The Equality Act 2010 provides disabled people with protection against discrimination within the workplace. As employers, you must make reasonable adjustments to accommodate workers with a disability and ensure you have policies in place to prevent disability discrimination.
But how do you spot a disability and what do you do if you spot one?
In this on demand webinar, Marie Walsh of Consillia Legal covers:
The legal definition of disability discrimination
The responsibility of the employer
Reasonable adjustments
Examples of Case Law
This webinar will appeal to all those who are responsible for, or hire staff, within their organisation. It covers recent case law and it is a great opportunity to refresh your knowledge and ensure you are operating within the law.

Such a useful video! Marie sounds very down to earth - not the usual stuffy know-it-all type ........ don't sue me!! I realise now (too late) that my situation of being asked to leave included a combination of 'direct', 'harassment' and 'victimisation' forms of discrimination.

I'm being discriminated based on my ptsd. I'm was a civilian contractor who provided services to the armed forces in Iraq. Unfortunately for me I saw what the war had to offer carnage. At my work I requested accomodations. They denied. I'm treated like a lunatic only because I suffer from ptsd. I don't feel comfortable at my work. I'm ridiculed and being made fun of at work from management, medical staff and co worker's. What can I do?

Magic Don’t give up document everything even if its a small event or thought of something you think that could be unfair. Did you request an accommodation through HR ? Get your doctor to write you a reasonable accommodation request letter, it’s illegal for your employers to ignore your request and if denied. should provide you with a reason. Another thing can you do the job with or without a reasonable accommodation, you must be able to do that. I wish you the best.... I experienced unfavorable treatment due to my disability.

This is what I call "disabilitism." I have a receptive processing disorder. When I want to do a certain task, I'm told "Don't worry about it. I'll get someone who can do it." I thought I'd take a docent course and I was told "You don't need it." One project I was trying to work on others stepped in and did it instead. This goes on all the time.

JoAndra Van Dowall l hope your situation had changed for the better. This is too legal & a more useful way for an employer/employee to understand the EA 2010 is by link l have provided. I have watched many of these and this BBC link is the best I've found so far. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnunlHqnZ6eqjcU Also l suggest the following by Dr Phil Friend by the BBC. - Type into KZbin "Disability Smart Managers: The history of disability & workplace ability" (part 1) Don't be put off by the title, it's better then it sounds. Good luck

I tried (and failed - as always!) to understand and I'm just not getting it. He was too fast, just like this video, here. All I got out of it, he said what "disabled" means. But I didn't understand it. It means we are "unable to get anyone to help us to understand." I'm at a total loss. I cannot learn any of the things I've always wanted to. My conclusion on that: oh, well. Too bad!

Can I ask you a couple of questions I have been discriminated for disability and been accused of not having a disability. As soon as I told the md he started making my life difficult. The inappropriate meeting I was pulled into that prompted the grievance they are denying it ever happened.... they are really unethical. I challenged his request for me to put through his personal tax through the business. Can I ask if they have used their external hr consultants. He shouldn’t have made the decision for the grievance and subsequent dismissal it should have been the decision of the consultant who investigated it? I’ve put a SAR for the communication between the md and hr company, he’s refusing I know he’s got a lot to hide. Can I ask the tribunal to order him to produce the communication because they are being really shady. I’ve got a spinal injury that I had a surgery for that was supposed to heal but my disc subsequently collapsed causing me to yell out in pain. I’ve got no lawyer but I’ve been through hell. Treated unethically because I wouldn’t break the law. I’ve subsequently got more disabilities from the chronic stress. Should I call their employees so they have to lie in front of the judge?

To whom do I have to request for medical definition for disability? Is Autism Spectrum Disorder a disability condition?

Linda Evans You do not need it. If you read the comment that l left on the first of these posts that information will help. If you want to know whether you come under the act or not (you probably do) then call the Equality & human rights commission and they will assess you over the phone. Remember the type of disability that you have is not the issue it's how it affects your ability to do everyday tasks (without medication, coping strategies, equipment, help etc) and will it or has it lasted for 12 months or longer.
