​@@ReconWafflezthat happened to me during 9.5 I was vs a capped vanquisher ionia comp (except 3-star 4 cost). It's around 6-3 or 6-5 and he's at 18 hp and I'm at 8 hp. All I did was change positioning and yeahp i smoked him with my lvl-9 3-star kayle carry with 5 demacia 6 slayer

Maybe because combining then selling a 2-star loses 1 gold in total. If you can't 3-star, maybe it is better not to combine. This does not apply to 1-cost units though.
