I would have placed the lion king remake at the bottom. Like Aladdin , I never thought it should have been made, at least Aladdin had something redeeming about it. These live actions rely on your nostalgia for the original and rip of the idea and I just dont want to stand by that because those films inventet an entire genre and style of film that played an important part in many peoples lives.The idea of the remaking it and proffiting off what those original 10 animators worked so hard to create just feels stingy and dirty to me.

I watched the live-action Cinderella for the first time recently, and I absolutely loved it! I appreciate how it wasn't a beat for beat retelling of the original, apart from having the same general story. The added narrative elements make total sense, I love the themes is focuses on, and overall it's just beautifully made. It also has a surprising message by the end: be kind and forgiving to those who aren't kind to you, but don't let others take advantage of that kindness. Understanding why someone is the way they are doesn't justify how they treat you, and you have to draw the line at a certain point. This isn't something I see emphasized in these kinds of stories very often, and it shows that you deserve to be happy no matter what someone says. Made me reconsider my opinion on Disney remakes in general, and that maybe I should give more of them a chance.

No additional worldbuilding, no new concepts explored, no extra characters, more or less a retelling of the first film but with a dragon now for some reason... It's a reboot. Remember that this was Disney's experimentation for their live action remake format, back when they were trying not to be too obvious about the nostalgia bait, before they just went full "Hey remember this from your childhood? That'll be $15 please!" If anything, it's a reboot disguised as a sequel but make no mistake, this movie was NOT made because they had just so many creative ideas for a continuation of the Alice Saga.

The only remakes I like (at least for what I already saw) are "Cinderella" and "Jungle Book (2016)," since they did a solid job at being their own thing while also maintaining key elements from their respective source materials. I loved the "101 Dalmatians" remake back when I was a kid, along with the animated film and spinoff TV series, but I haven't seen much of it recently so I can't give my full thoughts on it. Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" had gorgeous visuals and some entertaining moments with the Red Queen. Otherwise, this version felt boring with some dull acting and for making it a prophecy/war story, which doesn't work for something that's supposed to be a surreal fantasy. "Maleficent" gets major props for Angelina Jolie's performance, some awesome creature designs, and trying to flip around the heroes and villains' respective roles (at least the idea for it). But between the unlikable portrayal of the three good fairies, making Prince Phillip superfluous, and turning the king into a vindictive tyrant, this film fell apart for me in the end. "Beauty and the Beast" is the worst one for me so far, since it's basically the original film with some extra details, but lacking the heart and charm of its predecessor. Not necessarily bad, but still mostly hollow. But on the bright side, I like how they added some moments with Belle and Beast reading together, Gaston and LeFou were fairly enjoyable, some of the new songs were soothing, and the extra details on the curse (servants becoming more like actual objects, pieces of the castle falling apart) genuinely elevated its threat to the characters. While I've only seen the first hour or so of "Aladdin," I found it mediocre. The only saving graces were Will Smith as the Genie and some of the new renditions of the classic songs. I know this wasn't on the list, but I also saw the remake for "Pete's Dragon," which was okay like the original. It was mostly generic in its storytelling, although Pete was more interesting than his original counterpart and the Elliot the dragon as was delightful as his cartoon iteration.

Opinion respected on Cinderella and Jungle Book. Cinderella was a bad remake though it only had two right things but it still lacked charm to the original and it’s no musical! Oh the indignity! Jungle book, by far, is the worst remake I saw cause it was very too dark for kids and I’m so scared of snakes and worse it’s not the same mood and charm as the 1967 film! Beauty and the beast remake was better and I’m getting tired of seeing get a lot of hates by people! At least it did it’s own way with a lot of differences such as fixing these stupid plot holes I don’t like and made the male villagers and Lumiere in their correct costume unlike the incorrect costumes from other time periods that made me upset. It’s the reason why I got into watching Washington’s Spies. The costume Lumiere wore in the 1991 was wrong and bad as the 2017 version was better even though I still prefer the red hair on Lumiere at least.

