Tush, with the PI metering unit, you need two, one is to be on the car with a second unit off for a recalibtation in England. You will only get about 6000 miles out of each PI metering unit before it must be sent off for recalibration again. A PI metering unit can be swapped over in about 40 minutes. It is worth it, the PI is a blast, but it will wreck your engine and your fuel finances when (not if) it starts squirting in too much petrol. I would carry a full set of 6 spare injectors too. The Lucas high pressure fuel pump in the boot is terrible, the pump overheats and vapor locks in hot weather and heavy traffic and the car cuts out; try to find an upgraded pump. One must only use brand new big end bolts on that 2.5 PI engine.

Hi Tush, definitely a long list. I just got back from the UK and a friend has 1991 Alfa nice car, only saw one TR6 on the road in my time there. Look forward to the Webers going back on. I haven’t been able to get my webers running smooth. I did not know that the individual manifolds would make it harder to tune, that’s the set up I have, maybe it’s time to consider a new manifold. Looking forward to the project Videos.

Definitely you have a problem with the size of your thrust washer for second gear. Mine was too thick to get the correct play (instead I had preload!). It was too big and pushed off end circlip. I can send the page of Bentley manual that talks about checking endplay for that bushing.

As the selection of cars grows the winter projects grows. I believe you still have a hut filled with Capri's along with that TR 8. Chef at one point you mentioned you'd taken over Les' TR 6 project are those two also still around? I'm always glad to watch what you are up to and the priorities on this winter list sound very interesting. Take care.

Hi Barry, unfortunately, I’ve had to divest myself of the Capris…storage issues and costs were adding up….in reality, I probably wouldn’t have even gotten around to them for at least 10 years….I have Les’s TR6 project in storage…the frame and body will most likely help me along with my 70 PI project.

Lots to keep you busy and us amused. I have decided not to strip my TR4 this winter, but I would like to do some small projects on it. I do have some other projects such as building a new work bench, the one I have used for the past 5 years whilst rebuilding the TR3A is too small. I also need to take a look at the head gasket on my 1953 Little Grey Furgie tractor as well as fit an air filter. The red UK phone box which I am turning into an outside bar needs finishing too, I started that before the TR3A; the door needs rubbing down and repainting, I need to fit some lights and shelving as well as a refrigerator. So plenty to do here too, and watch your videos of course.

You've got plenty to keep you busy when the snow flies, Chef! I'll be particularly interested in the Weber conversion. I have a pair of 40 DCOE destined to go on my TR4 (it originally had Japanese SUs, probably from a 240Z). I know the jetting for my car will be different than yours, but maybe I can pick up some other ideas. I've already upgraded the original pedal/throttle shaft on the car, with a third Delrin bushing to eliminate any flex. The manifold I will be using is a one piece Weiand, if memory serves (it's in storage, so I can't easily check right now). My other concerns with the Webers are heat shields and some kind of supplementary support since they hang out pretty far from the head. I also have to figure out an air box/filter to fit over air horns that will be going on the carbs. In TR4 there isn't much room due to the inner fender arch. Might need to modify that.
@cheftush
@cheftush 10 ай бұрын
Hi Alan, they do sell heat shields for the bottoms of the carbs…I’m going to try and run without them….my header is ceramic coated so it does run a little cooler combined with my wing vents…the hardest part is getting the linkage to work smoothly and get the carbs balanced…
@alanm.4298
@alanm.4298 10 ай бұрын
@@cheftush Now that you mention it, my header is wrapped to reduce heat too... no fender vents yet, but they are in the game plan.

Ah, mine used to pop out of 2nd gear on decel as well. But mine had about 140k miles in 1980, so probably just worn out. It became second nature for this then-starving student to just hold it in gear
@cheftush

Unfortunately, I can’t even hold it on decel. It pretty aggressively pops out. I can keep it from popping if I keep light throttle on it….

Cheftush is slowly going to the dark side, an Alfa Romeo. You should know I have a hardtop for a series 2 Alfa that I'm fitting........ Or maybe I'm going to the dark side after restoring an Alfa.

Actually, getting away from the dark side 😉 I sold the Alfa to its new owner “ Doc” a couple of years ago…Doc brings it back each year for some additional work…last year, we did a Performance Exhaust, Brake and suspension upgrade.

I'd be glad to see those Cosmic (?) alloys go back on the 1060 TR3A, they would look good with the rally stripe and better than the Minilite replicas which are more 60s / 70s. But I'd really like to see one of the cars get some nice correct wire wheels - ideally the TR250 !

Please do an in-depth analysis of the transmission issue where it jumps out of gear on downshift to 2nd, and perhaps you have an idea before you start? My 73 TR6 on down shift from 4th to 3rd has a similar issue, if I let off the gas or depress the clutch, it will come out of gear, attempting to put it back and the gears grind without shifting back to 4th or 2nd, extremely annoying.
@cheftush
@cheftush 10 ай бұрын
Yes, I’ll take it apart and hopefully we will clearly see and issue. I was thinking that it might be a broken top hat bushing but we will see!

I see you mentioned throwout bearing. Maybe me too, on my six? Can you describe a little bit (sound) upon cold start up. My question how does a throw bearing "act" ... I think you said it that way. Can you describe the sound upon cold startup. Whirring, chattering, gravelly spinning are words in my vocab , would any apply? Just when you engage the clutch? Excellent comment about body work in cold conditions. thx
@cheftush
@cheftush 10 ай бұрын
The throwout bearing usually makes a whirring sound and can be a bit gravelly with the clutch totally disengaged. When you engage the clutch, the sound can be diminished signifcantly until you let your foot off the clutch again...

@cheftush Hi cheftush just updating you on my search for a car dipping facility in ontario. Have you heard anything good or bad about PPS Ltd Brampton? They quoted $2750 Canadian for the body shell but I would have to find someone to prime it following stripping because they don't have a painting facility. I've talked to Elin about doing the repair work fitting new floors sills etc. Do you think strip then repair or repair then strip? I would appreciate your advice. Do you think I'm going over the top stripping and just be satisfied with manual rust/paint removal? Many thanks Phil
@cheftush
@cheftush 9 ай бұрын
@@philhunt4070 hi Phil, have not heard anything good or bad regarding PPS. Have you considered soda blasting? I like to have the car cleaned prior to starting metal work as it will uncover everything that needs to be fixed vs finding something later. The process would be to get it stripped, then epoxy primed. Repairs done and then repair areas epoxy primed. I had the front apron on my 60 TR3A soda blasted. sodapro.com
