It won’t be easy to find a place more picturesque than Kirtipur, one of the oldest settlements founded by the Newars.
My visit to Kirtipur is forever etched in my memory. Often overlooked and ignored by tourists, Kirtipur is undoubtedly one of the best places to experience the authentic Newari way of life.
Kirtipur (‘Kipoo’ in Nepali) is known as the city of glory (‘Kirti’ means ‘glory’ and ‘pur’ means ‘city’). For this new walk in the Kathmandu valley, I had the chance to immerse myself in the atmosphere of the glory city.
I walked through its narrow streets, observed its beautiful traditional houses, its Buddhist and Hindu temples. I could eat the succulent newari food with some Chyang aswell !
Major locations for visit -
1. Newa Lahana Newari Cultural Restaurant- Newari cuisine restaurant in Kirtipur. This restaurant serves around 50 different types of Newari food, choyalas, including baras and sukutis.
2. The Uma Maheshwar temple - The temple's name derives from the stone icon at its center, depicting Shiva and his wife Parvati in the Uma Maheshwar pose.
3. The Bagh Bhairab temple - It is the only temple in the Kathmandu valley dedicated to the "Tiger" form of Bhairav.
4. Mandap Nagar Kirti Bihar ji - If you want to discover peace and calmness, then Nagar Mandap Shri Kirti Bihar will be the perfect spot.
5. Suspension Bridge
