I rented this the week that Tiny Tim died. It's weird how you link memories, but I vividly remember enjoying the game for all of an hour before getting frustrated. I shut it off, turned on the news, and they announced Tiny Tim's death. I also remember eating Kenny Rogers Roasters, and getting sick from it, and this was the game I was allowed to rent over my sick days.

The worst thing about this game is the utter lack of direction, how you never know what it is you're supposed to be doing. It's really annoying how areas seem to arbitrarily change. When you thought you had explored them fully, go back and there's now an extra item in there, joy. And even if you do know what it is you're supposed to be doing, the puzzles are way too insane to figure out normally anyway. If objects on screen actually had a separate object for 'screw' for example, then it would be a lot easier to work out that you need to use the screwdriver on it. Either that, or have some casual mention of it being screwed on it in the item description, but no. Plus items don't get consumed after use, so it's even more annoying to know what needs to be used next. So much junk ends up being stuck in your inventory. And it's really not helped out by the fact that bugs exist in the game, causing certain items to effectively be skippable anyway. Poor game, the sequel is miles better.

They're usually called graphic adventures. On the PS1, the Broken Sword games are pretty similar. There is also a couple more Discworld games. On the PC there are a lot of excellent ones - just look up anything that Sierra or LucasArts did in the 90s. There's a program called ScummVM that runs them all perfectly. If you want some really excellent games to start off with, I'd suggest Gabriel Knight, King's Quest VI, and Full Throttle.