Alice Through the Looking Glass (visually marvelous, but went off the rails with the time travel and expanded backstories for characters I didn't need to learn about) 14. 102 Dalmatians (Glenn Close is great, but an unnecessary, stupid sequel which didn't need to exist) 13. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (more entertaining than the first, but thought the narratives were still a mess and still don't like Maleficent's character portrayal) 12. The Sorcerer's Apprentice (so much potential in its wing, but wasted through muddled storytelling and a waste of Cage's hamminess) 11. The Jungle Book 1994 (feels more like a poor man's Indiana Jones knockoff than a Jungle Book adaptation) 10. Alice in Woderland (good visuals and a solid cast, but narrative felt cheapened due to overuse of fanasy clichés over the madness of Wonderland) 9. The Lion King (visually stunning but emotionally hollow remake due to playing it incredibly safe) 8. Dumbo (enjoy Burton's ambitious direction throughout and hit me in the feels, though some aspects in the third act went a little off the rails) 7. 101 Dalmatians (enjoyable adaptation throughout even if the slapstick went a little too far) 6. Lady and the Tramp (a surprisingly good remake which is just as heartfelt as the original classic) 5. Beauty and the Beast (a respectful adaptation that's stunning to watch) 4. Aladdin (loved the Bollywood influences and Will Smith's Genie) 3. The Jungle Book 2016 (great job mixing the heart of the animated classic with the darker themes of the source material and more emotionally satisfying than Lion King) 2. Christopher Robin (wonderful continuation of Pooh that captured the charm of the original stories) 1. Cinderella (best example of respecting the animated counterpart while improving its weakest aspects to make an even stronger narrative)

I love Alice Through the Looking Glass! It's more fun than many of the other live-action Disney movies and Mia Wasikowska actually manages to be smiley and chipper unlike in the first movie (I don't care much for the first one as it's downright ghoulish). And contrary to what many others think, I really like the stolen tart plotline being the catalyst for the Red Queen's descent into villainy; unresolved issues in our childhoods can profoundly affect who we become as adults, no matter how small they may seem and considering this is Wonderland we're talking about, it makes perfect sense that the cause of the Red Queen's treachery is something so trivial.

The thing i loved about Aladdin that they added in the remake was how Jafar pick-pocketed the lamp from Aladdin. They played up Aladdin's pick-pocket skills in the movie and had that scene where Jafar tells Aladdin "I used to be like you." it really builds up to when Aladdin has a fight with Genie about his third wish and it shows how far Aladdin has fallen to hubris that he didn't even notice that he got the lamp pick-pocketed from him! it was a solid change imo, and much better than iago dressing up like a flamingo and just taking the lamp from Aladdin's bedroom. I would have to put Christopher Robin at number one, Beauty and the Beast is a close 2nd. I never really liked the animation movie but when I saw that movie I fell in love with it. Going back to CR, ive always loved Winnie the pooh so watching this movie just pulled at the heart strong. Espeically Pooh still being very childlike

I’ve never seen the newer Lady & The Trail that was Disney+ exclusive. Still, I’ll do my ranking, as follows, even if I like a lot of these. Anyway, as if I saw the newer Lady & The Tramp, here it is: 16. 102 Dalmatians 15. Lady & The Tramp (newer one) 14. Alice In Wonderland 13. Alice Through The Looking Glass 12. Sorceror’s Apprentice 11. Maleficent 10. Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil 9. 101 Dalmatians 8. Jungle Book (2016) 7. Jungle Book (1994) 6. Christopher Robin 5. Dumbo 4. Cinderella 3. Aladdin 2. Beauty & The Beast 1. The Lion King Yes, I’m aware that Lion didn’t offer much new stuff. Still,’some of the dialogue was changed, certain scenes were expanded upon, there was a little bit of a newer side to some of the characters, and I liked how the hyenas has a bigger role. Oh, and this could be biased on my part, but I liked how Mufasa seemed to have the Godly kind of love by loving others, such as Simba, unconditionally. Anyway, great job once again!

My list (worst to best) would probably be: 102 dalmations (I kind of forgot this excisted... 😅) The sorceres aprentice The djungel book (I really did like it and might even watch it again, but like you said it felt like it was jumping between genres and therefor it was hard to tell what kind of story they were telling) Beauty and the Beast (I like it a lot it has some great songs, it is well made and the added scenes flow right in. I just don't think I'm the biggest fan of the story wether in this version or any other version I've seen/read. But I do think the added moments makes me like this version a little more) Alice in Wonderland (I really like it but I see it as a sequel not a remake. She's grown up and like a lot of people she's lost a lot of that childlike apreciation which she's trying to get back) 101 dalmations (I don't think it's better in quality but I grew up watching this movie and I love Glenn Close's preformance) Alice through the looking glass (I liked this one more because it was more clear in trying to be a continuation to the story than the first one was) Maleficent (It does departure from the original movie a bit but the original movie is also just one version of the original story so I have no problem with that. I think it is a bit long but I think this movie did a better job a portraying the characters than the first Sleeping beauty movie. Although I'm not sure if it's a better movie over all, but I definetly enjoyed watching it) Cinderellla (I don't know the original Cinderella always seemed a bit lacking to me compared to the story it is based on. And I think this movie fixed that. It is a gorgeous movie and I really enjoyed watching it) The rest I have not watched

I genuinely like the remakes. If I liked the original, I usually like the remakes. The remakes usually add some background and a bit more information to the caracters.

