I have recently discovered liquid gum arabic and I've made a calligraphy ink out of Lamy Dark Lilac which is a highly saut after fountain pen ink and its just as gorgeous out of a dip nib as it is with a fountain pen

Oooo, yes! Gum arabic is so fun to play with! That sound fabulous. It's so great when you find the perfect ink colour and can use it in all the ways.

Thanks for th very informative video on inks. I can find ink online, but can't find ink in any retail stores. I remember seeing ink in stores everywhere.

Love it, recently obtained a hand cut quill and needed a new ink. My ink is beautiful but it's a very wet fountain pen ink and causes me to dip about every other letter, not calligraphy script either just basic cursive and print, so I ordered the iron gall from you guys, especially since I'm learning Spencerian. I'll probably see it around my bday the 28th or early next year! Can't wait to try it!

Wonderful video! Really cleared up my doubts on which inks to buy. I use Sumi ink for my dip- pen calligraphy. Depending on the nib, I find this ink quite compatible with almost any paper. I’ve purchased iron gall ink from an Etsy seller but found it a little too runny for my likes. Perhaps I’ll try the gum Arabic method. Thanks!

Hello! I'm delighted it helped. I don't use Sumi ink very regularly - I'm probably too used to the thin-ness of the iron gall. I'd be intrigued to know how our iron gall ink compares to the one you've used. I find that over time the iron gall gets darker and denser, which makes for very pleasurable calligraphy!

Thank you for making this video. It cleared up some confusion on my part. Right now I am using Winsor&Newton ink, which according to some is far from ideal for a beginner like me. To he honest, it just happened to be the first bottle in a veeeery long row of bottles and I just went for it. And so far I have no complaints at all about it. I only got into the calligraphy game very recently, because of a knee injury that kept me home most of the time instead of being more active as usual. I decided I wanted to learn Copperplate calligraphy, despite not having any knowledge of calligraphy whatsoever. Initially I was a bit overwhelmed by the choices of ink, not helped by the fact that German - my native language - has two different words for „ink“, depending on the writing instrument it is used in: „Tusche“ is usually referred to as the kind of ink that the nib/brush is dipped into, whereas „Tinte“ is usually used when referring to the stuff you put in a fountain pen. But people being people and therefore rarely getting their terminology right, also use it as a blanket term for both types of ink.

Hi Tim, thank you for your kind words. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! It will be so interesting to see what you think of other inks now you are used to the Windsor & Newton one. Hopefully you'll find calligraphy even more pleasurable to do with really good ink!

I want to start learning calligraphy but kinda sad after knowing the inks are different. I love my fountain pen inks and have a bit too many of them so I thought learning calligraphy would help me to use them all. Will using gum arabic to thicken the ink affect the ink color and properties(shading,sheening,shimmering)?

Can Ink go bad after a few years if opened and not used?
@MeticulousInkFineStationery5 жыл бұрын
Hi Helsey, it really depends on the ink. Most ink dry out or evaporate if left for a very long time, so they get thicker. If that's happened then you can try adding a tiny bit of water or gum arabic (depending on what the ink is made of). Do you have a secret stash of really old ink?

Enroll in Becca Courtice's FREE basic strokes calligraphy course! It is amazing and sets you off on the right foot. Why? Because there are actually seven "strokes" that calligraphy is made from. She has a youtube channel called, "The Happy Ever Crafter" Also, use a straight nib holder, the oblique ones were made for right-handed folks! I hope this helps! Seriously, though, check out her KZbin. kzbin.info/door/iLSEwYKrRPY-wC758azVqA
