The shade provided by the taller plants does help protect against drought, so it's kind of a trade off. I worked at a barn where they would brush hog the pastures maybe twice a summer but when they let it grow long it was mostly tall grass and not weeds, like a nice hay field. They limed the pastures in the fall, I think that higher ph helped the grass outcompete the weeds.

I just started volunteering at an animal rescue. They have 13 horses and ponies in their care, and I clean the fields for them. I have to thank this channel for helping me to learn so much about horses and their behaviour. The horses are all well cared for, with space to roam and a shelter to come and go. They're retired to this sanctuary, and all have their little groups with horsey friends and company. Thanks Rick for helping me to learn so much

It is true that you should not cut grass too short in order to maintain a healthy lawn or pasture. But I do get your point. If you cut the draws at 4 inches and keep it that way, you are going to have to mow more frequently which is a pain.

Pruning your trees early spring or late fall is good . I usually will prune off to a certain length late fall and then further pruning early spring when new growth begins so I can see where the budding & flowering will be. That way I'm not cutting off crucial parts of the tree. Most trees or bushes require certain pruning to promote buds or flowers. Best to give additional food minerals or miracle grow in early morning or late evening watering etc in the heat will cause wilting which kills off the new growth quickly you can Google for the kind of trees you have for their care as each kind needs different pruning to promote good growth future buds flowering for planting new trees.

Rick, what do you do when you encounter a bear while riding?
@beverlydavis5940 Жыл бұрын
I know I say this every year, but gosh I love when buddy gets so dark with that blond mane, he is so beautiful. As far as pasture grass, once it gets longer than 4 inches it gets loaded down with parasites, so I think you keep your pastures just fine to keep your horses nice and healthy. With the amount of years you have had horses with very little serious sicknesses speaks volumes on the care you give and their diet. So you must be doing something right.

I think your pasture where the boys are leisurely browsing looks great 👍. My female cat begs me to let her drink from running water at the sink . Uh a not going to start that even though I know her brother paws around in their bowl of water and makes it less desirable. Have a automatic water bowl coming which I think she'll like. They're apartment cats so there's no safe way to let them outside. Unfortunately. Have a great week and give those two good boys and Mokie pets for me. 🐴🐎🐱🐈🐈⬛

I have learned from error that if I do not cut my pasture I end up with weeds almost as tall as me, and once it gets to that point it takes quite some time for the grass to come back!!

Thank you, Rick 🥰 Wow, what a beautiful Texas sky ❤ Your pasture is looking gorgeous, so much better since you got your tractor and started mowing regularly 😊 In my experience the more you mow your pasture (so long as it's not too short) the better grazing that you end up with, especially over winter grazing 😉 Hugs for your boys and have a wonderful day, Rick 🥰🥰

Really enjoy your morning walks and chats. One thing I would suggest, trim your bushes next to the house away from the house. They hold moisture and rub against the house. I have the same bushes, boxwoods, and keep them a good 6-8 inches away from the house and porch and rail. Never had a rot or moisture or mold problem. Your hedge trimmers will do what is needed..

I’ve read that if you cut your pasture twice, once in June and once in August, that’s your best defence against weeds. If you mow to frequently the weeds will start to grow shorter to compensate and then you’re less likely to be able to cut them with a mower. My sister did frequent mowing of a thistle patch last summer and that is what she noticed. The thistle stopped trying to shoot up tall.

So sorry for everything you're going through! I've had a back operation about 30 years ago and you've got to be really careful and take things slowly after the operation. It's not not sprint but rather a journey to recovery. I hope they gave you detailed instructions on what to do and what to avoid, and how to start strengthening your core muscles again. In my experience the stronger your core muscles, the less chances of problems in the future. Insist on good after-care instructions if they weren't very helpful in that regard after your surgery. I wish you well and will keep you in my prayers x 🙏

You know, I really love your videos. You put the horse's well being first and share your knowledge with us. Yet you use barbed wire to keep your horses in the pasture. As someone with so much knowledge you should know just how dangerous barbed wire is for animals. We once had a horse that ripped open her side because of barbed wire (she thankfully was fine). We also had a mini Shetland pony that had an accident as a foal where she ran into barbed wire. She had to undergo eye surgery and as a result was blind in her right eye