The Lion King gets way more hate than it deserves. Yes, Disney decided to follow the story line very closely, but it managed to make it feel so much different and resparked the magic that the first one brought

Never once used the word “hate” in any of my reviews. Also, it’s perfectly reasonable to dislike something for being “too different,” while at the same time respecting the artistic decision to make it that way. That’s what film appreciation is all about - clear and balanced thoughts.

I wanna do a list too! (I haven't seen Maleficent 2 or Alice 2) 1. The Jungle Book (2016) 2. 102 Dalmatians 3. 101 Dalmatians 4. Maleficent 5. Alice in Wonderland 6. The Sorcerer's Apprentice 7. Dumbo 8. Cinderella 9. The Jungle Book (1994) 10. Lady and the Tramp 11. Christopher Robin 12. Beauty and the Beast 13. Aladdin 14. The Lion King I think the Lion King is a completely valueless movie that only takes away from the original. Same with half this list.

@chadpeterson56984 жыл бұрын
Here's my order ( sequels and spinoffs won't count) 1. Jungle Book ( improved characters, better story, superior voice acting) 2. Beauty and the Beast ( Luke Evans and Josh Gad killed their roles and I actually liked Emma Watson as Belle since she fits the role perfectly in real life) 3. Cinderella ( Cate Blanchett can do no wrong) 4. 101 Dalmatians ( Glenn Close was amazing as Cruella) 5. Lion King ( Be Prepared was botched and Scar wasn't voiced by either Jeremy Irons, Benedict Cumberbatch, or Idris Elba) 6. Aladdin ( because Jafar's actor did a horrible job with the character's voice) 7. Lady and the Tramp ( no Siamese cats) 8. Dumbo ( I don't think that this remake is that memorable in fact I almost forgot that it existed)

I agree with Scar being voiced by Jeremy Irons and Benedict Cumberbatch but not Idris Elba, he would voice Mufasa.

All right. So here’s my take on the live actions as a whole (not a ranking, and in my time, we not have The Lady and The Tramp remake): So... honest here ok? The first ones I watched were Jungle Book (2016) and Pete’s Dragon. I was lucky, of course, that those two were some of the best ones. Of course, later, I discovered the less... well-done ones. I honestly think as a whole, none of them are going to be on my ‘favourite films’ list. None of them are too memorable in any way, and I don’t ever feel the urge to rewatch any of them FOR MY VIEWING PLEASURE. I will rewatch, say, the Lion King to admire the CGI. Or Aladdin to laugh about Blue Genie Smith. But never for the story. Some of the remakes were just... no, like Alice Through the Looking Glass, or 102 Dalmatians. Others were... eh, like Maleficent (both of them have good ideas, and bad executions), or Christopher Robin (which has amazing emotions, and terrible pacing). Others were quite enjoyable, like Aladdin (funny, and engaging), or Beauty and the Beast (VISUALS!). There really is only one that I would, if I had kids, show my kids BEFORE SHOWING the original animated one - Cinderella. The only one, in my opinion, where good ideas, good execution of said ideas, professional camera work, amazing visuals, great themes, and great performances all collide. I wanted, in particular, to talk about Maleficent2. Elle Fanning: fantastic performance. Michelle Pfeifer: fantastic performance. Angelina Jolie: fantastic performance. Plot ideas about two matriarchs with opposing ideals and old biases coming head to head in a gigantic war: fantastic idea. Said war has a bunch of casualties that nobody cares about at the end: terrible. Maleficent being sidelined in her own film: not good. Visuals: just so much wow here. Characters not doing anything when they really should be doing something: overused trope. Overall: SO FRUSTRATING.

After all of that, I realized you also live in Lady and the Tramp era, but didn’t count Pete’s Dragon haha. Pete’s Dragon is only a very loose adaptation, so I understand, but I personally do count it.
@DaveLeeDownUnder4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for all your thoughts and all your effort here. As I mentioned at the beginning of the video - Pete's Dragon is a live action film with some animation. That would fit into a completely seperate video, alongside remakes and re-imaginings such as Mary Poppins Returns, Flubber, Parent Trap, Freaky Friday, Race to Witch Mountain, Herbie, Shaggy Dog, Witch Mountain etc. This video specifically focuses on remakes of whoelly animated films.

No problem. I really do think that The Lion King isn’t really a live-action film though, as it is, I believe, 100% animation, right?

On a personal stand point, I would place 101 Dalmatians before both Alices, Jungle Books, Maleficents, & Dumbo. But then again, I would watch the heck out of the OG cartoon movie when I was little and got super excited for the remake. But I do agree, 102 deserved to be on the bottom.

Haven’t seen many of these, but I really like Christopher Robin. Didn’t like Beauty and the Beast, though, especially the Beast’s character. In the original, he is uncouth and has a temper, but in the new one, he comes across as a condescending snob who thinks he’s better than everyone instead. Also wasn’t a fan of how he looked, either.
@chadpeterson56984 жыл бұрын
In the remake of Beauty and the Beast Gaston and LeFou were improved since the latter has a better personality and the former has more of a backstory but is also even more evil. Also while Emma Watson wasn't the best at singing she was the perfect choice as Belle otherwise.

