From the web: As a cruise ship nears port, a small boat pulls up alongside. Often mistaken for a tug boat, the pilot boat (and pilot) perform essential functions in guiding enormous cruise ships into port. Cruise ships visit extremely popular destinations and share port waterways with a flotilla of small and large vessels. The job of a pilot is to board the cruise ship and assist the captain with navigation around the local harbour. Regardless of ocean conditions, the pilot will transfer from the small pilot vessel and ascend a ladder on the side of the cruise ship while the ship is still moving. This dangerous feat is not for the faint-hearted, and pilots are highly trained and fearless mariners.

Such much to love about this cruise; Halloween on the High Seas on the Wonder out of San Diego. We did all of these things in October 2018 and had the best time. Thanks for sharing your experience; it brought back so many great memories for us.

The beauty of the Wonder is that it’s build for long trips so storage is amazing! Never underestimate the mighty power of smaller ships 🤗 How fun to see the cruise a live. Huge difference from last year but same fun if not better I would say?

@@brianpettit8951 currently the Magic was known for her Trans Atlantic itinerary and in 2023 she will be doing Panama Canal and the Wonder is known for her Panama Canal/Hawaii itineraries but soon Trans Pacific to Polynesian island, Australia and New Zealand. Small and mighty! Not saying the bigger ships can’t do longer but they are so designed for short itinerary. All ships are amazing though.

@@AdventuresinMillerland I feel like the bigger the cruise the less real estate. Kinda what they do with economy seats on airplanes. The more seats the more money unless you’re willing to pay for real estate. The Magic and Wonder are true build for 90’s original DCL Luxury travel.

It makes sense because I imagine the number of potential cruisers would be lower on the long cruises due to money and time. BTW, American Airlines announced they are doing away with first class because they are not selling enough of them.

I haven't seen anyone commenting on the aircraft that you saw. It is the Bell Boeing V-w Osprey and it is an amazing aircraft! It features a tilt rotor for VTOL (Vertical Take of and Landing) and STOL (Short Takeoff and landing) capabilities. So it is a hybrid between a helicopter and an aircraft! Love your videos Miller family! Keep it up!

I don’t think we passed by the sub base unfortunately. It’s on the interior of Coronado and it’s not visible from the ship as you sail away, at least on our itinerary (we headed north to Catalina). You might see it on a Cabo sailing? Either way, you should get there a day or two early to go into Coronado to see if you can see it closer up, maybe from the course?

We did the 7 day Halloween on the High Seas from Oct 2 to Oct 9 and it was a first cruise for myself, Mom and Nephew; second cruise for my Sister and her Hubbs. We also had Dussel as our Head Server and he was awesome! Love your blogs!

The small boat was the pilot boat. They will bring on a local pilot to get them out or in certain areas. You should also see a pilot come onboard when you go into international waters. So fun to watch.

You definitely need to sail on the Wonder! The crew are amazing and the food is the best as well, in our experience. We recommend a 5-7 night out of SD to Mexico or an Alaska itinerary 👍

Yes - you can walk to the cruise terminal in San Diego from a number of hotels. We’ve walked to the cruise terminal from both Hampton Inn and Spring Hill Suites!

Embarkation day is always fun! That said, we’ve done more cruises in the past year than will be normal and we’re looking to going on new and different adventures in the coming year 😄 Normally, we’ll go on one cruise a year or so 👍

Here's some dining tips for your New Orleans holiday: Beignets and chicory au lait every morning only from Cafe du Monde at the French Market location. These are the best! Avoid all other Cafe du Monde locations. Get a whole muffuletta from Central Grocery. Keep in your hotel room fridge for snacking! Mother's on Poydras Stteet for lunch. I don't have a favourite po'boy sandwich shop. And try the fried chicken at Willie Mae's Scotch House. Be warned that service is very slow there but the fried chicken is delicious. For dinner, try the historic restaurants: Galatoire's, Commander's Palace, Arnaud's, Brennan's. I do not recommend the celebrity chef restaurants. Do your research and plan every meal. Nola is the best foodie town in the US!

I would like to stay at the Hampton to just be able to walk to the port but I can't justify spending $200+ when I can stay at Motel 6 by the airport for less than $100

It’s definitely a convenience to stay closer as we did at the Wyndham Bayside. But honestly the gas lamp district was loud, busy and the noise kept us up throughout the night. Next cruise out of SD will be a bit further out of the city within a quick Uber ride.

We use points from our credit card to stay at hotels. That said, the convenience is super worth it. But bring ear plugs! The train is kind of loud.

When they go to the clubs, our oldest usually goes to vibe (14-17) and our youngest goes to edge (11-14). They didn’t really go to the clubs on this cruise though.
