I’ve been playing this demo, quite a bit, and I really agree with you about it being simple and avoids decision paralysis. One thing I fear, though with the demo, is there’s only 20 of 100 something jokers so when the actual game comes out there might be way more complex jokers, not that that’s a bad thing. I’m kind of looking forward to it, but it might create some decision paralysis.

I mean that’s kind of what just happens to keep a player base happy. When Slay the spire dropped we had the ironclad and silent which are both very simple characters and then I stopped playing it a year after release and now it’s all watcher meta and my brain caves in every time I try to do a run but all my friends who never stopped playing love all the cool stuff. Complexity can be intimidating but it’s what keeps the active player base coming back

I'm oddly really looking forward to having more choice and being forced to make builds work that I would have never tried before

“Decision paralysis” is exactly why I enjoy these games. Having to dedicate genuine brainpower on decisions (rather than just clicking whatever sounds good) makes the eureka moment all the better. But yeah it definitely does ruin the game for people don’t want to min-max pixels on a screen unfortunately.

The thing that balatro does is have complexity to its gameplay without a high mental load, take slay the spire as a comparison, there a so many questions you need to be constantly asking yourself and overlooking or incorrectly answering one can lose the run, balatro asks one question, how do you take what your being offered and make it win, answering that is easier said than done however

@@Qyubij I did not, it is the rng with either a nothing happens or you get huge buff that feels bad to me. Most of the time you end up with nothing or you end up super strong. Having rng that gives varied results but always results, or that allows you to in some way influence or play around the potential outcomes makes for more engaging rng mechanics. Fx the spectral cards that destroy one card and gives 4 random enhanced. You never have a just "nope" outcome, you can have good and bad outcomes and can make informed decisions on whether it is worth it. I am looking for agency from the player in regards to the RNG. Let there be some strategy to the randomness.

I played one game of the demo and I was having fun, my very first game I had so many bonuses for Straights and I was doing like 7k/8k per straight. Then the last boss made it that I can only do pairs and there was literally no way with my deck, all made for doing big straights, to beat it. Which really sucked and that kinda disheartened me. Why am I punished for playing a certain type of deck? That kinda sucked to me and it was my very first game xD I love your videos about it though. Very fun to watch.

this phenomena is a common trend in deck builders. Some decks counter some enemies/bosses really well and some decks get countered hard by some enemies/bosses. If you’re familiar with Slay the Spire, each Act 3 boss counters a specific deck: Awakened One punishes power-heavy decks, Time Eater punishes draw/cycle, and DonuDeca counters slow scaling/lack of AoE. Some decks are just insane and blow past them regardless, but skilled players build their decks with these potential roadblocks in mind. Even if your deck fails, just restart and try a new one! Its definitely one of my favorite parts of the genre :)

@zyfygi1587 The last boss locks in a card at random, so unless it is in your straight it's RIP for you, pairs are way easier because you are usually tossing cards to redraw anyway. That said, winning a run on your first try usually sucks the fun out for me so that's a little funny.
