It's called a departure time definition it's time the plane should leave airport on for people to board the plane. Boarding time is 1hr to 10mins before departure time

Planes usually leave at departure time regardless of the amount of people missing, and sometimes they even over sell the plane in case people do miss it which is why my family usually gets to the airport 3 or so hours before departure time and it's usually just enough time so we don't have to rush

That's why you should always arrive earlier before your boarding time. They're not gonna hold the plane for just you guys, unless you rented out the whole plane. There are others in that plane that were on time, and shouldn't suffer because of your tardiness...

+Stephanie Bianca Bryan said they arrived at the gate at 8am, which was exactly their departure time. Planes closes their gates atleast 15 minutes BEFORE departure time, and if you weren't at the gate before they close it, they have the right to leave without you. I've flown American a couple of times already, and it's not just American Airlines that do this. When you book your flights, it's stated in the terms and conditions that you must be at the gates few minutes before the departure time because they close the gates earlier. This is basic knowledge if you travel by plane frequently.
