Discrimination Firsthand -- Experiences of mental health-related stigma and discrimination

Stigma and discrimination have been described by many people with mental health issues as being worse than the mental health problem itself. The SAPPHIRE Research Programme on Stigma and Discrimination in Mental Health [www.sapphire.io...] aims to better understand the nature and effects of discrimination and stigma and to find effective ways to counter them.
Research by our team at King's College London has shown that hearing firsthand experiences can help to reduce stigma. Documenting experienced discrimination is also a vital foundation for discovering how best to approach changing society to put an end to mental health discrimination. In SAPPHIRE's MIRIAD study [www.sapphire.io... ], we used our DISC scale [ www.sapphire.io...] to ask mental health service users about their experiences of discrimination ('being treated unfairly'). Here we present findings from our thematic analysis of the examples they gave for the main life areas where they reported discrimination. These are shown in the form of fictional statements and scenes.
