Hidden behind several mature trees and a long row of vertical wooden fencing, an unassuming concrete house nestles into its surroundings. Due to the street's topography, the house is not easily visible from street level, blending seamlessly with the environment. The difference in elevation between the highest and lowest points of the street is five meters, while the property's elevation varies by three meters. This alignment with the topography gives the house its "cascading" characteristic, where its physical arrangement enhances the living experience.
The house is designed as a second home for a young couple with two small children, providing a simple yet functional living space with four bedrooms, a living area, and service areas. Inspired by the site's topography, the design divides the site into three levels: the highest level houses the service areas and garage, the middle level contains the living area, and the lowest level accommodates the four bedrooms across two floors. These three sections cascade down the site, ensuring that the height of the bedroom section matches the service section. Two courtyards between the levels serve as transitional spaces with staircases, providing light and air to the adjacent areas, particularly the middle living area. Additionally, a reflecting pool adjacent to the living room cools the air, cascading into a waterfall at the lowest level, enhancing the house with the soothing sound of water.
The house predominantly uses two materials: site-cast concrete and wood. The contrast between the cold gray concrete and the warm wood creates a comfortable living environment. These materials flow seamlessly from outside to inside, creating an uninterrupted spatial experience and a cohesive architectural design. The 1.1m x 2.2m module of the site-cast concrete pattern influences the vertical arrangement of the house's sections. Balconies and terraces provide transitional spaces between the indoors and outdoors, offering open views toward a sunken garden.
The site’s characteristics drove the principal design idea, guiding the geometric arrangement of the house based on function from the initial design process. This approach not only results in architecture specific to the site but also creates a comfortable and functional home with rich spatial interconnectedness, varied light qualities, and shadows. The consistent use of materials throughout the house unifies the complex yet simple design, creating a harmonious living space.

What would the cost of a house like this be? Is it concrete because of the risk of earthquakes?

The cost of a house like this can vary depending on the location, size, and other specifications. If the house is made of concrete, it is likely because concrete is more resistant to earthquakes, providing better protection against damage.
