That was some REALLY nice ship-handling from both of them! I could see that poor engine popping away on only a few cylinders, but an engine is cheaper than a boat and it's already gotta be rebuilt. Good job on the camera too. Cheers from the "Graveyard of the Pacific", the mighty Columbia River Bar.

Yeah, they both did an awesome job handling the boats! That engine was definitely struggling, but like you said, an engine’s cheaper than losing the whole boat. Appreciate the kind words on the footage! Not bad for a novice cameraman who just points and hopes for the best! 😆 Cheers

Thanks for another great video. I've been watching Westcoast Rippers for well over a year or so. Great stuff! My wife and I flew into Christchurch (from Sydney Australia) on Wednesday and then got the train to Greymouth on Thursday. We picked up a hire car on Friday to head south but before we left I said we must have a look at the breakwater. She was under impressed, it was pretty quite when we were there. I just showed her your video and she was really impressed! Best regards Rick

When the tow line snapped, he managed to start up the motor. It was very unhealthy-maybe only running on a few cylinders, possibly with the turbos stuffed. He was lucky to get it going, just enough momentum to keep him out of danger.

This kinda reminds me of the Pacific Northwestern United States in how the wave/winds couple together w/ tides to pummel any ship that's not able to move thru her grasp? I watch a Captain who does nothing except rescue stranded/grounded and other watercraft that is in trouble. He speaks about the amount of tow rope / cable that needs to be out based upon the size of the vessel being towed. He talks as if it's a written rule that's got its own chart to go by but IDKnow much about it except I thought their 1st run was too short? Now I gotta see the drama play out... thanks for the video, peace
@westcoastrippers9862Ай бұрын

@westcoastrippers9862Ай бұрын
@ Yeah, they made it in safely! I’ll be uploading that video soon-stay tuned. You're right, nothing about the water is easy. New Zealand is a special place, but the West Coast is something else-raw, rugged, and real. We’re far from everything, but that’s what makes it great. Within two hours, we could be skiing, or right in our backyard, we could be surfing, riding motorbikes, or tramping through some of the most stunning countryside. Best part? The people here are as real as they come-hardworking, down-to-earth. And the rain? It keeps the crowds away, so we get this place mostly to ourselves. Cheers!

Those dreams almost happened w/ a sharp little lady from Brisbane but it didn't work out & then they took the rights away for the public to protect themself(weapons). I'll say no more about it & I really didn't know about the New Zealand area. I watch a missionary bush pilot now who takes on some serious mountainous regions & a lot of weather going on! I'm almost envious of the great variances of things to do in a short distance & now that you've put it that way I think I'd have like your Nation more than Australia unless that little lady had been part of the deal!? Doesn't it look like the damaged engine was placed in reverse in order to steady the ship? And it worked. Could they not have used that motor to run it over the bar on the way in? Looking at the towing vessel it pretty much look as if it was barely under power?
@westcoastrippers986211 күн бұрын
Yeah the engine was pretty sick - guessing he didn’t want to run it. Tow boat was just taking its time. Captain said he’d drop into neutral now and then to ease the tow line over the waves. The towed boat sank into a small set in Cook C and caught a wave at the same time, which slung it forward.

Greenhorn question, I know, but is the Cook boat running that slow through the bar on purpose?
@westcoastrippers986224 күн бұрын
Not a skipper myself, but from what I understand, the Jay Elaine (Gross Weight: 100 Ton) is being towed across the bar, so they have to take their time to manage the swells properly. They’ll ease off when needed and pull ahead as a wave builds behind them, keeping control rather than rushing through. There are also spotters calling the skipper to help them time it right and guide them through safely. They can’t just power through at full throttle either, as that could overload the tow line. As we saw in the first video when the tow line broke, there was a double-up of waves, and the Cook Canyon caught a wave in the chair lane, then slumped back off a wave.

Question Is that the optimum length of cable for this swell? . do you know the only reason it's just a car length on land is they were getting traffic crashing in ... that aint happening out there so why not put 20 boat lengths To me and I haven't done it, I'd want 6 waves between the towed boat and the tow and I'd want a big heavy length of Chain in the middle of 2 cables ... as my water spring with the water drag on 20 meters of chain between 2 breakable cables I know one end isn't going to kill The tow boat takes up the slack at a favorable wave set and lifts the chain off the bottom, from here on his job is to hammer the bloody thing The towed boat would be dragging a sea anchor and has 2 jobs, Follow that chain and Don't broach I'd be wanting to be well clear of the swell by the time the cable took up so don't broach
@lloydelliott7896Ай бұрын
Yeah every 7th wave is the norm, but when you get the tide running over a bar the waves either get out of rhythm or further apart. Very hard to read but hey, these guys aren't just fishermen, they are professional boatmen as well, gotta trust them, cheers.
@westcoastrippers9862Ай бұрын
That’s very interesting!👍
@adssco120Ай бұрын
The answer to that is simple. With a long tow line the vessel being towed will drift a long way off couse from the tow boat and there will no steer control. Greymouth horbour has a narrow harbour entrance so steering is critical to maintain course. Out in the open water a long towline would be used to absorb the tension between each vessel as they are moving violently.
