To me, a bit is smallest unit of information in digital computation. A bit is a portmanteau of "binary digit", which can be represented as a "1" or "0". "On" or "Off", "True" or "False". Chaining bits together, call it a laugh train if you will, will get you multiple bits. "101" represents "5" in decimal, for example. Bring in the whole laugh train station, you could get something like: "01110100 01101000 01101001 01110011 00100000 01101001 01110011 00100000 01100001 00100000 01100010 01101001 01110100". I hope this becomes the accepted definition of "the bit".
