I haven’t heard this song in such a long time and by the end of it I felt extremely emotional. It reminds me of my dad who was abused as a child. He wanted something good for himself when he was older, but broke his back working. Things quickly went downhill with a pain pill addiction, alcoholism, and becoming a wife beater. He died just over a month ago from a severe heart attack. We hadn’t had a good relationship since I was little (I’m 18 now). Growing up I could see pieces of his true personality shine through....At his memorial I heard his old high school best friends (my godfathers), old work buddies, and cousins tell stories of before he became an alcoholic and it really made me understand why people always said I was just like him. It just really makes me wish I would have gotten to know who he would have been if he hadn’t have chosen to be who he was instead. I hope anyone who reads this comment has a good day. Things get rough sometimes, but it’s all gonna be okay in the end. I believe anyone can make it

Remember that he didn't destroy himself to get away from you, but the internal pain that he carried with him. It overtook the man he was and changed him. It was not your fault, but you probably forced him to stay longer. I am in the same boat as him and I have a 16 year old daughter. She keeps me here, whether I want to or not. I'm trying to stay strong and I imagine he did too. Hugs for you I know that you will be with him again.

This is when music truly meant something. Pouring your heart out onto a piece of paper that can be felt by the listeners. That certain tone of voice, when you hear it, you know they truly mean every word coming out of their mouth. Music that's so real it'd give you the chills. It's a shame these days are gone forever. To my adored son; Losing you took the roar out of my lion heart, the sun out of my sky...I am not capable of understanding why you were taken away so young, I cannot express to the universe enough how meaningful, amazing and good you were, now everyday is cruel...it’s brutal, your absence is like an elephant on my chest...I miss you, Oh god, I miss you so much! I have accepted life gets no better than the 20 amazing years, I was blessed with you. I promise to honor your life and one day sweet boy, I will hold you again...I know you are with me because I wouldn’t still be here if you weren’t. Lifetimes of Love...Mom💔 •Kyle David StrIckland• 6/17/97~1/21/18 ...it’s so hard to not take my life to be with you, son...bitterness is someone who’s left alone💔my heart, my spirit-Broken! I have to stay, I have to keep moving, I know you want me too, I know you miss me as I miss you. Life is so fucking cruel. Love is more powerful than Death, I know this much...on the other side beautiful boy, one sweet day...

Tho I know is not the same, I can feel almost the same as you feel, she left us alone my sons and I that same date but for this year, the girl of my dreams, the mother of my children and my partner in crime been 3 months now and still like it was yesterday. It's hard to live knowing someone so loved won't be with you again. At least she left me two of the better gifts I had, my boys. Hope we can find us again in eternity. Loved you always and still. *Yensy Cortes Duran* -7/4/85~1/21/20- As for you, Jenè, I hope you can find peace and please don't take your life, it sounds like the better way to go with our beloved ones but perhaps that would send us to a chasm or limbo where we can never got out. Don't take me wrong, the idea has gone through my mind often, even I don¿t know what do I do if I lose my boys, but I know that I have to take care of them now and I need to meet my (our) grandchildren to tell her about them. We must let our dead go but never forget all the gifts they made to us when alive and wait for our time to be with them. A BIG hug!

For me this song is about severe child abuse: Disarm you with a smile - an abused child needing to constantly feign happiness in order to cheer up his dangerous parents Cut me like you want me to - an abused child must lie to himself in order to be complicit in his parents lie The years burn - the deep pain in the soul of an unloved child Cut that little child inside of me and such a part of you - abused children grow to become abusive parents I used to be a little boy so old in my shoes - children who are abused have no choice but to developmentally skip childhood completely and become adults immediately What I choose is my voice what's a boy supposed to do - an abused child has an uphill battle to climb in order to claim his true and once lost identity The killer in me is the killer in you - an abused child's self destructiveness and self hatred is rooted in his parents self destructiveness and self hatred Leave you like they left me here to wither in denial - an abused child learns to abandon his true self in the same way his own family abandoned him. He needs to be in denial in order to survive, to maintain the lie that he is safe and loved. He dies inside and withers like a rose that never feels sunlight. My deepest love goes out to all those in the world who suffered abuse as children. There are good people out there, you just need to look.

A good song is one that creates empathy across every variant of human. This one does that.
@mikelawson51035 жыл бұрын
Song's not about wanting to kill his parents or about child abuse. It's about wanting to kill himself. After agonizing over it, he realized he couldn't do. At that point he was "disarmed," and that's when he told himself, Ok, if I am going to live my life, then I am going to do it by being my true self: "What I choose is my voice." It's a sad, painful song but ultimately it's an affirmation of life.
@LouisWritingSomethingCrazy4 жыл бұрын
What he said in interviews with MTV at the time is that it was about his abusive childhood and deciding to let that pain go essentially. The song "Today" is about suicide and the moment he decides to live on instead of killing himself. It's why "its the greatest day I've ever known"

My favorite by them. It really speaks to me on a psychological and physical level. I've always felt this song, from the second I heard it all those years ago and it's like it hasn't left my side. Makes me mourn my childhood (or lack thereof) but also makes me look forward and "disarm" it so it isn't held over my head for the rest of my life like I used to think it would be. It's beautiful and I'm so thankful for it.

