If you rerecord a song to use in your work it doesn't strictly need crediting as a sample. They may not have sampled the Eddie Johns record itself, merely recorded the elements they needed to get the sound they wanted. Happens a lot in hip hop.

I see it, I see it. But I think this was quite creative, how Daft Punk did this, and it was more-or-less flying under the radar, until MORE clever people caught onto this. Daft Punk did a great job on the song.

If you listen really close, you can hear the guitar in the background of both DP and this chop as well.

Pretty sure they sampled it into an Emu SP-1200 (really cool vintage sampler) which gives it that "sparkly" sound when you use it a certain way. Both the original and the Daft Punk songs are fantastic in my opinion. :)

OK... we did an Orgins video on this a year ago. The Sugar Hill Gang did NOT sample Good Times for Rappers Delight. They had the Sugar Hill Studio Band play Good Times note for note. Remember, We're talking about 1979 here. Samplers were a few years later and when they came around, they were only 8 Bit. Having said this, I'm thinking DP did something VERY similar to what SHG did.. replayed the bass line note for note from Good Times.
@briansredd16 жыл бұрын
I think the programs just count bass hits to calculate BPM. It's not a number listed in the tags. You can rip vinyl and still get a pretty accurate BPM reading in Mixmeister
@briansredd17 жыл бұрын
So, you'd like me to make a new video to bring the pitch down for you? The pitch and the key was a guess in mixmeister because the program does not automaticaly adjust key with pitch bends. I have, however burned this to a CD and actually done a phase with the DP song. Seems the overall song pitch bend is around 127 where the samples all by themselves is roughly 122-123 bpm

In the beginning this guy says that he listened to Discovered and he couldn't find the samples of Around The World and Da Funk. Many months ago I heard the song supposed to contain the Around the World sample, it's called 'Jerry Goldsmith The Rec Room' and it doesn't cointain any sample of Around the World!

Yeah I think there is probably more advanced software out there that allows A-B trims, slices, etc that would be best to create what we're attempting to create here.
@briansredd17 жыл бұрын
yeah I have. IT sounds like some kind of Chic produced track. Most of the stuff they used in Discovery was 70's/80's music so that would make sense. Can't sort that one out for anything. Thougth it was a sister sledge track but can't find one that sounds like that.
@briansredd17 жыл бұрын
Yeah I kinda figured that judging from the lack of info. I think the jury is still out on weather some of these are actually used or not.
@briansredd17 жыл бұрын
I think you are right about Da Funk. There was a remix somewhere that used Tata Vega. It sounds like the same synths were used in Rec Room & Around The World. I suppose they could have sampled a note and played it on a keyboard. Who knows. We just keep trying. I think Face to Face uses a sample in Evil Woman that's played as a chord (they use straight samples as well).

I think they use the next note in Evil Woman (after the samples I posted) but they play it as a chord on a keyboard. Maybe one of these days when I sort out Ableton & my M-Audio keyboard, we can test my theory on that.

The Tata Vega sample is used in the "10 Minutes of Funk" remix of Da Funk by Armand Van Helden. Daft Punk also used the sample in their live version of Da Funk in the Daft Punk Alive 1997 recording

They don't need to declare that they're using a sample or license it because it's less than 7 seconds. In fact, the samples they used are not only less than a second each, but they're AUTOTUNED to different pitches. So yes, Daft Punk samples from Eddie Johns. But they do more to change the sample than actually just using it to compose an entire track. In fact, it's more like playing the sample as a musician rather than using it as a backdrop for the rest of the composition.
@briansredd16 жыл бұрын
Check your booklet again. If yours says something mine dosen't, then tell me what sample they used for High Life

To release a song containing samples in the USA, an artist must pay some type of royalty for every track sampled. The only acceptions to this would be public domain music or if the artist already owns the publishing rights to the sampled material. Do they HAVE to credit? Apparently not. Do I care? No. I could care less about such things. The only thing I know for sure is that the sampled material shown in this video was not publicly credited anywhere by Daft Punk.
@briansredd16 жыл бұрын
That's very possible. I think most people are leaning twards Diana Ross, but we're not sure of the track yet
@briansredd16 жыл бұрын
You have to pay royalties, but I'm not sure that recognition is required. The thing about DP is that they are rather avante guard artists. My guess is that they didn't give "props" so that people like us could put the pieces together 7 or 8 years later AFTER the song was released. After all, the album IS called DISCOVERY

I heard somewhere that they used "it's my house" by "Donna Summer". I looked all over the internet for that tune, but I absolutely could not find it. I am looking for songs with similar names at this point. They could have just recorded their voice and made the pitch higher or maybe they had a girl sing those sounds with longer notes then took out peices for a "cut-off" effect. But I still think they sampled something.
@briansredd16 жыл бұрын
So you are saying this isn't the sample? I did a video that I posted as a response to this one where I take a loop from the source material (more spell on you) and actually catch a PHASE or JET off One More Time on deck 2. You can't phase anything that isn't identical

Daft Punk's "One more time" I knew was sampled when I first heard it and I had a huge argument with people at the time who told me that it was not sampled until years and years later when it was shown that they did it. I love Daft Punk but I think the reason why some people have an issue with them sampling is that they don't credit all their sources. Sampling is great and they do a great job at it but don't act like you originally created the beat when in fact you did not.
@briansredd17 жыл бұрын
We're VERY close on that one. Looks like I'm going to have to listen to "The Boss" album at 45 RPM... HA! I'm trying to find a song on that album that used light synth.

I'm not denying any of this, I'm just saying that it wouldn't be uncommon to hear those notes for a trumpet. I mean, you could take any song that has a trumpet playing that note one time and you could repeat it like that so it sounds like One More Time. Just my input on this.

actually, justice sampled Britney Spears feat Madonna - Me Against The Music for D.A.N.C.E., well, not really sampled as in used the same melody, check out the song and at almost 2:40 - 2:45 of the song when madonna sings "All my people in the crowd, let me see you dance C'mon Britney take it down, make the music dance All my people round and round, party all night long C'mon Britney lose control..." its the same melody as D.A.N.C.E., im pretty sure they know, since they remixed that track
