Discovering the Ancient Greek City of Thebes

Does anyone know why the ancient Greeks called the city in Egypt 'Thebes'? Also, given that they did call it 'Thebes' could some of the mythology refer to Egyptian Thebes rather than Greek Thebes? There seems to be some risk of confusion.

Incestuous marriage was common in Egypt, so could Oedipus be a king of Egyptian Thebes?
