I grow in North Florida and have had the same issue with pickle worms. Last year wasn’t as bad as other years but I have learned to keep the BT or Neem oil close by once the plants start producing fruit. You got to stay ahead of the worms and spray weekly and after it rains because the rain will wash off the sprays. Remove any damaged fruit as early as possible and look for those worms and remove them manually if possible. It’s all part of gardening in the South!!! God bless.

@@jeanettejarvis9669 I have never used the net but find the key is to be in your garden everyday inspecting for issues so you can take care of problems before they get out of hand (easier said than done right?! 🤣). I have only used netting before once for brassicas in the fall/winter, they worked great against cabbage worms.

Last year some type of worm took out all my spaghetti squash. the ones that looked good when I let them cure and brought them in would start to rot at the end and solost them all. So sad lots of work and tease that they looked good at first. I understand about the pain. arthritis is through my whole body. I pray daily for Gods healings and healing for both you and Nancy. Sorry to hear about the losing battle against the famous warrior of the Pickle Worm. I used to have issues with the other well known garden worm "The tomato Horn Worm", but one year I grew my tomato plants near our backyard bird feeder, and I didn't see the first worm that year. I'm just curious if that might help in this situation. Might be worth trying. Also, my wife suggested planting marigolds or herbs such as Basil or oregano close by to help mask the scent of the spaghetti squash blooms.

Hi! Just to add another option for you. We love Zoodles - spiral cut zucchini. We use it as a spaghetti substitute with my sauce and also I have make "noodles" but cutting the zucchini into thin planks and making lasagna. A great substitute and friends of our that were skeptical now ask for these alternative meals. Have a super day. We are here with you on your new journey and I am certain will all learn along the way. Oh I just came across a tool that may make your trellising a little easier and not sure if you have ever used it. It is called a Tapener. I have seen it on Amazon and a variety of other garden supply sites. Just though that I would mention it to you seeing that you seem to trellis a lot of veggies and it could be a time saver.

Your pest problem might be reduced n with your longer growing time where you are you might get a harvest. If that doesn't work, mini hoop covered fine netting on a row to see if it helps with your bug problem. Good luck. Peace to you and yours

well!!! It happened here in Maine!! The Squash Vine Borer Moths teamed up with the local Pickle Worms & started a full-on asssault on my peacefull Squash Village. NOW they have air support AND boots on the ground, excuse me, appendages on the ground. I had to evacuate the locals and turn the patch into bioChar. THEN rake up and sift the dirt to look for the SVB pupae. Which, as it turns out, I've been seeing them in their pupea form all my life, I ALWAYS wondered what those things turn into. I suggest you google what the pupea stage looks like, because chances are you've seen them before

I’ve never heard of the dreaded dastardly pickle worm but I’m new to this gardening stuff. The one thing I try to do without fail is as soon as I put a plant in any soil, I water the new plant then I just wet the surface of the soil with Summit Mosquito Bits solution that I soak with about 3Tbs in 32oz jar with filtered water (not tap or anything with chloramines etc) for 1-4hrs then I shake and strain the bits out. Then add about 1/4c to each 1gal of filtered water in a shower head watering can. (I use a Boogie Blue Plus water filter for my plants) SMB is also a BT. Completely organic and safe for people, wildlife and fish. It kills gnats and mosquito larvae in case it’s in any soil or compost. I do that every 5-7 days for 2-3 weeks then every 2 weeks. Most time they’re gone by the second watering but want to ensure they’re gone. I’m wondering if you got them from your compost. Hey, have you thought of using predator mites? I’ve seen YT videos using a drone to spread them around or add pouches hanging on your plants. Just a thought. God Bless you both.

Those suckers are horrible here in Hawaii also. Way too much rain to use BT. It works but the tropical weather washes it all away. Gotta get lucky. Only thing that keeps them off are nets. Pain in the butt and alot of work but that’s the only way I can get a harvest.

There's only 1 sure way to beat those pesky moths. You need to build a screened trellis 4 feet wide and 5 to 6 feet tall. The window screening and or the "tool" they use for wedding veils are both very good at keeping them out while letting light and rain in. There are some pastas made out of spinach, tomato, and other vegetable powders. Those are what I like to use.

Good ole pickle worm is what it looks like. I’m surprised it was able to get through the squash skin. They will destroy your zucchini blossoms (which is what they prefer). They will eat the fruit if there are no blossoms. That was my first worm experience immediately after starting my garden in August.

I have used spaghetti squash, the noodlesike angle hair pasta in size & texture. I take a large zucchini & cut thin lengthwise. They make lasagna noodles! I also will take yellow crook or straight neck or smaller zucks & chunk them up & use in casseroles like u would use like elbow macaroni or other pasta. Then... away from main dish, larger zuck.cut rings & quarter them... the look like apple slices, use all ur apple spice pie and cinnamon & put in ur pastry... MOCK APPLE PIE. I made zucchini jelly & zucchini pickles. I love zucchini

Hollis...The cotton pickin worms...and squirrels! Yep, they get way more than we do. But, this year, I am not spraying and fighting! Yes, I did the insect netting and it did work. However it sure made it a pain to try and care for the plants. So, this year....tulle! I got a bolt of tulle and will be making a pile of squares to tie around each section of the fruit...Not the plant, just the fruit! it might seem like a pain, and probably will be. But, if we get fruit....IT's worth it. Oh, and I have a pile of old cotton t-shirts...I cut those in strips..the best ties..THE-BEST!

Hi Hollis and Nancy! Thank you for all you great videos. Your tips have been very helpful. By the way, if you need some low carb recipes, I would like to suggest a channel that I have been following for a bit. She shares low carb/keto recipes and has lost 135 lbs. Her channel's name is Low Carb Love. I hope this helps. God bless you!

I’m in coastal Alabama and have had problems with pickle worms. Now I plant as soon as possible and try to get ahead of the moth that lays their eggs. Good luck!

I love spaghetti squash, but I don’t eat with sauce. I eat mine with butter, brown sugar & cinnamon. That’s how I like butternut squash too. Prefer butternut squash pie over pumpkin actually. Especially honey butternut.

I would suggest keeping them covered the whole time to keep the moth from getting to it. That's what I do with my cabbage and cole crops. I don't like bugs. God bless you from Idaho!

How often does Nancy spray the baking soda water for mildew prevention? The pickle worm was what got some of my summer squash last year, they looked like that. This will be my first year planting winter squash. I’m in SC. Thanks!

We got that Honda cultivator a year or so ago after watching you use yours. This is a nice little machine, and one of the few pieces of garden machinery I can start and use on my own. Recommend!
