While some retro gamers play and enjoy modern games, most of us still have issues with them. I discuss some of the main problems that people have with modern gaming (where retro gaming does a better job).

This video is not intended to imply that modern games are completely irredeemable. There are plenty of modern games that I enjoy (AAA or other) as I'm sure most of you do as well. This is merely a video covering some of the common complaints we all have. Also, a lot of you have mentioned Indie games, to which the criticisms mentioned in this video generally don't apply. I'm mostly talking about the big budget "AAA" games here. If you'd like to see a video where I talk about why Indie games are so beneficial to gaming, you can view that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZizp4mMg6Zlq5Y

How are indie games supposed to count the same as modern games? A game that is explicitly designed to play like an older game counts the same as a retro game. "Retro" doesn't mean a game is actually old, it includes the games that are styled after those older games, which accounts for about 95% of indie games.

They fucked up Mario Odessey, in that game they removed the lives system and when you die you lose 10 coins. It is so easy to get coins so it is impossible to get a game over unless you just off a cliff over and over until you die. The only modern game I ever played was the Sims 3! I really didn't even pay attention to the world of modern gaming because I really loved playing that one already, and the few times I see the Sims 4 I was disappointed by its sallowness, and this actually felt like a theme in modern games... @@omarsheriff51 certainly a fair point that single player AAA games aren't nearly as predatory as the majority of multiplayer AAA games. You're right that they don't have all of the loot boxes and pay-to-win mechanics of the multiplayer games. But as far as DLC is concerned, yes it existed back in the 90's with games like Sonic and Knuckles, but it was an extremely uncommon practice back then. Now the majority of even single player games have DLC. With games like Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon Zero Dawn, which are both fantastic games, it's almost worth it to wait until a definitive edition comes out so you can get the full experience without having to buy extras. I miss being able to buy a game and be assured that that was it, I had the full experience right there.
@TheYoshiFanatic
@TheYoshiFanatic 2 жыл бұрын
@@omarsheriff51 that's a good point, most of the time the DLC a game offers is just a bonus, and not integral to the experience the game offers. With my examples of Horizon Zero Dawn and Ghost of Tsushima, both DLCs offer story content as well as new weapons or other items to collect. These simply serve to enhance the existing full experience. Still, I do feel like I'm missing out if I don't buy the DLC in this case. Admittedly, I'm a cheapskate, and I probably should be willing to shell out the extra $10 or $20. Maybe I'm just spoiled by games like Celeste, The Messenger and Hollow Knight, which offer this sort of content as a free update. I will acquiesce and agree that this type of DLC, while I still find it annoying, is acceptable. What I can't get behind is DLC that locks important or at least meaningful content behind a paywall, such as Zelda Breath of the Wild and Metroid Samus Returns, which both have a harder difficulty only accessible via paid DLC or mandatory amiibos. Admittedly, this isn't the norm, but it certainly does exist.

I'm a 50 year old gamer and all I can say is DITTO DITTO DITTO. You nailed it. Every point you made was dead on. Although I do like an epic, modern, photo-realistic gaming experience, I would like to see more variety in game development, perhaps some "B" grade titles like we saw back in gen 5 and gen 6 consoles. It seems like all games these days are either a AAA, potentially broken, big-budget title OR an indie game with nothing in between. I want another WAVE RACE game! Thanks for speaking the truth. Great video.

Older comment, I know, but just wanted to voice my agreement. I'm really fond of games from around 2000 (plus/minus a few years), and the gameplay/design sensibilities of that era don't seem as common now. Or maybe we just aren't looking in the right places? There's usually a considerable difference between an older game with a budget, which made the most of the technology, versus a newer indie game that's trying to mimic older games.

I think simplicity has a lot to do with it for me. Today, you hop into a game and, like you said, you need to sit through a drawn out opening. Once the games starts, you usually have a huge open world to explore, tons of side activities and quests to do, random loot and items to find, and tons of different skills and systems (like item crafting) to keep track of. It can be pretty overwhelming. Sometimes you just want to pop in Castlevania, smack some demons and monsters with you whip and give Dracula a piece of your mind.

