ill share a story, dale sr and bodine were buddies, dale got mad at him and they started wreckin all the time, jr was always lookin for his daddys attention, usually by getting in trouble, jr built model cars, his favorite was his driver geoff bodine..sr came home one night and saw the model, he flipped, said why you have his car?hes my fav driver dad, sr took him out by lake, took model and blew it up with fireworks.. true story..lol..jr was too young to understand..but didnt build his car anymore.

I grew up in Chemung, and went to his father Eli Bodine's race track. Geoff became the man he is for sure, and thankfully so. Geoff in this interview, and from his personal growth and growth in faith, is a hundred percent better man than he was in the 1970s.

Geoff Bodine is the most underrated driver in Nascar history. He was so good in the eighties and nineties, a consistent performer and a winner. He should have been inducted into the hall of fame 15 years ago

Hey, I know what you mean. I never liked the Bodine brothers.( I always pronounced his name Gee-Off) It wasn't personal. In any sport you have guys you root for and then you have guys you don't like. I disliked Jeff Gordon too. Didn't care much for DW either until he went up to the booth. I would shake all their hands today if I met them. It was what made the sport so enjoyable back in those days.

I am still amazed Jr. finally had Geoff on. I remember what you have said in the past. I watched Geoff's modified exploits around New England. Insane. He regrets being a jerk back in the day. I've heard him say it. He was cocky and focused. He wasn't staying around. He kicked ass and took the phone call to pack his bags. 1986 Daytona 500 CHAMPION! never can be taken away. It was tough liking this guy back in the day but if you look at the races he won proved to me he was a roader! Four Martinvilles, three poconos, all three road cources, the 1986 500. Not to mention a patriot who developed a new bobsled for the Olympic team that brought home gold!

As someone who's survived cancer 6x and has flatlined 3x in my life, I can personally attest that the experiences Geoff describes here with his dad (and other things) happen - they're real. *Incredibly* real, in ways that you don't even question if they happened. They did (and do)... Those of us who have seen a bit of the other side all have our stories to tell and again, Geoff is right about it being almost an obligation that we tell our tales to others so that perhaps another can be helped through them, too. Put it this way - when I'm asked if I "believe", I always say "no - I KNOW". When you've actually had the privilege of "meeting" Him, there's no doubt left in your mind - no believing necessary. :-) Y'all be safe, - Ed on the Ridge

I got my picture taken with Geoff as a kid in my hometown in NY as part of promoting the Watkins Glen race weekend around 1998 or 1999. From the house I grew up in, the Chemung Speedrome where Geoff and his brothers had their upbringing is no more than 10 - 15 minutes away. I worked parking & security at the majestic Watkins Glen International racetrack in my days as well. Because of these racing influences, they have made me a deep NASCAR far for life. No matter how the rules, drivers, or cars change, the same competitive spirit on the track can be seen through all generations and is why I will never turn my eyes away from the sport. But Geoff will forever be my favorite, the black #7 QVC 1:24 die-cast that my parents got for me when I was a kid still sits on display with me in my man cave.

After AJ Foyt had his bad wreck at Road America in 1990, I remember he said that while the rescue crews were digging him out of the dirt and cutting him out of the car, he saw and talked to his father (who had passed in 1983).

I've been a Geoff Bodine fan since the 1960's, hustling a big block modified around Shangri-la Speedway, in Owego NY. The competition was stout, only the best of the best were there, the list of drivers I saw there was a who's who of established and up and coming drivers. The 61 Valiant was way ahead of it's time with Geoff and his team's ideas. Thanks for the memories, glad you're still kickin'.

At the time Geoff said he talked to his dead father, the general consensus was that he was crazy, full of it, etc. When Jr. said that his dead father actually pulled him out of his burning race car, most of the voices were claiming it was cool and great and touching, etc.

Honestly, I was devastated that Dale was retiring in '17. Being we are the same age. Took my 10 year old daughter to Homestead to see Dale Jr's last cup race. Wish I was at his first, but we made his last. I loved the ride, bud. It was awesome. So impressed with your podcast and everything you've accomplished since retirement. Hope you feel blessed. my son bought his 1st car @15, we lived 5 miles south of Pocono, it was a 6 cyl 86 camaro w/ one owner, 78,000, We agreed to swap out the plugs since We assumed be the original, the car belonged to a flourist in town who delivered flowers in it and ran it a few times a year to Atlantic City, my sonTodd had a tough life growing up w/ his Dad a long distance mover, Todd earned his money for his car by sacrifices for the moving business which then presented more social and school difficulties, anyways He was doing his 1st tuneup to a car trying be gentle with a seized plug, low and behold it snapped clean off in the block, I was a believer from another time his sister was born, so I pleaded and prayed hard immediately with our beholder we had no xtra money to send the car to a mechanic, so I took the broken end of the plug and put the cap back on and placed it back on top of the seized broken bottom half for some crazy reason told Todd to get in and turn the engine over thinking possibly driving to a shop for repair but when the sound from the engine was a unearthly growl for about 2-3 seconds, I told Todd turn off the key , now when I looked on the ground under the engine there was the bottom broken end of the plug on the ground - no hole in the block or the pan just the bottom half of the plug on the ground, we threaded up the new plug engine ran perfectly no stripping,no hole in the block , all the other 5 plugs came out and went in normally car ran perfectly. God is amazing,

my Dad was involved with racing in new england when i was growing up....stafford thompson riverside etc....geoff was always a nice guy and would talk to most anyone.....hard the believe he ran third in the daytona 500 a few years after this wreck for james finch in the 09 car...those types of old school guys is what nascar needs more than anything now.....he wasnt a spoiled rich kod like every young driver now who brings the sponsor money with them....they built owned and raced the cars to the top....

innovator, determinator, I always believed Geoff to be a fair and formative competitor with some of the greatest natural skills behind the steering wheel. A World Record Holder Stockcar and Modified Olympic Racer... he and his family of grandfather, father, brothers etc.. have contributed so much of their lives to the sport of racing, almost having paid the ultimate price on a number of occasions. nice to catch up with ole Geoffrey as Evernham would call him. spread the word this book is something worth sharing..

Very interesting look at Geoffs inner sanctum. Would like to get my hands on his book. I watched him race modified many times in upstate New York. On my first visit to my home track Spencer Speedway in spring of 1971 after discharge from the Navy he was driving a Valiant bodied modified of his own construction and later a Vega body. Always a fan of his and appreciate his honesty and openness on a not often talked about subject. Great interview as always by Junior.

I’ve always heard that that Valiant was way ahead of it’s time! In some pictures I’ve seen, it looks like it had independent rear suspension, but I can’t be certain. And that was at a point in time that a lot of guys were still running straight axle front ends! Name somebody today that’s a racer, and builds their own piece! NADA! God has blessed him richly!

@Tom T I have often thought that about the rear end also. It did look different. I saw that Valiant race on dirt at Syracuse and the 3/4 mile track at Pocono and it was impressive. I believe Geoff had some college engineering but don't know to what extent. He certainly must have applied it along with the racing experience to the bobsled program.

I was sitting 15 rows up where this happened and it was horrible. I told my then girlfriend there was no way he was alive when I seen him laying half out the truck. There were parts 10 rows up. The alternator hit a guy and cut him pretty bad. I've never seen anything like that and the sound was just horrifying.
