An unfortunate flaw with the Elizabeth line is that platform level boarding is only available in the "Core" underground section which was achieved by using a different platform height. This means wheelchair users have to make use of a ramp for the vast majority of the stations on the line and this is an infrastructure flaw that is now baked in to the system for decades to come 😮💨
@A-Trainspotter-From-Berkshire5 ай бұрын
Elizabeth Line has level boarding at Heathrow as well.

Yeah really annoying I just found this out! I have heard that the staff are pretty good although I haven’t done it so can’t say for sure!!
@johnm82245 ай бұрын
It is true that level-access from street to train is not available on all platforms of the Elizabeth Line, specifically many of those that are "legacy" platforms on the existing / wider rail network, which they were not able to address at the time, for a variety of (mostly valid) reasons, but I believe there are plans to address this at some point in the not to distant future. For up-to-date info, and journey planning, I advise you check the TfL route maps, which clearly identify "Step free to Platform" and "Step free to Train" for all Tube, Overground and ELizabeth Line routes.

It gets worse as greater anglia/TFW have bought new trains from stadler which have the doors at the old platform height (low) and are thus incompatible for level boarding with both the core section of crossrail and the heathrow link (even though it is quite unlikely). The most annoying thing however is that both rail franchises have also bought other rolling stock from other manufacturers (alstom and CAF) which have the old (high) door height so their infrastructure can never be at the same height as all of the trains. Very short sighted of both companies and an issue which I don't think has been reported on enough
@A-Trainspotter-From-Berkshire5 ай бұрын
@@The_Georgi0 Greater Anglia and TfW level boarding rolling stock doesn't follow the national standards of 1,115mm platform and train floor height. The Stadler units aren't even level boarding on the majority of their network. So the future plan is to force all trains to use the standard of 1,115mm which should help solve this issue.

Oh my god, never try to go to the Paris metro... Although it's a bit more recent than London's underground, basically only line 14 (the automated one) is entirely wheelchair accessible, and wayfinding in stations with a lot of lines coming through is horrible even for non-disabled people

Elizabeth Line is nice and fast with a top speed of 90mph, which is reached on the Great Western Mainline, which opened in 1838. Elizabeth Line uses the Great Western Mainline Relief lines. The Metropolitan line has a top speed of 62mph. The Elizabeth only has level boarding at stations owned by Rail for London and Heathrow Airpoet Holdings, the rest of the stations are owned by Network Rail however there is a plan to raise the platform's to the stabdard of 1,115mm for level boarding with the Elizabeth Line and Great Western Railways services. Kings Cross St Pancras station on the Metropolitan dates from a 2007 rebuild.

I do think that all new (and maybe renovated?) infrastructure has to be accessible which is why they made every single Crossrail station (including outside the new stations) step free, at least from street to platform. TfL are slowly increasing the number of step free stations. The trains also have doors a different colour to the rest (in other words, the doors have to use a contrasting colour. Idk how to explain it well so hope you understand) which benefits me.

I have a friend who is a wheelchair user . A few years ago She asked If I could go with her to a place near Hounslow east because i remember correctly there used to be a specialist wheelchair supplier near there . Finding an accessible Route to get from Edgware on the northern line to Hounslow East on the Piccadilly line was a hell of a job. there were a few platforms with humps to make the wheelchair level with the train but not all Stations had them then. At least being a bit of a big lump I could lift her chair and of course her from the train
@mudchute4dlr5 ай бұрын
great video, but id argue it would make sense for a complicated lift map for a major interchange, 6 tube lines (subsurface counts as 3) (highest number of tube lines in any actual tube station (only 11 lines are tube, not the cable car or IKEA)), mixed with 2 london terminals, has trains all across london as well as services as far as edinburgh and even paris, for a total of 16 lines (thameslink ciunted twice). my point is that kings cross st pancras is a massive station, being the single largest interchange on the underground, and there will be a decent amount of people with luggage that just came from edinburgh or paris or something that will need lifts, and the only short routes (which do exist still but poorly signed for a reason), are not capable of handling modern day passanger numbers. a wise man once said, 'the needs of many outweigh the needs of few'
@chronically.artist87335 ай бұрын
One main flaw of the Elizabeth line is that although it was delayed, it was still rushed! This means trains are often delayed or cancelled and the Elizabeth line only stations outside of London often have malfunctioning lifts
@jos46695 ай бұрын
the delays and cancellations are more issues with the existing national network (especially the western section between paddington and reading) as opposed to the liz being “rushed”.
@mudchute4dlr5 ай бұрын
look closely and youll notice a lot of tube trains are late, but its unclear. the thing with the elizabeth line is that its a complicated mix of both a metro-style service and a regular infrequent mainline train. also there would be extra delays on the elizabeth line compared to the tube due to the extra bits that ot shares with both greateranglia and GWR (we all know first group is bad at keeping trains on time which can affect the elizabeth line too)

Hi Eliza, this is very interesting (even if I'm not in the UK)! I have a desperate question: Could you do a video how to do wheelies with Alber Emotion? I saw, you are able to. I have Alber Emotion M25, too. I can do wheelies with my "normal" tyres, but not with the Emotion 🧐. This makes life so hard because I need the electric support. If I do a wheelie, my chair speeds fast forwards and I tip backwards (lucky anti-tippers 🙈). I seems to me you initiate the wheelie more shifting your wight backwards than via action on the pushrims?!? I watched your wheelies in this vid several times 😂. My Alber settings are good, that's not the point. Eventually you could explain or show, how you do the wheelie? Curbs with Alber are evil for me. Thanks 🥰