There's many modern games that do the same thing tho, with mechanics that are pretty simple. Even Dark Souls is pretty simple mechanics-wise in it's core. Think of a game like Dragon's Dogma:Dark Arisen, or Monster Hunter, God Eater, Soul Sacrifice, Toukiden, Samurai Warriors, etc. I'd argue that games like these play more like retro games rather than "AAA" games.

However, yes, older gaming consoles didn't have this issue. Just swap a cartridge to play the next game, no problem.

Same for me, used to be in a clan for some time but a lot of clans were cheating to get themselves to the top, and it started to be more and more about money and winning what ever it takes, even if it means cheating, the fun was all gone... After such attitude, I was disgusted eventually, and I left that clan for good... Later on, after that, I was watching many games clips that were about the SNES, the real deal, physical media, and my top favorite consoles and games, eventually I found my way into retro gaming, and started to build up my collection even though it was a small one as it had always been, and probably remain small, my friends thought I had gone bonkers, but at least my sister had my back...

I think in those 35 minutes I moved around, killed maybe 10 people.. the rest was narrative, story telling and cut scenes. Firstly, it took more than 35 minutes before I could play it because of the huge download, system update and god knows what else. But its alarming to me how little gameplay was in that game. Story telling is good, but game designers can and should make sure that the elements are split between gameplay and story telling. Mario games have stories, but within 2 mins your doing your thing. Thats a good balance.

I prefer characters that are already made. But the emphasis these days is on charachter customisation which means the character you control is essentially a blank slate in many games. Also padding is a huge problem in modern games. You get a masterpiece once in a while that can justify the time but generally its padding. I guess my biggest problem with modern gaming is that I just don't have the time to invest 100 hours in just a single game. That's why I like Arcade games because the playability is what draws you to play it repeatedly.

Something I'd add is that every AAA modern game just goes for the ultrarealism look, instead of having a unique artstyle, which makes every game look exactly the same with only minor variations in setting, but not enough to really stand out. Games like Wind Waker, Jet Grind Radio, Limbo, Cuphead, Ori, Gris, Okami, etc. will never age a day due to their distinctive artstyles, but games like Detroit and The Last of Us Pt 2 will look outdated in just a few years' time.

I've found myself just often grabbing digital versions of old games on newer systems. For example, the Sega Model 2 arcade games on ps3 and 360 (Fighting Vipers, Daytona USA, Sonic the Fighters and Virtua Fighter 2.) Quick games to jump into, have updated graphics, and never had physical releases. I hate not having physical, but it's the only way to get those games aside from spending a lot of money for older versions.

@IcarusKid I went on a journey to find CRTs to play my newly acquired retro consoles (what an odd phrase lol) and they were surprisingly hard to find. Thankfully I ended up with a 13" and 19" CRT (one for backup) and have been playing my NES, SNES and others on the format and display they were intended.

This video hits home. My first console was a NES, but I was born in 92 so really the PS1 era was where I started off. Modern games can appeal to me at times, but the downloads and updates have really hurt everything. Xbox 360/PS3 era was not so bad, usually these updates took at most 5 minutes or so even on terrible internet. In the PS4/Xbox One generation, I kinda fell off the wagon. I live in a rural area with poor internet, so updates can take half a day on these consoles. This in turn made me play these consoles less, and like you said, now everytime I turn those consoles I can't even play them. I really love the 6th generation of consoles my self, but I have found that 7th gen is probably my cut off. I probably have 30 or so games so far(and still buying) for 360/PS3 where as on Ps4/Xbox One I have maybe 5 to 8 games for each and I dont see myself buying anymore games for those consoles. Several of those games are just remasters of old games I love anyways.

