@@miguelleite3510 I think that’s what a lot of people forget with John. Helen confirms earlier in the season that it wasn’t enough to pretend to be in the reich. They had to embrace nazism to stay safe. And after about 15 years of being a high ranking nazi general, it’s understandable that he became a nazi himself.

No, he clearly says in the end that he never knew how to stop this spiral. He does what is expected of him, up to the point where he needs to cross the line to stay alive. Even in the end, one could guess that he is invading west America because I imagine that's what the people expect of him, or he would face a coup. That's why the ending of the series doesn't make sense in my opinion, the fuhrer of America cannot just call off the attack without having the entire army, the politics and all the nazis of America condemning him for showing signs of weakness....

I agree. The historical Nazis were pretty good at infiltrating resistance movements by blackmailing people they captured. They would say, "Work for us and your family won't be sent to a concentration camp." They were also pretty fanatical about security. That's how Hitler was able to stay alive until the end. I'm sure the alternate history Nazis would have the same qualities.

Yeah unfortunately Amazon cut Man In The High Castle short. They had plans to go up to 6 seasons, but in the midst of Season 3 Amazon told the show writers that the show would only be given 1 more season and they'll have to wrap it up. Ducks because it could have been a lot better if the writers weren't forced to condense everything into 1 last season, which made it sucky.

@easyben21

I think. Earlier in the season John smith got to experience what life was like had he won the war, he got to see his son and his family and we as the viewer also got to see him as a different person under those circumstances. He mentioned to julia one of the things that surprised him about the war was that he was good at following orders, he was good at leading men. He felt had he stayed there it could have corrupted him/changed him. John Smith started out joining the nazi party at the end of WW2 to make sure his family was safe and that he did what he could to survive. he even made the moral choice not to help a friend because it would of harmed him and the look of horror on his face when he see's his friend again shows us that he realized he had changed. After that, I think due to all the years of living in that headspace as an officer and as a nazi changed him, it wasn't easy to change back to the way he had been because he had spent so long being that top officer. While I agree I felt they could have done it better justice, the reason he shot himself though proves he regretted what he had become and that he failed to stop himself.

S4.E09... This should’ve been the ending and there should’ve been a season 5 to end the show properly. Smith is such a good character that i began to side with him and hated the resistance. Wyatt is ok but Juliana is so boring. it’s Rome all over again. I’m pretty sure a lot of American presidents wanted to do that to Hoover. This scene was so good and then the next episode just derailed everything... I think, we can all agree, that this episode should be the real final episode. They divided the empire; The end of this season was such a shame. A real disappointment for an otherwise very good season. It really felt rushed towards the end. And here’s the thing... Smith was kinda the show's main character. Season 1 he was the antagonist. Season 2 and 3 he had become an antihero and by season 4 Juliana's arc had been so far relegated to the side, that Smith and Helen were constantly centre stage with the Japanese plot being the next most interesting. The show went out of its way to make clear that John was never a die-hard Nazi. Every deed and decision he’d ever made he’d done for his family. The tragedy of his character was supposed to be that he could only go upwards onto ever more shaky ground, or come crashing down with his wife and kids' fates in the balance. To all of a sudden take a 180 with his character feels so cheap and forced to me. Why is he going full steam ahead with plans for Holocaust.3.0 when he and his family are safe? Because he “didn’t know how” to stop it? Really!? But his mate, Bill, could turn the planes around with a single order and publicly throw away his badge? Not to mention that’s terribly unrealistic for a nation where significant portion of the population are extremely indoctrinated and at least half the top military staff in the American Reich are still die-hard Nazis. This needed another fucking season. We should’ve had John lose his sanity over Thomas and kidnap him. It would’ve made for great storytelling. If the writers wanted to drum up the “Absolute power corrupts absolutely” trope, they could’ve... but not in half a bloody episode! Way to butcher 4 seasons worth of character development in 30 fucking minutes. :(

Considering it was a series about Nazis, pointing who is the evil one is not easy. Everybody only had motivations to do what they did, but also many of them used those motivations as an excuse to release their inner demons. Smith at that point of the story accumulated a lot of demons that his other self in the other universe didn't have, even Kido who seemed to be honorable was in charge of repression and torture, he also had his demons. I think the message of the series is that everything that surround us is too damn fragile, only takes a crazy man with a crazy idea to create a world like that one.

The good guys did win, dumbass. The Japanese left and Whitcroft representing the American Nazis pretty clearly is going to try and restore the Republic. Smith basically said it during the Denver episode. "Why don't we just go all the way?" "Bide your time, Bill." The reason people were hoping for a redemption arc is that, properly done, it would have been earned. Everything Smith thought he was doing to protect his family, ended up destroying it. The eugenics laws killed his son, the state brainwashed one daughter, the other hates him, and his wife tried to have him killed. It would have been a fantastic story.

I always wondered if Smith's "absolute autonomy" really mean that, had he renounced the Nazi worldview, that the Reich would have stood idly by and calmly accepted this. It is interesting why his wife of Smith cries when she sees the secret plans of concentration camps - she still needs to remember quite well the pre-war laws of segregation in the USA in the early 1940s. =/ The series was initially curious, but in the middle it began to degrade.

Nikolay Pavlenko the idea that segregation wasn’t prevalent in the North a very common misconception. For just one example, Dietrich Bonhoeffer (the German pastor who famously took part in a plot to kill Hitler) spent a few years in New York City. While there, he was kicked out of a restaurant for daring to bring his black friend with him. It was then that Bonhoeffer began to think, “If it can happen here in America, then it can happen in my native Germany.” A few years later, the Nazis came to power. There were also plenty of race riots that took place in the North well into the 1970s. One famous photo from that era shows a white Bostonian using an American flagpole as a spear against black protesters. The North was just as racist as the South, they just took great pains to keep quiet about it or hide it afterwards.

This came way out of left field for John, like I get it he is men't to be the big bad but after spending so much time with the man over four seasons and watching Him put his life on the line for his family this feels like the witters only remembered at the last moment "oh shit he is a Nazi and he hasn't really done any A-typical Nazi stuff... I know lets just make he do the Constriction camp thing that will make the Fans hate him" the Fans "WTF" like honestly having John have to confront his Jewish friend in the other universe and come to the realization of what he did right after the end of the war and how much it did break him and for them to just say "oh ye he is the Big bad guy" just feels rushed and out of place, this show up to the last episodes was brilliant but they really did drop the ball at the end.

Not even Himmler believed in their own ideology, for many of them it was just a game of power. I think that from the Nazis, the only one with an idea to pursue was Heussman. Smith was pragmatic, and not necessarily a good person (he sold his own friend), so following Nazi ideas to kill "enemies of the state" makes sense for him, his power was directly related to make the American Nazi elite happy, and at the same time get rid of a resistance that was gaining more power, a resistance led by black people, something that the white eastern population (already aligned with Nazi ideas) would never allow to reach power or rights. I would say his profile is similar to Stalin.
