Is there any reason you can't soften the area around "pipe opal" with water before digging them out?

prob cuz water is heavy and difficult to get there because the air is dry and dry air picks up moisture rather quickly so all of it will just evaporate so to bring enough water down there and have it be use-able would be very difficult.