You nailed it with your analysis. The microtransactions are definitely annoying, but my biggest gripe is that modern games are too often released in a buggy, unfinished state. Sometimes the updates to the games can fix one problem while introducing others. Updates even end up diminishing the gameplay you’ve gotten used to. For example, I bought my PS4 when it first came out so that I could play Street Fighter 5, as I’m a huge old school Street Fighter fan. After getting to know how a few of the characters played for a few months, Capcom released an update that actually took moves away from some of the characters I’d gotten used to playing with. That was when I was officially done with many modern games. All those months of practice just felt wasted with the latest invasive meddling. Back in my day, games were released in a finalized state, and what you got was what you worked with, bugs and all. And learning how to exploit some of those bugs was part of the fun. It just seems nowadays developers are too reliant on being able to update and can sometimes ruin the experience with incessant tweaks to how the game feels.

I play both modern and retro games, and your points are in general pretty spot on. There are some exceptions I’d like to point out. Not every retro game was a “pick up and play” style of game. For example, plenty of retro RPGs for PC were very in depth and required you to a) read the manual and b) expect to spend up to an hour just creating your character. Plus, many of these games were incredibly long, with some lasting well over 100 hours.

Why I'm not a fan of modern gaming? Oh boy, here goes: -Having to wait 40 minutes to install a game before I can even play it. -DLC for stuff that used to be free like extra costumes, extra modes, sound test, behind the scenes stuff, etc. -Online only games that are going to be useless once the servers go offline. -Every open world and FPS game feels the same with no distinct personality or memorable characters. -No instruction manuals despite there being a spot for it in cases. With that being said there are some things that I do like about modern gaming but I'll save that for later just in case you ever make a "What Retro Gamers Like About Modern Gaming" video. :)

I bought many newer games in recent years that I barely played and although those are AAA titles, It just felt tedious to play them. They whether take an extremely long time to complete or to get anything noticeable done (like you've mentioned) or there's an overwhelming amount of things you can do or need to learn in order to play them (more is not always better), so now they're just collecting dust.

Man, I'm not a content creator, but I've long thought about doing a video to talk about this exact topic, and you pretty much covered everything I've wanted to say. I'm not at all into modern games, and I tell people who try to get me into them that it's mostly because it feels like you're just watching a long movie where occasionally you get to press a button or two. The focus by modern game designers seems to be almost, if not entirely, on trying to make the game look like real life, instead of making it, you know, a GAME. A fun game, preferably. That was everything about the games I grew up on. They created a sense of wonder with the gaming environment, while giving you complete control over your character. Was it sometimes clunky compared to today? Sure, but it was fun being able to just effortlessly press a few buttons and make your character do all sorts of things. Now, everything is tactical and tedious, and you have these giant controllers with a million buttons that you have to memorize what they all do. It's just not for me.

First, congrats on 1k subs! Well deserved :) To the topic at hand, you've touched on the important stuff. The modern experience isn't nearly as pick up and play with drawn out tutorials and constant updates. Then you get to post launch monetization, paying extra for stuff that used to be unlockables for beating the game. Infinite lives, respawns and auto-saves making it pretty hard to 'not' beat a game now. The generic 'me too' fetch quests of some of these open world games. So you summed up basically all my issues. Indies are the best place to recapture some of those retro feels.

Good observations/video! Two things that get me about the current generations are the Progressive move towards games that break down over time such as when servers end and vital update patches can’t be downloaded anymore. A second contention of mine is that in the transition to using grittiness as a marketing feature, Gamers lose out on the universality that old games had when games needed to appeal to a broad range of folks. There is a certain appeal to be able to throw in games and have it be cool for any type of person to be in the room (speaking as a parent, this is a big deal). Yeah, there is an aspect of get off my lawn… But it also explains why I feel little need to leave the house.

