The scarlet ibis is hard to miss! This absolutely stunning, brightly colored bird is a remarkable sight to see. Scarlet ibises are found throughout South America and the Caribbean islands. they inhabit wetlands and other marshy habitats, including mudflats, mangroves, shoreline, shallow bays, lakes, estuaries, and rainforest. Scarlet ibises are highly migratory and are able to fly on very long distances; during migration, they move as flocks in a classic V formation
The adult scarlet ibis measures about 55-63cm. The male is typically slightly larger than the females. These males will weigh about 1.4kg. The scarlet ibis has a wingspan which typically measures 54 cm.
Only the wing tip deviates from the characteristic scarlet colour. These tips are black. A juvenile Scarlet ibis is a mix of grey, brown, and white. As it grows, a heavy diet of red crustaceans produces scarlet coloration. When feeding, they use their distinctive long, thin bills to probe for food in soft mud or under plants. Scarlet ibises are carnivores and mainly feed on insects especially scarabs and ground beetles. They also consume shrimp, small crabs, mollusks and other crustaceans. When they need to communicate with each other, the birds will make a honking noise

shcarlet ibises are serially monogamous; they form pairs that remain faithful within a single breeding season and cohabitant, sharing parental responsibilities for the young. To attract a female, the male will perform a variety of mating rituals such as "preening, shaking, bill popping, head rubbing, and high flights. There is a gestation period of just under a week before the female will lay three to five eggs. These are then incubated between the male and the female for 19-23 days. The pair will remain faithful for the entire time they are raising the chicks. Fledgling takes place at around 35 days old and they become independent at 75 days old. By the age of 2 years, the young ibises have transformed into their scarlet coloration.
