Of course it can. But you can turbo that engine and still get enough performance increase that'll scare you for 1/3 of the price a heavy V-8 conversion would add. And you could keep your tranny instead of having to replace that too.

$2500? With a bad engine? Boy did you overpay for a straight body. I bought my Miata for $2400 with 189,000 mi. and immediately converted it to a race car with one minor problem to fix. Had a stuck brake caliper on right rear so I just robbed one from a 91 Escort(fits as it's the exact same part). That was 11 years ago and haven't had one reason to repair anything major on the car. These things are bullet proof until you go putting different engines in them. Besides for 1/4 of that 20,000 you can turbo/supercharge the 1.6L engines to the tune of 250 rwhp that in a 2000lb. car is a great handling rocketship.

This episode aired on TV over 10 years ago. Source your parts right and you can have a 4-500 Hp Miata for around $10,000, if you watch the whole series about half of his budget is body and paint. And adding a V8 doesn't throw off the balance or handling, if you use an aluminum LS you can actually take a little weight off the front.