You pretty much nailed all the reasons in this video. But the difficulty issue is the one that really bothers me with modern games. They really do hold your hand and the penalty for failure is almost non-existent. Not to get on my soap-box, but I think the aforementioned issue with modern games is actually an issue with our society as a whole. I think the everyone gets a trophy, we don't ever want you to feel bad, if you can't do it we'll just lower the bar for you so you can do it, is negatively impacting our society. And we are seeing the results of this mindset in our society today. Growth, learning, and resiliency happen through failure. Failure is an essential (and valuable) aspect of life that we are trying to have people avoid today. I honestly think a lot of my competitive drive today is a result of hours and hours of frustration from impossibly hard NES games I relentlessly tried to beat as a kid.

So long story, I am 45 years old and while I have enjoyed some modern games I found my love of video gaming was slowly going away and it concerned me. I grew up with Atari, Commodore 64, Vectrex, etc. I loved gaming. But over the years I have had a harder time focusing on the games and just couldn't "get into" them like I used to. And for Christmas my wife got me an NES and a few games which immediately not only rekindled my love of games, really helped bring into focus my problems with modern gaming which is pretty much in line with what you are talking about here. While my old gaming reflexes have gotten rusty over the years, pulling out Mike Tyson's Punch Out and getting to Super Macho Man in my first play in 30 years reminded me of how much I enjoyed gaming. I have since started collecting retro games (currently NES, SNES, Gamecube and PS1&PS2 - on the lookout for a decent Atari) and I haven't looked back. I only play modern games online (Call of Duty, Fortnite) with my sons because we can play together despite living in different places. But I think there is something different about modern gaming versus Retro gaming beyond the "oh that's just what you grew up with" and I think your video nails it and thus I am subscribing for more of this kind of content!

I think that out of all big developers nowadays Nintendo has best games for retro gamers. Their games don't usually have long cutscenes and the basic gameplay is easy to grasp from the beginning but offers a lot for advanced players as well. The best aspect for me is that they don't try to hop into the bandwagon of "mature" and ultrarealistic game design. The main reason I like games is that they offer something that I can't experience elsewhere. If I want to see realistic environment I just go outside. The only complaint I have is that the overall difficulty is a bit too low in most of their games.

