
Woooooord! And its from the Postmaaan! I looove your energy mate! Made my day for wrapping up together all that for me, cuz I really needed to hear my thoughts back from a wise mouth, at least! With the nowadays ocean of information, and all these scary, presumptions, assumptions, and thoughts that we (as future producers) already kind of feared to be true, are as you just displayed also and our possibilities to be exploited, and reasons to try even harder to stay true & real to your own principals and point of judgment, while being awake. And stick together those like minded people, cuz on the flip side of it, apparently when you look in to it positively - is glorious! But as for now, I've tended to stare at the negatives as a usual creatively depressed by the industry creative person (as they say, many days - many ways, but erry day we tend/seem to choose the dead onez), and this video was exactly what I needed. To inspire myself! Cuz with all tha darkness happening around the "creative music world" we live in.. tc tc tc, u said it bro - its just grose! And a last thing before it gets too cheesy - hey man, don't you try to stay humble, cuz I can play you back the reversed psychology side of it too, just like the producer is the root to all tha shaize above it, 3 years down the road from when you actually spoke on the subject here, and yet, never too late, still today you managed to really EQ my confidence like a pro today, and shown me the Ying in the Yang, and the Yang in the Ying, inside out the music industry, moreover - things already familiar to my dark-dark conscious! How very embarrassing, huh? :D Anyways, thanks for the food for thoughts bro, and I'd stick around your team for further intel! Bless the real ones!

You sir, just got yourself a Subscribe. Great video. I'm a hobbyist producer, artist, film guy... and also a doctor lol. Well I'm in my 3rd year of medical school at least, not a doc yet. You hit the nail right on the head man. People respect my medical career but not my musical ambitions and I do have a problem with that. Music and writing and art in general is what I love to do and it's hard at times forcing my artistic brain to learn the hard sciences of medicine, only to be respected more for what I am pretending to be (scientist) and not necessarily what I truly am (artist). As a matter of fact, I have to artistically spice up the material so my brain can learn science. I'm creating my own medical study program that teaches medicine in an artistic way. Anyway, great video man. Keep up the good work.

I hear you loud and clear bro...big up to all the producers out there! But you forget one thing, without those other people in the chain the producer is worth jack. It's a chain and everyone is as important as the next.
@RyHmusic19 жыл бұрын
Just look at it this way. In biology, an entire food chain would not survive without bottom-level food producers (like grass). However, EVERY LEVEL of the chain is dependent on each other. (e.g if all of the first-level consumers died, the producers would also die off.) Anyways, what I'm trying to get at is: Yes, all of the other branches of music depend on the producer. BUT that also means that the *music producers depend on the other branches as well*. What if, every DJ, every record label, and every single way to promote your music suddenly didn't exist? The producers would have no purpose to even make music, and there would be no way to promote the music.

I want to add to this info, that mechandise is a key way to make money for bands and musicians, and it's important to sell whatever you are offering at gigs and make the most of it whilst you are there, people then start to to see you as more of a brand and are more likely to buy your music.

I've always loved making beats. Unfortunately, I've always sold myself short... always told myself: "there's no way that this could be more than a 'hobby'."

Look. Making a beat became very simple technology. People think you need to cut some phrase from some music, put kicks and snares in the grid in your sequencer. Everybody thinks that everyone can do it in 5 minutes. That's why producers don't get paid. Then artists get your beat and play it wherever they perform. You need to be indispensable. Be a musician, go on stage with your artist.

OK but what about a band... We create our own sound ourselves. So our music is ours not a product of a MIDI track or DAW engineer. The DAW is for distribution and mixing of the music that we created.

without a daw you wont get your songs recorded and its a skill to produce/engineer a solid sounding track wether recording bands or producing your own......i play guitar but i didnt sculpt it or make the amp or effects i uses but i also produce on my mac and i make my own sounds from simple sound waves, theres the difference

a band produces music...its a production team

Definitely agree with you, but the problem is if a label wants your beat and you start making demands, they'll pass on you in a heart beat and get something similar from another producer for what they want to pay. Now if every producer was on the same page, that's a different story. But there's too many in-house producers and producers that are under contract already. The market is oversaturated with talented people, and a lot of those talented people are not educated and don't realize you can have control over the situation with labels or that independent is the better way. Yeah indie takes much longer and it's a lot harder, but when has anything with instant results ever lasted over something you worked hard for. Again, dope video. Wish more people understood this concept.

Replace "music producer" with any primary/base production, and you will get a copy of this vid. You can apply this to most things. But a nice marketing add for "Liveoffbeats"

Thanks for video Mr. Liveoffbeats. I really appreciate it. I can totally relate because I am an Artist myself. The Gallery system is as screwed up as the Music business. Especially when they're reselling Artist's art in Auctions.

I agree with a lot of the things this man says the only part I don't believe in is if we need producers the internet is fast in we don't actually need producers because a person can now become a producer and a artist just like J Cole he produces and writes his own music a lot of people can become exactly like that there is a lot of universities you can attend schools you can attend books you can learn from the internet courses it's so much to be honest it's not a one-sided career you can be an artist and a producer if you want

I have 2 words for ya. Those 2 words are; 'supply and demand'. Everything that is discussed in this video is supported by supply and demand. Learn simple economics and Capitalism. With that foundation develop your idea (that's the what). Then create a business plan (that explains the when, where, why, and how). When you answer the what, when, where, why, and how questions, then your ready for the market. Get yo money people. There are millions of folks just waiting to be separated from their money. Grate video by the way.

This man speaks the truth. I have about 100 beats here in my arse right? I know.. dat a whole lotta arse! But I only release 10 of those tracks. The tracks that pass my quality checks. WHY? You may wonder? Because it's unfair to all the other hard-workin' produkes to water the brew down with rushed thin beats which could possibly saturate the market & continue to de-value music. If any producer here wants a review of they beat, or just wants to have a bit of support, contact us now man.
