People don't realize that there is a huge difference in caulking and "Building Sealant". It sticks, many colors and 300% more expansion rate. They don't sell it a home improvement stores. I use the "GEO-CELL", no problems, no separation, no cracks and I am extremely happy. I did not go grab a tube for the exact name but a search should show GEO building sealant.

Maybe mention skipping some steps by getting Boral's Drain-N-Dry Lath.

If acrylic paint is not recommended because it's impermeable to water vapor, it begs the question--- why is a hydrophobic surface coating advised to keep surface free from dirt?

Question: with regards to attaching something to 2" thick EIFS say like a mail box, garden hose reel, downspout straps, It was mentioned (minute 4:45) about using a sleeve and then a screw, is there hardware specifically for this application?
@usexterior Жыл бұрын
Nothing special is needed. We use a pvc plastic sleeve (plumbing section at the hardware store) just needs to ridged enough to take the tightening without crushing.

This was a great over view of EIFS and stucco. Dryvit came before STO by the way!

Great video. I have a question please. Can you paint over a hydro phobic coating ? Will it adhere and will it breathe ?
@usexterior3 ай бұрын
So a short answer is yes, but, and it is a big but. I would take a section in a spot not real visible, tape off a 12” x 12” square. Paint half of it with a good primer. Let it cure - and then perform cross hatch cuts. Apply tape to the areas with cuts. No more than 10-15% of the coating should come off on the tape. I suggest this anytime you have a question if a product will adhere to another. You can use the other 6” to test your coating directly if you want without the primer.

Great vid, but I am regular guy and most of this was over my head, for example the reference to EIFS.. I have a 22 year old house and I want to, I guess, "refresh" my dryvit (the windows has the nail leak stuff, etc). So what are my options and how do I know if I have a competent painter. Sorry for not being knowledgeable.

which manufacturer's system is the leaset expensive? yellow sto, blue drivit,red parex or white senergy???
@usexterior2 жыл бұрын
They are all priced equalish. It really comes down availability, local relationships and distributor knowledge. A distributor that goes the extra mile for me is worth a few percentage points more.

I have a brick house built in 1954. All the brick is in great shape but it is a very drafty house the interior is ferring strip and plasterboard so no insulation value I was considering this system to create an r value and reduce draft is this a possibility or a bad idea on a house?
@usexterior2 жыл бұрын
This type of system is perfect for that type of application.

@@usexterior research ive done(not much) looks like roughly $7/sq. Ft. Installed? Is that close
@usexterior2 жыл бұрын
@@rickhoupt6933 To many variables to say yes or no. Geographic's, detailing and actual product selection play a role in the Sq. Ft. price. Best recommendation visit either EIMA or AWCI and find a contractor in your area.

where does thermocromex stand in terms of comparision
@usexterior Жыл бұрын
Have not used it or seem it used. In looking at it I would compare it to a hard coat stucco finish coat / decorative finish.

Is it true that EIFS has some lawsuits?
@usexterior Жыл бұрын
There were a few several years ago. I am unaware of any now

you forgot to tell the people that stucco simply WILL crack , the nature of stucco , and also alot to do with vibration such as doors slamming or garage door , or heavy swing gates etc .

It can be for sure. Its original design was great. Stucco systems are meant to be 3 coat systems. Base/Scratch Coat, Brown Coat, Color Coat. Each coat should be no less than 1/4" Thick, and up to 1/2" Thick. At the end, you essentially have 3/4" to 1.5" of cement encasing your house. Today they cheap out on the system. They use either 1 coat, or 2 coats, and then paint it as the "color coat". This leaves less than a 1/2" of cladding on the house which means I can walk up to your house with a pencil and poke holes through it.....

As matter of fact, the EIFS products and systems are excellent. What is usually "junk" is the application. Too often the applicators take shortcuts which compromise the integrity of the system causing cracks, leaks, etc. If the applicators are properly trained and the products are properly installed and maintained EIFS will out-perform most other wall claddings.