Um.... Retro gamers dont like modern games? Depends on what really define as a retro gamer. Im a gamer, Ive been gaming since I was five years old on the Atari 2600, had friends that had NES consoles until we got a Genesis, and Im very much a gamer to this day, I play almost all of it. The single-most problem with modern gaming is the internet and Microsoft. When Microsoft came onto the scene with Xbox, initially, they, presumably, had SEGA on their side. SEGA did, however, pull some really strange moves with the most obvious being sending their mascot immediately to the competition that wanted to bury them in a Senate hearing, still, with the support they got from Microsoft on the Dreamcast, most gamers figured it was a really strong relationship and dubbed the Xbox the Dreamcast 2, though SEGA was everywhere and dropping exclusives everywhere, it was strange. But, thats about all Microsoft really had. They acquired Rare from Nintendo and managed to snag Bungie. The biggest problem is, Xbox was new to the console scene and Sony and Nintendo had spent decades building relationships with developers, earning their trust, and building household names. Xbox had none of that. When Xbox launched, along with it came the beginning of Subscription-based online services. The Dreamcast had online capability, but you werent paying SEGA for SEGA.NET, you were paying for your internet. But once Xbox Live came on the scene, it couldve been the greatest thing anyone had ever seen, if youre a fan of the Angry Videogame Nerd, youd know why, but it began something horrendous instead. Because Microsoft had no prior relationship with developers, especially during the Xbox 360 era, Microsoft turned to what they knew best and their biggest advantage. See, Microsoft didnt have to earn anything, Microsoft had deep pockets and could buy anyone off, but they knew they couldnt buy competition outright, you had to poison the competition by degrees, that meant rather than Microsoft going right after Grand Theft Auto, they offered Rockstar, instead, a fat sum of cash for DLC content that would be exclusive to Xbox, that was the start. Developers later learned that during the development time of game making, they could dissect their games before they went gold and on vacation, and they could sell a base game for $60 and then hold parts or levels of the game in reserve to sell later as add-on content called DLC designed to expand the game for those that wanted more, problem is, instead of a pay once experience forever model, you had to buy additional content thst shouldve been part of the initial purchase from the start. Also, gaming updates allowed for developers to get lazy. In earlier console generations you play tested your games constantly, there were QA teams whose jobs were find bugs and report them to ensure when a game was finally pressed, it was top quality, id it wasnt, reviewers found them and massacred your game in reviews. These days, developers are under crunch times and are so rushed, that they ship a crap product with the intent of updating over time. That still requires man hours, which still costs a publisher money, so why not crank out a quality and complete game from the start? Its been done before for decades. Then came the mobile sphere which made it worse. Free2Play models. The US has never gotten quality mobile games, while Japan hordes all the best games, core gamers would want to play on their phones, and with the Free2Play model came Microtransactions, one of the worst things to happen to gaming in its history. Cosmetic items at a $1 a piece that, to the unititiated eventually became Pay2Win, its free, but to not waste your life away farming, pay some money and finish the game so you can move onto the next one, or spend, literally weeks, farming resources to move to stage 1-2. Eventually, Season Passes ame about that bundled all additional content onto one payment of, generally, $25. This ensured youd get everything post launch, because gamers were catching on, they were getting smart and just waiting for Microsofts next trap, the Game of the Year Edition. Wait a year after the games launch and get everything on a single disc, hopefully to include all the updates making the game what it shouldve been at launch, but a year later. Eventually, companies like Capcom werent satisfied and wanted to pick gamers pockets even more, so now, you have Season 2 Pass for that year thats been emulated by Microsoft with their Killer Instinct franchise and now Nintendo with Smash Bros. Are you seeing a pattern? The point is, internet on consoles introduced the worst thing that could happen to gamers and fans of gaming you didnt see in the retro era, with the exception of one SEGA Genesis game and that was then known as lock-on technology. The internet created a way for game creators to lose their love of developing great games to make the gamer happy into finding ways to pick peoples pockets, especially during financially tight times like now. Its current gen times like these past few that you find just how cruel, greedy, and dishonest human beings really can be, that they'll try to cheat or swindle people lower on the financial ladder with the smallest things picking their pocket $1 at a time, and that they dont care to get ahead so they can buy their fifth house, while the people theyre selling to dont even have a single house thats the difference. The internet for gaming couldve been great for gaming to help in times of the LJN Curse, and made online gaming with friends and family, amazing, but when you buy a game today at $70 and get it home and pop it into your console to find you have a massive update to have to download, even on day 1, most internet providers have data caps and penalties for going over those, that are expensive, and you cant play a single player game without that, your game just got that much more expensive. Its a trickle effect making it unless youre well off, you wont even be able to afford to game again and thats sad.

Interesting video, you mention some points that I didn’t think about but are actually reasons I don’t keep up with modern systems anymore! For me, I don’t have the time to spend to get into the newer games (house, work, kid) which boils down to an hour here or there which is not nearly enough to get into a game for me but perfect for playing my Gameboy. When I was a kid and played games, it was a cozy afternoon or evening and good feelings which all come back when playing retro games :-) My last current gen game that I bought aside from all the indie games was Rainbow six siege as I love tactical shooters, bit that’s basically a short single player game to get you ready for multiplayer (which looks very good but I didn’t have the skills because of sporadic time to practise). Also, I worry about online services being discontinued causing your games to not work anymore, which makes me wonder whether the current youth can be as passionate about their retro games 20 to 30 years from now as we are now (I sure hope so!)

