Having worked on a fair share of these; when they actually fire and just stop, 11 times out of 10 it's the flame sensor or the max-temp sensor that's broken. Depending on the design sometimes you just have to reposition the flame sensor slightly by either bending the mount or twist the rubber shroud if it has one. Usually it's resistance based so it's easily tested by covering it/shining light on it and see if the resistance changes. The high-temp sensors use everything from normally open/normally closed to resistance, so harder to say without documentation. If they don't fire at all or burn funny it's usually dirty fuel and/or air -filter. Pretty rare with bad/clogged nozzle. The igniters tend to be pretty binary, they either work or not. On very rare occasions it's the control board that gone tits up.

Dad used to have a big one of these to heat his garage. Sounded amazing once it got going. Looked to my 10 year old eyes like a proper jet engine, all red, hot and noisy. Good times...

The brass bit you took apart is not an injector...it is an 3:20 atomiser, works the same way as a spray gun. The pump on the rear of the fan motor is in effect the air compressor, which is normally the problem of these machines.... the air pump weakens due to wear and the fuel mixture becomes too rich. You will probably find it will run fine on paraffin which will combust easier in a rich state. Focus on the air filter on the air pump intake if you want any chance of it running on diesel again 😎

what kind of paraffin it uses if usual paraffin is solid at room temp?

Please explain the difference between an injector and an atomiser.
@andrewpatterson5349

@@dirtygarageguy an injector uses pressurised fuel to inject the fuel to the combustion chamber, an atomiser works pretty much like a spray paint gun were the compressed air going through the nozzle mixes with the fuel to atomise it. I had a couple of those heaters back in the day and the biggest problem I had with them not firing up was a blocked air filter which feed the compressor pump inlet. Watching your video suggests that every thing else is working fine. Hope this helps Matt 😎

@@andrewpatterson5349 Thanks for that info, I've got an sip fireball 50 with that problem, so i'm gonna take a look at what you suggest (hope the compressor on the motor isn't worn out) as I do remember that adjusting the air pressure bleed screw had some effect but a choked filter or blocked inlet does make perfect sense.

Dirty fuel is the most common reason for a space heater not working. First thing to do is put fresh fuel in, then clean the fuel and air filters. Next clean the injector, after that give it a try, and bear in mind the pump pressure might need to be adjusted. If the pressure is too high, the fuel consumption will be very high. Heating oil is cheaper than diesel and works well. If still no good the pump will need to be stripped and checked. Problem with this type of heater is that parts may be very difficult to find.

Is there a 'magic eye' heat or photocell sensor that gets sooty enough through poor combustion to shut down the unit?
@bobp6742

@@bananabrooks3836 Yes, it's igniting but too much fuel is blowing out the flame causing all the smoke just needs the air pressure turned down.

@@bobp6742 ah thanks bob you must be right. not sure how you'd adjust the air pressure though without messing about winding the jet out to alter the venturi effect.

From what I see from the start up of this construction heat ( common term for these types of htg unit ) there a problem with the ignition electrode. I would tend to suspect the electrode gap is at issue, my guess to small gap and not position correct in front of the nozzle to sustain burning cycle. Heads-up oil burning heat have a constant ignition during the burn cycle. The short run cycle at start-up is all part of the combustion safety control ( the gayish plastic box you uncovered) not sensing a exstablished flame via a sensor ( refer to a cad cell ).

you're correct, although the co detectors don't actually go off until you hit silly levels. 50ppm for 4 hours continuously, for example. these heaters also consume the oxygen of the space they are in, and produce co2. only for use in well ventilated spaces.
