u represents the degree of membership i.e. how much does it belong to a particular set. So there cant be an element which can "over-belong" to a set i.e > 1 OR "under-belong" to a set i.e. < 0. but it can partially belong 0 < x < 1, not belong at all x = 0 or completely belongs x = 1. Hence, 0