I have to admit, this video hits it right on the head. 41 y/o here who grew up on retro games and still play some modern games to this day. I just recently purchased GT7 (to take a break from F1 2022) and was ecstatic as I haven't played the GT series in YEARS (GT 4 to be exact). As I have been playing this game since launch, I STILL haven't cleared all the cafe "menu books" , and yes I only get a few hours a day to play, but still.... While the game itself is wonderfully fun and beautiful to look at, it is suffering from almost everything mentioned here. The tedious hours put into the introduction of the game just to open things like multiplayer and other things like this is ridiculous. Oh, and speaking of multiplayer for GT 7, please explain to me why I am not able to play my game in single player when the damn servers are offline over 24 hours and I never even wanted to play online anyways! The micro transactions for all of these games are just ridiculous as well to the point of it feeling like extortion of the players, plain and simple. I miss the good ol' days of getting my game that is complete and paid for once and only once lol!!! I hope the younger generations finally have enough sooner or later.... It's just gotten way out of control.

I suppose it boils down to how long modern AAA games are. I only make the time for a special few of them like the modern Doom games, Halo, etc. Also (this may be the collector side of me) I like the idea of retro games being finite. It feels like gaming is growing so fast that every day I fall behind by a dozen good games. Keeping up with modern gaming feels like a lost cause, but retro games I can slowly but surely conquer. Great video!

That must be why modern indie games overwhelm you haha! There's so many it can be hard to keep track of :)

A big reason for me is that modern games always have too much going on, and it strains my eyes to play. I prefer simple, 2d or early 3d games.

Some games require you to do alot of set up and options before starting. But I like the fact that older games can just be turned on and you start playing immediately. I tend to enjoy the old score based arcade ports like Asteroids, Gyruss, and Popeye. Those are games that you can just put on and start playing. I also like the fact that they are shorter. Sometimes I don't feel like playing a long game. So it's easier to play Pac-man for 20 minutes, and Breakout or Pole Position for another 10 or 20 minutes.

All the points you made are spot on and I agree with you 100% on the problems with modern gaming. I grew up with the Nintendo 64 and Sega Dreamcast, eventually ending with Nintendo DS and PlayStation 3. The video game industry is not what it used to be in my opinion.

I prefer 8 bit to 16 bit retro gaming because the games are that much shorter and I can finish a game in 20 min. Also it's instant playing. Don't have to read tutorials, pause the game to see controls, wait for a long drawn out cut scene etc.
@RetroBirdGaming

I forgot about the pausing to look up controls. Definitely annoying.

The older games had less immersive stories but were bright and colorful. This combination of eye candy and imagination is what makes retros so special for me. My mind ran wild hearing those sweet seranades of 8bit and 16bit music and seeing the pixelart. Overstimulated and under challenged is the feeling I get with newer games. But I can still jump in front of old school games and kill it, and I'm mid 30s. Like riding a bike.

Yep, I think you said it pretty perfectly. As I started to get more into retro games my wife would keep asking me are you sure you don't want Switch/XBox/PS/modern streaming alternative? My answer every time is nope! There's just so much retro goodness and so many games I missed back in the day and with all of the issues you mentioned I have no temptation to move into the newer systems. It's not for me.

In modern gaming, I seem to prefer simulation games. It's been widely noted that modern games try to be as realistic as possible. So then look, just give me the damn simulation and take your lazy half-assed game design ideas elsewhere. Now, I think I'll go play Subnautica while I wait for MS Flight Simulator to download and Gran Turismo 7 to be released. That's sea, land, and air. Bases are covered!

100% agree. The only new games I play nowadays are the ones that deliberately mimic retro games. Kemco produces some pretty good jrpgs & there are plenty of relatively recent home brew games for 8 bit consoles like the NES & GB.

