I had a similar problem a couple of years ago. Our laundry room is right above the layout and one day a wash was being done, the vibration of the washing machine caused the container of detergent to fall to the floor and split open. When discovered about a half gallon of detergent had leaked out. It found a crack in the floor that allowed the soap to leak down onto the layout. I was able to rinse off the scenery and get rid of the suds, but it will still foam if I do any more rinsing. Very nice layout, Will look forward to seeing the fix.

Sorry to hear about the bad luck Grant. The downside to being in the basement. I had a close call a couple years ago where a jug of liquid tide fell off the dryer on its side, busted the nozzle off and flooded the laundry room floor. It poured into a nearby vent and then down onto one of my reverse loops. Luckily, it was still under construction at that time and wasn't fully loaded with trains. Good on you for looking at the dishwasher incident as an opportunity to improve the scene. I look forward to see what you do with it! Have a great summer. -Ben

I was almost thinking “what damage?” Until you started poking the layout. Wouldn’t have been so bad if you didn’t have the track and clearance issues. Glad you have a plan to fix. I remember reading about a modeller who had a similar situation and because he paid attention and replicated the culverts and drainage that the prototype did, when the water leak happened, all the water drained through the layout’s culverts and onto the floor and then into the floor drain. I can’t help but think he had similar damage to his scenery. Take care Grant, see ya at the next Ops, whenever that happens.
@SouthernAlbertaRail Жыл бұрын
Thinking we might have to have an op session with a slow order before the track gets fixed Jon. Yah the first flood when the house still had Poly-B piping ended up landing in the lake and all the water ran under the bridges and off the edge of the layout. That seems like a lifetime ago... long before this layout was built. Cheers Pal!

Grant, Sorry to hear you had problems'. Great that you aren't distancing yourself from the problems' and heading into them with a plan. Saw you guest hosting on The Second Section Podcast. I feel as you do that there is way too much emphasis on the underbody details; most (99%) will not see them! I think if they focus (as you do and others') on the mechanism and the details that count the $ / unit will drop, thus, introducing more to well running models for the beginners in the hobby; increasing the retention factor. Take care.
@SouthernAlbertaRail Жыл бұрын
Can't fix a problem unless you confront it Colin as I'm sure you well know!! I appreciate your comments on the podcast and your takeaway from it. You've hit the nail on the head. Give people a reliable product first to mitigate the frustration factor. Most of us got into the hobby during a time when detail parts were a thing and you could dress up your locomotives to your hearts desire. The key being the base model was decent quality to begin and we didn't end up with shelf queens. Cheers. -grant

Very sorry to hear about your leaking dishwasher and the damage it caused on the layout. Nevertheless, I sincerely appreciate your stance on this situation, which you take as an opportunity for improvement, rather than a setback. Aren’t familiar with many North American dishwasher models, know more about European models. Have seen a lot of damage over the years especially from built-in models and inaccessible drain hoses. Don’t know if you have access to a drain for your dishwasher in the basement? As the main issue with dishwashers often is that they’re placed as low as possible for ergonomic reasons. This almost always entails for the drain hose to be connected up to a higher point in the drain under the sink. However, when the possibility exist to connect to a lower situated connection, then the hose will be emptied after every dishwashing circle. This will significantly increase the longevity of the flexible connection. Which in most cases remains filled with the organic waste and detergents, which can truly affect the consistency of those hoses. Cheerio
@SouthernAlbertaRail Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments Vincent. I try to treat setbacks as "do-overs". We don't necessarily learn from success but rather from failure. I appreciate your insight on the dishwasher drain hose. I hit the basement this morning after reading your comment... to plan on where to drop the drain hose through the floor and tie it into the main drain line!! Great idea that I'm sure not many think of. Cheers. -grant

You'd think builders would have figured out something to prevent something like that from happening. Ok honestly I was expecting more visible damage. But on the other side, who knows what lies beneath the scenery... 😐 Fortunately you use 3/4 plywood if my memory serves me well so this is sturdy. MDF likes to sucks water in, expands, and then it's done... Is the kink inside or outside the curve ? Can't really tell from the angle in the vid. Seems like the glue didn't survive the soak... Have a great summer and take care Grant 😊😉
