Disgaea Hour of Darkness: Item World Basics

A totally optional video wherein I explain the basics of the item world!
Note: When I talked about how many specialists can be in an item due to population, I was wrong. Usually an item will have a starter population and can always be increased by killing the Item King/God. It's for this reason that Legendary Items are the only ones that can have the cap of 16. Common's usually have a range of 4-7 slots, Rare's will have 7-10, and Legendaries will have 10-13, but even these numbers aren't guarantees. It's all about that RNG baby.

I love this item world. Sure it a hell with in a hell, but it makes it so much more rewarding when you achieve your goal. Be it leveling your weapon, collecting specialties, level grinding characters, or faces the bosses of the item.

Very good video, I learned a lot. But I would like to add that you do NOT need to mess with Innocents to beat all of the secret levels/bosses. They are incredibly helpful, just not required. I sunk hundreds of hours into the game when it first came out and couldn't figure out how innocents worked so I just had to do it the hard way :)

It can also help to have a character with the Hyperdrive Item as it allows you to teleport anywhere on the map. This is an endgame item that comes from an Item God 2. Yes it does mean you have to go through really high level/rarity items buts its so worth it for the TPing.

I know the original disgaea doesn't show item ranks (unless you are playing afternoon of darkness) but if you clear all 100 floors on a rank 40 item without escaping, you will get a hyperdrive. It also helps to have a few thieves with you in the item world.

Searched for a while for a tutorial on Item World, this is only one i've found that explains anything. +1 thumbs from me brother. Few Questions: I just started, and i'm doing mostly story mode. I'm stuck on that hog guy you're meant to steal from. I've decided to farm item world for XP and Gear. If i go into the Item World, and i decide to go more than 10 floors, will the enemies become significantly harder after 10? My characters range from level 5-10, should i bother leveling items and looking for specialists, or just trying to get XP, because the next tier of item is stronger than a leveled item. (much like leveling a common sword or just finding a Long Sword)

Douxo I wouldn't say they get SIGNIFICANTLY harder, but they will continue to ramp up in difficulty. I forgot to mention this in the video, but the strength of the enemies is determined by the items rank, or how good the item is. The enemies levels will go up as you go down, but how fast they gain levels is determined by the items rank as well. For example, in a rank 1 item where the enemies are level 1 or so on the 1st floor, they won't gain levels very fast, and the level 10 item general would probably only be level 8 or so. After that it'll start to curve upwards in how quickly they gain levels, but it won't be too noticeable. But if you were to go into a higher level item, such as one with level 50 enemies at the start, you'll notice their levels fluctuate quite a lot, and going down a couple floors gets to be pretty dangerous, since how quickly the enemies go up in strength is determined by the items rank, which if you just google something like "Disgaea 1 Item Rank Chart" you'll see what I mean. If you want to just complete the story then you don't have to worry about the item world at all. So I'd focus on just getting XP and leveling up. Make sure you're also remembering to level up your weapon and item shops too! Better equipment makes a really big difference! And for Hoggmeiser I'd recommend being between level 12-15 for that fight. I have a video showing that fight off if you want to see more strategies for that particular fight! Whew, sorry for the wall of text >_> Anywho, I hope that helps!

One thing you got wrong: Rare Items have 60 floors, not 50 Also I would slightly disagree with some stuff you said, before you go to the next floor, even if you can do it in one turn without hazard, you should always check the Geo-Prices and the Geo panels, and once you have a good thief also check the equipment of every ordinary enemy, because you want to hunt Legendary Items, and the Item world is the only place you will find them in big numbers.

I've heard about people going pure item world starting in like chapter 1 and getting really overpowered so they can zoom through the story really quickly. How would you go about doing that? What exactly would your priorities be and how would you effectively level grind?

+Ausar0 You don't unlock the item world until Chapter 3, but yes, some people do do that. If you'd like to try that, here's some tips: - Make a Level 300 Statistician as fast as you can. Statisticians increase your EXP gain, and a level 300 gives you 300% more exp for each thing you kill. That's effectively 4x the exp. - As you're leveling your army, be sure to increase your item rank as your levels go higher. The stronger a weapon is (Or in other words, the higher its "rank") the more powerful the monsters you'll fight. And of course, since you're going into the item world, those items will get stronger too, so it'll be doubly helpful. - Only go into items you'll be able to use. For example, if you use Laharl a lot and you have him using mostly Swords, then prioritize your level grinding in the item world in a Sword. That way once you've gone far enough into said sword, you can give it to Laharl for a massive stat boost. Levels are important, but getting the stat boosts off the item world level gains can reap more benefits early on. - Kill the specialists as you go, and be sure to move them to items you plan on using. For example, Gladiators increase your Strength, so if you happen to go in an items with Gladiators, make it a priority to kill those so you'll gain the extra stats. It'll make you stronger faster, thus allowing you to level quite a bit easier. Hopefully those help! And more importantly, made sense :P If you need anything else, let me know!

Truthfully if you have the hyper drive and a character who knows every magic spell there is essentially no floor you can't clear. Also, when you create a cluster of specialists that cluster has a maximum effectiveness where it stops having an effect but you can bypass that with more clusters on the same item. Not only that but you can blow up an items base stats by placing subdued specialists on an un-leveled item and then leveling the item. You also should've talked about the affects and benefits of the various specialists and you didn't mention the Yoshitsuna, the most powerful weapon the game and that you can make more powerful ones, same with the super robo suit.

Cesariono The game has the absolute bare minimum as a tutorial, which you can read through the item worlders menu, but it's largely unhelpful. Most of what I learned was through experimentation and online guides. The later games do a much better job at explaining things, especially 5 which streamlines it in a good way imo. Part of the fun of this series to me is experimenting and finding ways to become more powerful so I don't mind the lack of explanations, but that's probably what turns people off from the game or intimidates them.

Otakugamer93 Sorry I'm getting to this so late. If you haven't figured everything out yet, here's a quick and dirty guide of how the item world works: Go inside the item you want to make stronger. Get to floor 10. Kill the Item General there (He's usually in the middle part of the map and you can press X on each enemy until you see one with that title), if possible kill all the enemies to get a Mr. Gency exit. Go back to your castle and boom. You now have a much stronger item than before. Gladiators, Marksmen etc. are just innocents that boost certain stats. Like Gladiator for example will boost the attack stat of whatever item it's on. So if a sword has 50 attack, and you put a level 10 Gladiator on it, the sword will have 60 attack. Make sense? In order to get one you have to kill one in an item, and it'll appear on a random floor. Once you do, you can move it to any item you want to reap the benefits of it. You can move innocents to other items by talking to the item world lady. And that's the bare basics. Hopefully that made better sense in text form.

Otakugamer93 If you want Mana grinding to go faster, I would try to get Manager innocents. The level of the Manager gives you a percentage increase in Mana. For example, if you have a level 100 Manager, you get 2x the experience! Managers max out at 300, which means you'll get 4x the Mana! Very handy (and almost necessary) for transmigrating. And don't forget: The level of the enemy is what determines how much Mana you get. A level 100 enemy will give 100 Mana, for example. And yeah, part of why I wanted to make these videos is because the game doesn't tell you any of this stuff. I'm glad it helped though!

Vic Plaza When you select the item, you'll see a picture with the Innocent and their level. If their innocent name is blue, then it means you've subdued them. If it's black it means you still need to subdue them. A good reference point in this video for what I mean is at 14:54.

You're on a space that has damage to allies...and you may have the colour indicators off too but put the cursor on a space and it will show what effect is on it
