To think all the animated films I grew up with were made through this painstaking process stretching over hundreds of hours, makes me appreciate the Animators so much more.

The way you cycle through the pages with such rhythmic flow is beautiful.

Wonderful, thank you for the video! I'm not even an animator but I still draw characters so this is super useful.

Fantastic video! I’ve been an artist all my life, but only recently started studying animation, so this is immensely helpful!

I just rewatched The Secret of NIMH and couldn't help but note how wonderfully Jenner was animated as I read you were the lead animator of that character. You are a true master of your craft!

I wanna be an official animator one day, and I'm heavily inspired by Disney and old cartoons. Thanks for your work!!

I pretty much cut the in-between drawings to a 4 frame ( if you can image that ) interval as opposed to drawing every tick. It's chunky compared to smooth like a film or video ( not much filming today ) but you understand the idea. 😅

@stephanos61 Hi ! Your current problem is that you add so many inbetween drawings to make your animation not only fluid but interesting, the reason why is, by only using a couple of key drawings ( I guess, with some big differences in shape and spacing ) you lack structure within your animation. Maybe you can try another way to plan your shots : Let say 2 seconds, so 48 frames. First, like you use to do, you draw your 5-6 key poses, then, DON'T DRAW YOUR INBETWEENS YET! instead, shoot your key poses in order to have a basic understanding of your timing. Then, imagine you need to slow down when entering one of your pose, you know that you'll need some drawings closer to the final key pose. So, you can draw a special drawing : the breakdown which isn't a simple inbetween but a special pose in itself that connects your keys with an excentric action. From this point, you can add some regular inbetweens straight ahead because the complex Key poses and breakdowns will give you the limits you need within your 2 seconds shot. Maybe it's a bit confusing, but that's a safe way to keep your animation under control. Another advice is to storyboard your shot : If you know what you're supposed to do, then it will be easier to cancel the extra drawings that inflate your animation. Even in straight ahead animation you must keep the actions as simple as possible. Everything has to be done on purpose. Preston Blair's manual is an amazing starting point to build your skills as a classic animator. Have a good day.

Its crazy how it takes thousands of drawings to create a 30 minute cartoon episode to an hourlong animated movie.

Gawd, I remember having to learn this, I had to use a non photo blue pencil since my mass would be off....to be honest I still do..

the biggest hurdle for me when it comes to inbetween is wondering how many drawings I'll need to plan for, and understanding the timing charts. I time myself with 24fps in mind, so I KNOW i need roughly say 48 drawings for 2 seconds, but planning when and hwere my tweens are I think is my issue. I start with pose to pose or keys, usually these are 5-6 drawings and make my way to straight ahead for inbetweening, but I always notice I need more and more drawings to get the smoothness or timing Im looking for, and eventually either exceeding the original 48 drawings or just constantly going back and forth to fix timing issuss (easier to do with digital but stil I feel Im doing something wrong or not efficently.) it makes labeling the drawings hard too... I can't simply do pose to pose and labe l each key pose as 1, 4, 6, 7 and inbetween everything as I see professionals do, cus the timings never right when I do it that way, I eventually realize I need more drawings between Keys 1 and 4, despite labeling it as if I needed only two (so basically drawings 2 and 3 become 4 5 6 7 ect ect, which throws the count all off too). I still haven't found any animation tutorial that can explain it yet, so I'm basically asking if it's possible you can make a video on the subject someday? no rush.

The correct term for it is extremes and breakdowns, not in-between.
Your videos are great. I've learned a lot more quickly than with other channels. But "Breakfast Club" makes me cringe. Where I live in the world, it's no where near "breakfast" and I can watch these videos any time I want. Sorry. It just sounds last millennium, and, these days, kind of creepy. Other than that, I LOVE your videos.

Thanks for the feedback! Breakfast Club was originally for a different series I was doing on my website but we decided to put them on KZbin as well. We will be moving away from that as the channel continues but are using these videos to get started for now!
