I can't blame the dog for stopping at the herring: I would have sent the dog on and ate it myself. Smoked herring is awesome! Still, dog-nose is powerful stuff. I once went deer hunting and had to leave my (not any kind of "tracker" breed) dog at the cabin while I walked into the woods. Completely new territory for him, yet when he bolted through an opened door I heard his collar jingling, and soon saw him running full tilt (and he was a FAST dog) in the PRECISE footsteps I took through the grass, nose to the ground. He only became confused when my trail disappeared in the elevated blind I was in. Had to take him into the blind with me. No deer that day, but the dog had fun: They like to hang out with their people.

They let the dog smell him in the suit, and let the dog watch him run off. The suit itself and those sprays probably have a scent of their own, despite the claim that they don't. And only 5 minutes. What about after a day?

Also, a fugitive wouldn't be waiting around to be caught, they would be running as far as they can. This whole test rig is flawed.

I wonder if the dog would be fooled if he had a friend along the trail and they swapped clothes. would he follow the smell on the convicts clothes? Aka the friend. Or would he be able to follow the scent of the person themself?