@@chrispafrieddreamaster4085 It's okay, though. As long is it's figured out, who cares how long it takes? Some never do. Some live in it every day for the rest of their lives. We're still the lucky ones. And healing is a long process. The wound is gone but the scar will always be fresh...but it should be seen as the blessing of strength, not the burden of pain. Shout-out to all of our battle wounds- they tell the best stories Aesop's fables ain't got nothin on these 😆

@@amriktheshev Sure thing, I was just sitting here thinking how my life story and Spiritual journey is unexplainable. By experiencing covert narcissistic abuse again, made me dig down deep to find out the reason I was tolerating it, I learned who I really am, cuz it ain't that, the cycle stops here! Stronger now..I like quotes, movies, songs, I was reading " Broken" - Lifehouse lyrics, such healing words, he's been through a lot too. But the quote that comes to mind is; " It is far better to persue a goal that has an uncertain outcome than to face the fear that arises from living a life without purpose." Life is full of struggle, for some more than others, but its still worth it! Battle on.. Blessings..🙏

I had been home from the army about 15 years or more. I remember this song from the mid to late 90's. I kept a lot of shit bottled up inside of me that i never talked about. Then one day at work I heard this song on the radio, and I broke down crying. Yes, the killer in me is the killer in you. I didn't talk about what wrong with me that day to anyone, but I was finally able to let go of a lot of negative shit that was wrong with me. Now when I'm silent all is still. This was all before 9/11, I pray that those men and women learn to be still when silent. Time can heal, some times with the help of a song.

Through all the pain, stress, and hardship, I look for others to get it. I look for honor from those i honor. I love as i want to be loved, knowing I sometimes fail in loving. I look for people to understand but first I look for change in MYSELF. It's like the levels of caring with certain things just stop, it's so overlooked this genuine love that I need. May the Lord rebuke the people who trample on about their ways, as real love is being stepped on, talked over, Ignored for lack of concern, disrespected, left hanging, and so much more. May He humble the things we choose to love over the source of love at work in which we take and never give back. The love where we extend our arms to other's and it's seen as owed and dishonored. May the Lord rebuke the things we say and do over His love in us desperately trying to function loving other's. The love that is giving out from, pain, integrity, sincerity, honor, the love that we all need but don't often feel we can find truly. May the Lord rebuke the ones who take it for granted, who call it what they want when they know what it is and still ignore the attention and acknowledgement needed. The love people want selfishly but don't respond to outside of their own agenda. In Jesus name...... Dont take for granted Love that is being handed from the heart to you.

I think the line, "The killer in me is the killer in you" relates to a desire of Corgan at one point to kill his parents. He said in an interview once, "I never had the guts to kill my parents so I wrote a song about it." So I think the line relates to his parents being at fault for wanting to kill them because while they figuratively killed him, he was going to kill them. Also, he was spawned from them, so he shares their blood.
@Yaowza122710 жыл бұрын
Think it's more along the lines of child abuse.. A parent (killer) abuses their child (killer in him) physically or sexually and the likelihood of that child one day growing up and doing that to their children is high. Which incites a vicious cycle. Or maybe that's how I interpreted it.

I remember as a child (back in 1997 but I always preferred listening to the older stuff my mom liked as a teen) I didn't know what this song even meant, but this album, and this song in particular, I would always request to be played as my lullabies. I somewhat rediscovered this song, still always listening to the band I just sort of forgot about it. I'm 22 now, and realized that this song was sort of a letter to my future self. I didn't go through what he did to write this song, but in my own way, every line describes me perfectly in so many ways. It helped me find myself, and helped me through a lot of hard times I know everyone says they relate to the song and it helped them in so many ways, but truly this is my favorite song, and even my theme song.

I went to one of their Shiny and Oh So Bright shows and this was the first song Corgan played. They had some amazing visuals being projected on the wall behind him. It was so surreal. I definitely recommend seeing them for those who have not.

This song is so sad, and it makes me think of how my ex left me when I needed him most, not even thinking twice about it.

QTee I agree man but everyone takes it differently, even tho that’s what this song is about, I see it differently then y’all do. To me it’s about looking back at myself as a kid and how peaceful everything was, now as an adult I’ve been thru hell and back. Everyone interprets it differently. But just my opinion! Peace and love yall✌🏻 see you in another life brotha

I loved this song when it came out and I was a junior in high school. I had my own "meaning" to it. Not about my abuse, but about social life, friends, and those I lost

Listening here in 2023. One of the saddest songs I've ever heard. To all the adults of child abuse, get help, somehow some way. It was never your fault. Hold on to hope. There is a light at the end of that tunnel.

That's one thing I've always liked about Billy Corgan -- his lyrics are an obsequious look into aspects of the human heart that we can all relate to.
