The story goes he called up the studio at like 3am and asked to come record this song. Did it in one take. Man was an incredible talent.

I will never forget hearing that IZ passed away. Our family moved to Oahu when my husband was stationed at Pearl Harbor for shore duty in 1996. I fell in love with the island, the culture, the food, and especially the music. The day he passed, virtually the entire population on Oahu drove with their headlights on in tribute. His voice was amazing. His last name threw me for a loop in the beginning. Since the Hawaiian alphabet is only 12 letters, the pronunciation is a bit tricky. If there are “w’s” in the middle of the word, they are pronounced as “v’s” so it would sound like “Kamaka-vivo-ole” (like the Spanish word Ole). That’s about the closest I can get, not being a native Hawaiian speaker. All I can say, is I left a piece of my heart on that island and I hope to go back some day. With that, I bid you Aloha, from a temporary Kama’aina.

We were in Hawaii from 1999-2002 and I worked on the Waianae Coast. My coworkers were still impacted by the loss of Iz. My daughter sang this at a middle school talent show and took 3rd place. It’s very special to us. 🥰

Old fart here...When Iz passed, he laid in state at the state's capital and many thousands came to say good-bye. He was only the third person to be laid in state, the other 2 were politicians. His "funeral" was attended by over 10,000 people, the second highest attendance after the last king of Hawai'i. The governor was there. He cried.

IZ's music (specifically this song) has been featured in many movies. (50 First Dates with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore is the most known movie) He comes from a well known and loved musical family. IZ was a gentle giant. Loved by the whole state of Hawaii. His death was a major loss for the whole island. He has brought much attention from the world to the Hawaiian culture. This one song was so loved and sought after in the music industry, that it helped take care of his family after he was gone. He was a loving husband and father. He did not get to see how much his music would impact the world. PS. I guess he does resemble Maui from the movie Moana. But no connection. Here is the pronunciation of his last name Kah mah kah VEE VAH oh Lay Thank you so much for your awesome reaction. You are too cool!!! Loved it! MUCH ALOHA :)

Besides Judy Garland did this song, IZ brought warmth and peace in this classic. Every time, I hear IZ sings this classic, I get very emotional! People in Hawaii knows IZ. Now, world will know him too through KZbin! Someone mentioned IZ cover Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" Right now, Earth needs healing and peace after war going in Ukraine. People there needs peace! Then people in Russia need to remove a madman there as their leader! I didn't mean to be political here when talking about IZ.

A big man gifted with a beautiful voice. This "Over The Rainbow" was played at the end of the Adam Sandler movie "50 First Dates" and was so fitting as the movie was filmed in Hawaii and about two people who lived and worked in Hawaii, met, and fell in love. It is a funny movie but a bit bittersweet. Also starred Drew Barrymore as Lucy, who had short termed memory due to a car accident. But I have heard IZ's songs played in several movies. And you can refer to him as "Bruddah IZ", as everyone affectionately called him. He will be missed. 💙🌺

Yes braddah Iz passed long ago. If you think his voice is beautiful, his soul was even 10x more beautiful. His gentle soul was full of life. Braddah Iz was a humble man who always had jokes and would crack up everybody. He started off in a group called Makaha sons of Ni'ihau. And decided to go solo later on. This was a huge loss for the people of Hawaii, Huge. Much Aloha from the islands of Hawaii!

IZ is an inspiration and was loved by all. I was at Makua when they spread his ashes from the Hokule'a. Cars stopped along the 2 lane road leading to Ka'ena bringing traffic to a stand-still. Hundreds of people were wading in the water and hundreds more were on land. A procession of big rigs blew and held their horns echoing through the valley while his ashes were placed into the ocean making it sound as if the State of Hawaii was crying . . . it's a moment I will never forget. An incredible celebration of life for an incredible man!!
