They may not have paid Nicki Minaj, though she probably gets royalties on sales. She was the musical guest on the Saturday Night Live episode when this first aired. I’m not sure you completely get that. All (or nearly all) of the videos on KZbin for Lonely Island with well-known artists were originally digital shorts that aired during SNL episodes.
