Wrong. It was a brilliant move by Jacob. He realized that they were trying to make him seem incompetent for the show, so he decided to use the hash brown issue to make the captain realize how petty he was being. Jacob never snitched or cried about being targeted, he chose to lash out at the captain for pawning him as incompetent for the show. That young man is going places!
