great video. I loved the subtle mention of the 'alternative' usage of "those apps" and "arr apps" 😜

Spreading the "RAID is not a backup" message has the potential to save a lot of people from losing their work, "collected materials" and private moments (photo collections). 👍

These are always a fun watch. I have two licenses of Unriad and moving to running them as a VM on Proxmox and then running LXC for dockers. Been fun even though my wife is quite frustrated with me.😂 I want to setup Ceph as well but we will see how that goes.

@ oh man, I don’t get much game time anymore. I get it sometimes when the kids go to bed but not near as much as I used to. Helldivers 2 is a lot of fun. I also have been enjoying the few games I’ve played of Deadlock. But usually I play single player games because I can’t handle the “afk” problems of online games with young kids.

Enjoying your channel! As a longtime snowboarder and recently getting into homelab your content is a cool mix. You mentioned an app/setup you use to access Navidrome outside your network. Could you share what you use?
@HillPhantom11 күн бұрын
Hey man thanks so much for commenting. I always worry no one gets my mixed interest so this means a lot to me. Thank you! I totally lunched on that I use tailscale. Super easy to set up and is super secure. I will probably do a video on it alone at some point. LMK if you have any trouble with it. Cheers!

@@HillPhantom Got it, thought it might be a configuration like that. Was curious if there was existing functionality that was plug and play (e.g. Plex) that allows access to a music library outside of your network. What mobile application have you enjoyed using the most for streaming? Looks like substreamer is a good option...
@HillPhantom11 күн бұрын
@@austinsomer1440 so Plex has built in remote access but you have to open a port. I personally don't like opening ports, so I don't use it. I prefer the VPN route as I find it safer than exposing my entire network. There are bunch of ways to do it, but tailscale to me is the easiest to use. For streaming I use both Symfonium and Substreamer apps. They are OK, get the job done but you are defiantly making concessions as opposed to something like Spotify app. I use Symfonium to stream music outside the home as its connect to tailscale then I use SubStreamer in home for music with directly connected to my LAN. I havent really messed with any other subsonic apps. My take, if you are massive audiophile, you are gonna hate these apps, but if you are a normal user it will likely work for you. For video, Plex is my baby, again kinda sucks if you go the VPN route you have to use the web Plex not the App but it works fine. Jellyfin is another options but, I just think Plex is a bit more evolved and there are advantages to their paid tier.

@@HillPhantom Yep - validating a bunch of my findings. Amazing what the community has created but the existing subsonic apps certainly leave some UI/UX to be desired. They work, and they're free for the most part, so can't really complain. Thanks for all of the feedback and keep the content coming!

CasaOS VS Umbrel ???? 🤔
@HillPhantom9 күн бұрын
Tough call. My reason for CasaOS was more applications and abilities that I needed to manage my RAID drives in Casa.

Saying raid isn't a backup but not giving a good example for various use cases ( 100gb vs 1tb vs 10tb vs 100tb) is a frustrating comment that many tech KZbinrs give. An answer would be great. Oh. Great video otherwise. Thank you.

@HillPhantom a bunch of tech people say raid isn't a backup but don't tell us what would be. This video included. I've learned a ton from people on KZbin but what I've done for backup i did on my own. I wonder what better ideas more experienced people like you might have.

@ckckck12 yup said shouldnt be your main method of back up then said im doing a video on my back up strategy soon so be sure to stay tuned. This wasnt a video on back up but as said will do one on that soon as it deserves its own dedicated video :)

RAID can save you if one of your drives fail. But imagine if your house burned down, or flooded, or the drive was stolen. RAID won't help much in any of these situations. A good backup will be geographically separated (or two if possible). But the feasibility of that depends a lot of how much data you have vs your bandwidth vs the amount of churn in that data. Ultimately, it comes down to how painful would it be to lose that data if you lost it?

Great video. Long time user of the *arr apps but your subtle explanation just made me click on what the "arr" actually meant! 🏴☠ 😂
