Random question How’s come street bikes don’t use plastic tanks like dirt bikes? Aside from a leaky petcock I haven’t seen em just deteriorate or break.. (I’m sure they do eventually).

Crashing at speed. Plastic tanks pop, metal ones buckle and deform.

Did you just make that up? There are plenty of “street” bikes with plastic (or composite) fuel tanks.
@malcolmdown9170

Probably due to the age of the tank. It’s made from metal and now evolution of modern materials and probably intervention of euro regulations have allowed it to be made from plastic/ composite materials. Don’t know for sure only guessing.

Whilst I appreciate this is an exercise in what can be achieved isn’t it likely this corrosion is from the inside ?

Some of those dents look more they came from it being kicked about in a garage than from a crash

Watching with interest.Its good to see what you can achieve with abit of skill and the right gear..Having said that,it would be quicker with nonails.

I am worried your piece is going to be 4-5 mm shorter, depending on the thickness of the part you traced

You love fabrication. Everyone loves fabrication. Delbolloks loves fabrics. Fix it, flog it. Fixed. Is the petcock area thicker or does it have some threaded inserts?

Why waste the time on such junk. Best to scrap the tank, probably scrap the whole bike.

@@dirtygarageguy Why not put your efforts into something useful; perhaps a road worthy bike rather than something from a scrap yard or should be in a scrap yard. You would never see Craig Jones putting time and materials into something of no value.

Am I missing something? Surely cutting up and repairing a tank only works when the tank needs repair ... or should we buy new tanks and damage them so they can be repaired ... We're getting a free (reiterate - *free*) demonstration on how to fix things; the cheaper it is for someone that opts to do something like that, the better, unless you're gonna fund the use of a better broken tank?
@UnCivilEngineerIRL

And another thing! (😂) What if you have a tank of some rare old bike that needs to be repaired? If you can't get a replacement you'd bin the bike? Moronic

No fiberglass no cotton underwear! And you should be drawing them templates out free hand. Not enough scrimmage especially from a x comrade. P.s it's a tasty bit of work so far. 👌