I don’t mind both the 1994 and 2016 live action versions of Reitherman’s Jungle Book. Both show Shere Khan killing Mowgli’s human dad. How surprising is that? I think that’s a damn coincidence!

My favorite was The Jungle Book (2016), the fact that everything is CGI and the kid Mowgli was able to act brilliantly with nothing earns major respect from me and unlike The Lion King remake I could see the emotion on the animals faces which is why I wouldn't of put it so high on my own list

I don't get why they go through all the trouble to do some of the more shot for shot remakes. There was no way in hell I was going to go to most of these in theaters, but I can't think of any animated Disney Classic that I wouldn't want to go to see in a theater. I only bothered to see two of these in theaters (Christopher Robin and Cinderella) and was glad I did. I watched most of the rest at home, and was glad I didn't bother going to the theater to see them. When I lived in LA I loved how El Capitan showed classic Disney movies when they were re-released on DVD. That always felt far more magical than most of the remakes. I would think that would make a lot of money without costing hardly anything.

I have quite the different impression of most of the movies here. I personally felt actually quite intruiged with Burton's version of Alice in Wonderland. In comparisson, the animated version only partly entertained me whenever I watched it. As for Aladdin, I love the original to bits, probably my personal favorite Disney movie. I watched the live-action version and to me, it worked great. I applauded Will Smith's unique take of the genie and found it nice how him and other characters received some deeper characterization. Compared to such, the Lion King just completely rubs me as an extremely inferior version. Cinderella, Christopher Robin and Malificent all were very nice additions and reimiagenings of the stories in different viewpoints and directions.

Aladdin and Cinderella are the best. The lion king is the more awful and hideous. 1994 version is a jewel of animation. 2019 is the opposite.

The second Alice movie isn't really a remake, but a sequel of a remake so I wouldn't include it to the list. Same thing with Maleficent sequel even though the first movie isn't really a true remake of the original as it follows the story from Maleficent's point of view and alters it quite a lot.

I don't mind live actions....There are some shining stars, most are kinda average and there are a couple of terrible ones....My issue is when they make movies for zero reason but a cash grab....For example, The Lion King....There was no point to it. People generally have negative things to say about movies like Malificent and Alice In Wonderland, and I'm not the biggest fan either, but at least they tried SOMETHING.

Won’t get any disagreements from me about Cinderella. It is different, but it honors the source material. And that’s what a good remake needs to balance on. If they can’t do that, why bother trying? Cinderella does that almost perfectly.

I’ve only seen The Lion King, Aladdin, and parts of Beauty and the Beast. The Lion King is easily the worst of the lot. In this case, not changing anything did not save this remake in any way. If they added any thing, anything at all, it would have made it even mildly interesting. This is nothing more than a dead copy of the original. Apparently, the intention was to make it like a documentary. Well, if i wanted to watch a documentary, I would open an actual documentary. The vibrant, energetic Lion King would not be my first choice. Besides, last I checked, documentaries did not have talking, singing animals. I can see some passion being put into Aladdin, or Beauty and the Beast, but every single thing bout the Lion King remake screams cash grab. The voice actors sounded bored out of their minds, and even James Earl Jones seems to be saying, “why am I doing this again?” I still don’t understand how you can possibly make one of Disney’s most iconic and memorable villains into a such a boring, forgettable character. Sorry for the rant, but I don’t understand how someone could possibly ruin the Lion King. How can you make such an iconic masterpiece into a forgettable piece of trash.
@BalletGal20104 жыл бұрын
From the remakes that I've seen and can remember well Lion King and Aladdin r my least favorites. Its not that they're bad cause I think when it comes to most of the recent remakes they're all good in they're own way. The thing that annoys me about these 2 movies is the iconic villain song being cut/shortened. Aladdin cut Jafars song all together for what I felt like was this feminist power ballad that I really didn't care much for. Speechless just feels forced and I really think prince Ali reprise would've been better. The lion king shortened be prepared and thats just not ok that song is so iconic and it deserved to be in the film in its entirety.

Here are the top 10 things wrong with the Aladdin and Lion King remakes 1. Jafar's actor 2. Be Prepared was botched 3. Scar isn't voiced by either Jeremy Irons, Benedict Cumberbatch, or Idris Elba 4. No Cobra scene 5. No Prince Ali Reprise 6. Iago wasn't memorable 7. The Sultan isn't the goofy lovable character that he was in the original 8. The Hyenas aren't as memorable or even as likeable as characters 9. No emotion in the acting 10. Both stories were just straight up cheap knock offs
