Elo based 1v1 mode which gives you random beatmaps from a selected star range. This way you can't just dominate one field like aim or speed but you have to learn a bit of everything. (This is just an idea I thought up in like 5 seconds, I have no clue how they would actually make it, if it's even possible.)

One very good bit of drama I found was Peppy absolutely refusing to turn osu! into a video recorder by implementing exporting the replays as a video. Very understandable, and he was still nice enough to say that if someone DID go through all the effort to make it and make it good, only then would he maybe merge something like that.

Developer turned into JOEY from Beneath A Steel Sky halfway through lmao. Honestly though, as a developer myself, I really love how Git makes collaborative coding so accessible. And Botsu (hehe) can be proud their code made it into the codebase of a large open source project this early on.
