i was probably 4 years old when i played phantasy star ii for the first time, so ii will always be the most nostalgic over the first one on sega mastersystem, but yeah that's absolutely true. phantasy star i is definitely way more immersive & impressive. that's wild

My god... you are the first person, like myself who can't physically see the difference in graphics between the last generation and this generation.... I mean - when I was a kid; even the launch games, there was a huuuggeee leap.

I'm kinda surprised you didn't go with Phantasy Star 3. The least PS2 maintained its connection with the original and sets up events for Phantasy Star 4; the best of the pre-Online titles. Phantasy Star 3; while it does allude to taking place long after PS2, doesn't do much to establish this game being part of the same timeline outside of that. The generational storyline was clearly too ambitious to really pull off correctly on the Sega Genesis. Not to mention that strange battle UI. Though something I'll give it over the previous title is that thankfully it's not constantly plagued by grid battle backgrounds.

I loved Wonderboy in Monsterworld on the Megadrive. Really enjoyed the follow up years later when it became available on other systems here, but genuinely feel its predecessor is a bigger and better game. Still can't beat the final boss, but I think it had better structure and story. Both excellent though - and a real shame that we never saw Sega further develop the series on Saturn, Dreamcast etc.

Great Video as always. I have to agree with you on Fatal Labyrinth it sucks. When it come to DD on the Master I love it, but I have never played DD2 on the Genesis/MegaDrive.

There are a couple other sequels that could've been mentioned; Vectorman 2 was still visually good, but not as well designed. Alex Kidd on Genesis killed the series for many years. Space Harrier 2 lacks the same magic as the original. We didn't get the real Strider 2 until 2000. ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron is too different. We wouldn't get a true sequel until many years later. Not sure if Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures counts since it's actually called Hello! Pac-Man in Japan. Still, this game hardly feels like Pac-Man. Even Pac-Man World 3 and both of the Ghostly Adventures do more in comparison to this title.

Right lets do this. Phantasy Star II I actually liked a lot and I don't mind them removing the dungeon crawler section of the original. I liked the graphics for PSII and I liked the music too. That being said I take your points on board about the grid in the battles being bland and scenary would have been better, it was also quite the grind thankfully there is an easy mode on the MD Mini II version which helps. Wonder boy is a hard game to keep track of with how they titled the sequels. Monster World IV also got a rerelease on the MD mini. Monster Lair I liked on Mega Drive it was basically a sequel to the arcade style of the original wonder boy and not the exploration style Wonder boy games. Fatal Labyrinth sucks so I'm not even gonna argue with you on that one. YSIII was a Genesis exclusive shame we never got it here in Europe but that being said it was a very good action RPG however I understand your gripe when they changed the gameplay style over. We never got YsII because of Nintendo's grip simple as that. Agreed the music is amazing on YSIII comes back every year as an earworm. Mike was spot on with Double Dragon, great game on Master System craps all over the NES game however every Double Dragon game on the Mega Drive is poor, there was a Double Dragon II but it was japan exclusive and even that sucked.

The only double dragon I like is DD2 on original gameboy, awesome music and not too difficult

Great vid Tom, unfortunately I’m not a RPG fan but totally get what you saying about wonderboy and double dragon. I too never liked the MS version and yep DD 3 is dogshite. As for wonderboy 4 on the megadrive thank god for the megadrive mini as that’s a cracking play. Anyway see you at the London gaming market on Sunday, cheers Jon 👍👍

Ha ha--I always got lost in the first PS game... I see what you mean about the sequel bringing copious amounts of the "meh" though. Heh, the days when the story was in the manuals, not the games. lol

As a fan of the Ys series part 3 wanderers of Ys is generally considerd the black sheep of the series. Not a bad game but it feels nothing like the other games in the series. Luckily it received a remake with Ys Oath of Felgana. They ramade the game with that chiby artstyle they used for Ys origin and I love that artstyle. I'm still annyoed that there is no official way to play Ys 5. Both the Super Famicom and PS2 Remake never left japan. I recently found out that the entire series is available on switch but only in japan.... We don't even have a releasedate for Ys 10 that dropped in japan this year.

Yeah, the ys games are very mixed for me, I played 8 all the way to the final area but got bored as hell, so I gave up, yet the first one on SMS and origins are insanely fun to me

YS3 in general doesn't really feel like a proper follow-up to the first two games. Unless you're referring to The Oath in Felghana; which feels like a proper follow-up to the PSP remake of the first two. The Chronicles remake and Turbografix-16 are the best versions of the first two. With Double Dragon 3; honestly the only tolerable version is the NES. However, it's quite different from the others. Not to mention it's the version infamous for the Bimmy typo. Heck, Double Dragon Neon pokes fun at the misnaming. As for the first installment, the best way to play that is on the GBA; with improved sprite work and fine-tuned frame rate.

We got double dragon 2 in japan.... and before double dragon one by accolade. It's an awful conversion. However with double dragon 3, its a turd altogether but get this - its better graphics than the arcade! The arcade is super choppy.
