Perception is reality. I've heard Bret say he came to WCW with all kinds of motivation but given stories like this it was clear Bret was just collecting paychecks by this time. It's clear Bret didn't really want to be there, you could tell that watching from the TV, it was almost like watching a guy who was watching a clock.

@@nealbaker4170WCW was a complete mess booking wise when Bret showed up, Sting vs. Hogan at Starrcade proved that. Even though that's true, it doesn't matter. Bret still has to work and if he's going to phone it every time he's in a situation he doesn't like then you can't blame guys like Disco for not being fans of Bret either. No one wants to work with the guy who comes in late and says "can I go home now?". End of day, Bret was getting paid A LOT of money to be there, it shouldn't be too much to ask for him to suck it up and put his best foot forward while he's there.

Bischoff never signed Bret in 97 to be a main event draw in WCW. He only signed him to potentially put WWE out of business by weakening their roster, which of course had no effect due to the emergence of Stone Cold and Rock etc. Both Bret and Bischoff probably regret doing the WCW deal together.
@kevingriener7441
@kevingriener7441 6 ай бұрын
It didn't have no effect, it had the opposite effect, because in order for the Rock and Stone Cold to take over, Hart (and Michaels, but the Undertaker took care of that one) had to get out of the way. Bret Hart was a liability to whichever company he was in. There are literally receipts.

@Zeke1379 my ass "Bret made Austin". First of all, Bret won that match, so the idea that it was some kind of torch passing is asinine (Bret never did clean jobs, which is funny because he's been spending his twilight years crying that nobody did clean jobs for him). Secondly, and far more important - NOBODY WAS WATCHING THE WWF. WM13 has, by far, the lowest buy rate in Wrestlemania history. Because that's what happened to companies who put Bret Hart at the top of their card: all the revenue disappeared. As far as the general public was concerned, nobody knew who SCSA was before WM13, and nobody knew afterwards. And even among the WWF hardcores, that match that made Austin happened against Jake Roberts at KotR the year before - you know, the match he actually won. Because Jake Roberts would actually put over wrestlers clean to give them a boost. I understand why hardcore wrestling fans like Bret. He was a consistent, safe worker who took the in-ring product more seriously than anybody else except maybe HBK (who was also ratings poison). But the guy had too much ego and too little riz to connect with the greater public and be anything close to the superstar he was in his own mind (he wanted his WCW contact to be for $1 more than Hulk Hogan's! Like, dude, no!). He should have been one of the great IC champs in history. Instead, he spent the entire Monday Night War on whichever side was losing.

Bret hated being in WCW because he wanted to be the star in WWF/WWE still it seems and he considered WCW a demotion instead of an opportunity to keep working and making quite decent money. Bret chose to spin it negatively and he treated everyone there in that same cloud of disdain. He went to WCW to keep working and it feels like he was not willing to do the actions WCW wanted him to do and Bret just wanted to do whatever he felt like because ' He is Bret hart! He doesn't need to earn a spot or explain himself to these WCW nobodies.' That was how it looked to me watching from back then. Even looking at old footages, Bret clearly went there happy thinking one thing was gonna occur, and then after even a month, you saw he was not wanting to be there anymore. But.. what do i know, right? im just a youtube commenter. Its not like I was there and have that perspective. Just the perspective of the observer and only entitled to whatever details were permitted to the press and most of those were just drummed up stories anyways.

He wasn't happy because he told Vince 'They're not going to know what to do with me' and he was right. He wasn't used right at all there and it's because of the hogan crap. The same reason so many jumped to wwe was why Bret didn't want to go there. You can say his heart wasn't in it, which is fair at times. He's working for the b company and there was very much a pecking order, and if something started taking off, hogan would demand to be worked into it and bischoff would facilitate that because he's dumb. The more you watch wcw back, the more you see a few things here and there start clicking, and because bischoff thinks hogan is money, even though it was blatantly obvious the fans had lost interest in him, they'd find a way to wedge him to the front of the angle. Bret was right in his thoughts about wcw and to be honest, I don't blame him for phoning it in. In terms of big names, he was the best they had in their line up (pre benoit, booker, Eddie and so on getting elevated up the card, but it didn't happen for Eddie and Benoit until they jumped ship). Wcw had a great roster. The problem were the turds at the top thinking about themselves vs the company. I think Bret proved himself a guy willing to carry the company if necessary or asked to, but also, a guy willing to drop so the next guy gets his turn. Unfortunately, the wcw environment at that time, lacked that mentality in it's leadership. In my opinion at least.
@timomajere

