To get the most out of them: - Acoustic treatment (4 high quality 60x120cm rectangular bass traps can do a hell of a lot). - Take them off your desk and put them on stands (I downsized my desk for this) (Make sure the stands aren't hollow and resonant. Also, teeth on the bottom of the stands are good) - ISO Pucks under them for further separation (I'm still yet to compare to my decent foam pads to see if theres a huge difference though).

I had a music equipment repair shop and I was an authorized Yamaha servicer. In the thirty years of working on pro audio gear, the best monitor speakers I encountered were the HS8. I was also a Mackie servicer and their monitor speakers were pretty nice too. But as a jazz pianist, I found the HS8 to be incredibly accurate in reproducing VST pianos. The only drawback: once out of warranty they will be expensive to get repaired. If you blow the output ICs, they are hundreds of dollars. The drivers were rather pricey as well. Fortunately they are very reliable. I only worked on the HS8 two times.

HS8 user here since 2007 :) one finally went bang and had to replace, Everyone says these are the best you can get for the price and I thought that but decided to try the Adam audio T8v's ...... and I feel stupid for keeping the Hs8's for so long. The T8V's are much clearer, so much detail, separation. Bass is clearer, it's still balanced. I honestly can't recommend anyone buy the HS8's anymore. It's like someone's pulled cotton wool out of my ears and I can hear again. and they are a similar price!

Cool video. Are you planning on getting the HS8S subwoofer? I hear that pairing it with the HS7s/HS8s is a winning combo. I've had my HS8s for about 9+ years, and they still sound phenomenal. I'm currently considering purchasing the sub just to finish gathering all the infinity stones (audible frequencies), so to speak 😂. I just hope what the sub adds makes a justifiable world of difference to an already great pair of monitors.

Another Yam fam fan here ! Thanks for the video. Without being picky, just to add little more accuracy to the NS10 comparison with HS Series. Those two are basically very different in technical terms, NS10 (except bass ported version NS10MT X,) were fully sealed design, passive monitors, unlike active bi-amped HS series, with bass ports located at the back. If not mistaken they share similar paper domes, with typically "dry" sound signature - I would say the smaller the HS version - the closer to the NS10 sound, but still very different. HS series were full new design based on Yamaha's legendary speaker legacy, (and well marketed connection with NS10), rather than technical redesign to offer new "NS10" sounding monitors. Fully agree about HS8 being phenomenal speaker fot the price (and even twice above), having very nice response, detail and translation. Many people blame the room acoustic defficiencies to the speakers, commenting on them as boomy, or harsh - the fact is, that this 8" inch box needs bit more room space and acoustic treatment, proper speaker isolation and good positioning - including enough space behind the speaker. Once this is out of question, there is probably not many as good monitors as HS8 in the respective price range. Despite wide offer on the market, I preferred Yammies over JBL308, Kali Audio LP8, Adam T8V, and Presonus Eris 8, which for the price I do consider as a good sounding and proffessional product, with all their pros and cons. In my opinion, HS8 sound better in many "studio monitor" aspects in comparison to the mentioned. Enjoy these !!!

i did the hs5's before. in retrospect they did the job that would be expected from the NS10, the main issue is that they don't even hint at what's going on in the bass area. since they need a sub, may as well go hs8 if you're going down the low fi speaker route.

I have no clue why youtube recommended this to me :D, but hey. Maybe these speakers are the best for you, but they aren't the "best" monitors for sure. They are good at showing you problems in your mixes early on, because they are saturated at the mid frequencies. But they also can decieve you if you aren't aware that they are somewhat coloring the spectrum more, than other studio monitors. I think if you are looking for a new pair of monitor speakers, just try out as much as possible, if you can try them out where you will be mixing or mastering that's awesome. Don't listen to anybody, only yourself and your ears. If you are on a tight budget, yes you can easily get great two way speakers, but mainly three way/or more speakers will give you hell of a lot bigger/wider stereo field and separation.

Unfortunatelly, I have to disagree. I bought a pair of HS8 around 3 years ago and every time I listened my mix in other systems, they sounded really different (even after I "calibrated" them with Sonarworks) and sounded like everything was "harsh" and upfront. Which tends to other problem I had: the sound stage never translated that well. The difference between loud and quiet, left and right, or as some of them say, the "3D Stereo Field" was kinda impossible to identify and position the elements in the music. My solution was to buy another pair of monitors (in my case, I got the Kali LP6) and use the HS8 only as a Subwoofer (I made a crazy routing in my interface to make this work). By the way, If there's one thing I LOVED about the HS8 are the bass and the sub. They were really good for me in these low frequencies. To wrap it up, it all depends on your preferences. The kind of sound you like to hear while produce/mix and what you NEED to hear in order to achieve your results.

That’s awesome. My only experience with ns10s are from what dad was working on when I was growing up. Just can’t get the picture of them out of my head. I’ll definitely check out the kh80!

HS8 have almost no low end, impossible to hear, not much for detail compared to higher end speakers, these are entry level speakers

Well you could argue that the Sony MDR 7506 are entry level as well. But guess what? Both these monitors and those Sony headphones are used everywhere

Not sure if perfect accuracy is what you are looking for in the studio. Most equipment does smear, cross modulate, ring and ... well, generally hide the subtle details; details you might want to be at least notably present even on some sub $200 earbuds or a cheapish BT speaker. On the other hand, producing for clubs it makes accuracy total sense.

I listen to my mixes through 3 different sources after I get my first mix on my Yamahas. I always listen on AirPods, a jbl BT speaker, and also my phone audio! Phone audio may be the most important. I actually created a eq curve that I apply to my Yamahas when I and creating shorts specifically!

It’s funny when KZbinrs play music through speakers to imply we can tell whether the speakers are good or not. Btw these speakers are more than 8 years old.

The Best? No way! Ever heard from ATC, Neumann, Adam, Barefoot… HS series is one of the worst monitors, sorry. They sound like their is a towel in front of them. Even in the price range of the HS8 are way better monitors on the market.

Well, I guess go and tell that to many many many successul producers/engineers making great music & top notch sound on Yammies HS8. So if you know something those guys do not, it would be nice to share it with the world, or kindly move on. Saying HS8 sucks, without any reasoning, most probably without any experience with these, or providing any alternative to the monitor, where your real life experience actually brings any kind of insight, or anything useful in that regard - in sum gives your opinion zero validity. Now would that accidentally correlate with your experience and credits in general, not a surprise !

Yamaha has not been "the pinnacle of sound-reproducing studio monitors." They made a shitty-sounding home stereo speaker that, by accident, and due to its imperfections, just happened to be good as a mixing reference.