I just turned 30 and my first console was the Sega mega drive so I grew up with retro classics, and I do feel that mainstream modern games have seen significant declines in quality in many ways. I definitely agree with the decline in difficulty, they seemed to get easier and easier with each generation. Even Sega mega drive games were significantly easier than NES games. Also, I think a lot of the new graphics have a "cheaper" look to them, somehow. A good example of this (in my opinion) is Abe's Oddysee for the PS1 vs New and Tasty. I think the combination of sprites and hand-drawn backgrounds in the original look way superior to the new and tasty graphics, it's like more effort was required from developers because the technology wasn't as advanced. That being said, though, when I turned about 18 and the PS3 came out and I had my first taste of Call of Duty online multiplayer, I was totally blown away and hooked in a way that I had never experienced up until that point. Games that good are worth waiting for. And when Battlefield 3 came out, man, games like that just provide a level of entertainment that retro games just cannot match. But the same is true for retro games, but in different ways. I also agree with the long introduction point you made; my brother got me Metal Gear Solid 5 Phantom Pain one Christmas, and that first mission sneaking out of the hospital, I found it quite tedious and didn't feel like I was playing MGS for about an hour. And I also hate how so many modern games are like movies; I don't even want to give some of the new PS5/Series X games a chance because of their movie-like presentation.

My biggest problem with modern gaming is some games have extra content that are only available through a download code instead of being on the disc when there is clearly still enough space. Great video by the way however I respectfully disagree about games feeling they take forever to release after they are first revealed. Nintendo is notorious for delaying games and consoles and not having enough supply to keep up demand for years.
@RetroBirdGaming
@RetroBirdGaming 3 жыл бұрын
Oh, leaving content off the disc when there's still space for it is definitely annoying! I'm not following your second point though. Wouldn't games being delayed make it feel like they take longer to come out?

My step-dad worked a ton for a decade and a half and missed the ps3 and ps4 generations. For his retirement present I got him all setup with a ps4, he was so excited to see how great video games must be now all this time later. He played a handful of games over a month or so, and never played the ps4 again. He said the games nowdays are too complicated and take too long to finish to be fun anymore. I'm relatively young and I agree with him, I don't really enjoy +95% of modern games anymore either

Yeah same for me. If I play Tomb Raider on PS4... I'll beat it the 1 time and never play it ever again. Retro games from nes, Genesis, Snes etc I'll play them over and over the games I really like...Golden Axe would be 1 of them..The sonics 1-3..Mario 1-3....Contra....Punchout etc.

the reason why i hate: you buy cd 1.0 vesion, then you get patch 1.xx version, and after they shoot down store/console support, you are on original 1.0 version, which in this times mostly means unplayable or glithy games

The problem for is mostly around AAA games. Use a game engine that is already established, use Earthlike environments as your skins and maps, put a generic guy in a army suit or a T-shirt and give him some big guns to blow something up. Sequel, just add a few more maps and weapons. Racing games - Cops and robbers Gran Turismo with shinier graphics. Does anyone ever think what a AAA Space Harrier game would like today on PS5? Does anyone think what a AAA Pilotwings could look like or play like? Where is the imagination gone? Lastly, I hate games where controlling the camera is part of the skill of the game. Example, I prefer God of War on PS2 compared to God of War PS4. On PS4 there are so few enemies because if you had 20 of them fighting you would be dead by being attacked from behind. Imagine playing Street Fighter 2 but the camera kept going all over the place. Sometimes simple is better. Personally I hate dual analog controllers and have a hard time with them. Even on the easiest settings I struggle so I would rather play a game with intuitive controls my brain can relate to. The games that have come out since PS2-PS5 generations are just remixing the same engines and maps. I enjoyed Gran Turismo on PS1 because it was exciting and new, but if a GT game came out today I wouldn't give it a second glance. The game that Polyphony made before GT was Motortoon Grand Prix 2 on the PS1. Its one of my favourite PS1 games (its not well regarded compared to Mariokart, but still its one of the most ambitious games on PS1). Thank God for Nintendo.

Even the music in new games is so oddly complex, you basically remember any tune from any old game , but even after playing a PS4 game for 4 hours straight, you cant tell how the music of that map goes which you just spend your afternoon on

Ironically, the thing I love about retro gaming is they offer a 'refreshing' alternative gameworld / gameplay experience that you don't often see in modern day games. For us older gamers its also an opportunity to revisit some of our old favorites we played when we didn't have grey hair.