@DystopianHog Yes. Bret did not earn anything in WCW and its the fans who dictated what back then. They liked Goldberg, so WCW shoved Goldberg in their faces. Fans liked NWO, so Everyone got to be in Nwo at one point. Bret.. Bret just shows up and its expected to change everything surrounding HIM? Absolutely not. What Bret did in WWF is nothing except to the WWF fans. He needs to literally pay his dues in WCW. No one gets free rides unless management decides its a free ride. Bret assumed an entitled mindset once he got there and felt WCW now had to change to fit HIS thinking processes. That is why Bret failed in WCW. He refused to do business and just wanted a free ride and a paycheck like Scott and kevin and Hogan were getting. He simply felt he was entitled to more when he never did anything to earn it in WCW. No one there gave two shits about what BRET thought he was entitled to. That is why he continues to piss and moan about Goldberg ' ending his career'. Because Bret needed to blame anything and anyone other than himself for all of his own problems and likes using Goldberg as an example because Goldberg DID screw up and Bret is simply trying to cash in on that every day, every microphone interview. Its all he talks about. The man can not stop living in his own past either.
@mattperkins261
@mattperkins261 11 ай бұрын
@@timomajere so you don't understand how business works. Bret, arguably the top guy in wwe. The wcw wanted him. He's entitled to demand a huge paycheck. And 'had to pay his dues in wcw'??? Hall and Nash didn't. They went there and were given everything from the off, and they weren't at Brets level. Bret also had dealings with selfish hogan in wwe too remember. So from his point of view, he's spent years building up wwe and himself to earn the top spot and now he knows he's going right back to the hogan show. Bret expected nothing more than he was entitled to. He has/had a reputation that everyone knew of. He's entitled to expect that reputation is respected and maintained as a bare minimum. We all know wcw would have been better off run by drunk monkeys. He expected professionalism and what did he get? Selfish pricks playing politics holding everyone better than them down whilst the 'top' of the card stayed the same. Hall and Nash politicked their way to being the highest paid guys on the books. Hogan made sure he could do whatever he wanted and nobody could do shit about it. Bret wanted to see everyone treated fairly, including himself, but again, he knows that's never going to happen with hogan basically running wcw via his bitch bischoff. And he's absolutely entitled to be pissed off at the incompetent twat oldturd who ended his career cos oldturd should never have been brought in to the industry.

it's ironic that people like CM Punk or FTR are so openly fans of Bret Hart and i think that's because they never had to work with him, it seems like most people who had to work with Bret don't have a whole lot of good stuff to say about him.

No, the negative comments just get more attention. Actually, the vast majority of people who worked with Bret liked and respected him. Just listen to Steve Austin, Rock, Undertaker, Mr Perfect, Mick Foley, Kane, Roddy Piper, DDP, Bam Bam Bigelow, Sean Waltman, and many more. Even Kevin Nash says he loved working with Bret apart from one incident. It's a shame people hear a few negative stories like this one and ignore the hundreds of positive ones.

@ajw5691
@ajw5691 11 ай бұрын
Because if you're not in the main event in WCW then that means you were automatically mistreated to some fans. Bret was a favorite of mine and I wanted WCW to be built around him as well. I wish he won the world title sooner and him against Hogan was a dream feud to me. However, that could have hauled the pushes of Sting, DDP and Goldberg. Also, Bret in WCW at least was featured as a top performer and was always near the top. There are examples when top talent went to other companies and became comedy acts or jobbers. Bret had it much better even though he wasn't pushed to the top immediately.

@@ajw5691 WCW was doing massive business in '97, while WWF was still struggling with Bret in the main event. It would make zero sense to take a guy who didn't draw as champion for your competitor and put him on top. Having great matches and being a marquee guy are not the same thing.

@@kazman_6899 DDP was set to be a mega star in '98, but after losing to Goldberg they dropped him down the card. Hell, Kevin Nash beat Goldberg to a huge pop and then they dropped him down too. Bret was largely wasted in WCW, I won't even dispute that, but he had to know going in that there was no room at the top for him, least of all when Hogan of all people was the #1 guy with creative control, brother. If you ever read Bret Hart's Bio from 07 you'd know that he's a pretty terrible human being. Some of the stuff he bragged about doing with woman while still being married I'd be ashamed to admit. He belongs in the same category as Vince when it comes to S!xuaL antics. Don't care what anyone else says, DIsco was a far more entertaining wrestler than bret ever couold hope to be. Disco was way more creative, and all his storylines and idea were made to put smiles on people's faces, unlike bret who had a lot of dark ones filled with drama and negativity.

How many times have we heard Bret was all business in WWF? Or that he took the business very seriously? Then he gets to the shit show that was WCW where he gets sandbagged by Hogan and Bischoff and eventually gets fed up and couldn't be bothered. WCW was no less unprofessional as Bret was at the time. I was watching WCW during the time Brett Hart join and Eric Bischoff basically was Hogan’s bitch. Everything was about the NWO and by 1998 the NWO storyline was starting to get stale and Brett Hart was fresh off the Montreal screw job and they could’ve done a lot of big things with him but they were too busy letting a washed up hogan. Take 20 minutes just to get to the ring and another 20 minutes to talk WCW was pretty much dead by the end of 1998 and to be honest WWF wasn’t that great in 1998 it’s just that WCW was making too many mistakes during that time I know because was watching wrestling a lot during that time
