NORMLfan13 ***SPOILERS*** So at the end of the movie we learn the real adelaide was taken to the tunnels while doppleaide took her spot on the surface. While she was that age there was a big hands across america campaign and she was even wearing the shirt which shows red figures holding hands in a cutout style used by kids with scissors. She was able to get control of everyone because she was from the surface and had communication and could show them how she was different. So she became their leader. Now being down there in crazy town at such a young age would def cause some mental issues. So basically I see her mental development pretty much halted at the age or slightly after she went down. She wanted to do the hands across america statement to show the world they exist and to reclaim their "souls"
