DISCOVERING | Diver Ducks and Buffalo Harvest

Episode 63 - "Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam. Where the deer and the diver ducks play" This week we go November diver duck hunting in perfect duck weather - late fall snowstorms. And I was asked if I wanted to harvest a buffalo at a Western U.P. game farm, so of course, I said, yes. Even though this ranch is close to my hometown and has been operating for almost 20 years, I'd never seen a buffalo before.

you got that right. basically it was like walking up to a cow and shooting it. i am not anti hunter. i'm 70 and hunted until i was 60 until i didn't want to kill anything anymore. but this was not hunting.

Hah! Thanks for your honesty. Kent is awesome! I would love to sit by the fire at his cabin there (also hit the cutting room floor) and watch buffalo and listen to stories! And it was a crazy feeling. By the third time we went out the nerves had finally calmed down too and I'm thankful for a good shot. Looking back at the footage when I had a shot the first time, it was too far, and that's why I was having a hard time getting in the scope and pinning the crosshairs behind its ear.

Duck hunting was awesome, but better editing could have made the bison hunt not look like you were hunting at a petting zoo. On a side note. I watched On the River last week and thought you did an awesome job on the documentary. Sort of a sad story and I felt sorry for those losing their leases to Uncle Sam. That Forest Service dude deserved all the expletives he got from me. He could have cares less for those hunting camps. Probably a card carrying PETA member. Love the show.

Thanks! Technically I was kind of "hunting" in a petting zoo! But I still wouldn't try petting them! LOL! I didn't want to make people think otherwise. That's why I tried to emphasize it was more of a harvest, than a hunt. My old hunting camp documentary will always be my favorite and one of the best things I've ever done. Thank you :) It's been 7 years now and we still miss them!
