They have hired TCG veterans to produce this game. They’ve also stated that the game will be competitive, but not on the realm of mtg. I think they will have to add a huge collectibility aspect to it ie full and alt arts etc. for them to be really successful long term. Disney is all about art and this would fit perfectly here

I recommend you research Villainous a bit more. Card play, layered mechanics, various levels of complexity, asynchronous characters. While not TCG it certainly demonstrates the ability to deliver some of the components you would look for.

First red flag of the video-you didn't know who Ravensburger was. They are a massive board game company outside of puzzles, producing of mixture of massively successful board games, with Castles of Burgundy being one of the biggest contemporary hits, as well as the Villainous series. Not every game they have produced has been a hit, but that's the case with every company.

While some points are valid, and we don't know the gameplay yet (and initially we might not have enough product printed), other points are very shallow or poorly researched. Ravensburger is a massive company with 600+ million in revenue in 2021 which has enough resources to create whatever it wants. Villainous is a super big, complex, successful, high-quality game. The organized play announced and will have a big focus at the start. The team has top-tier names, like Ryan Miller (who worked for WotC and created systems for Digimon and other well-known TCGs). And while game might be simple, complexity and mechanics come from the cards.

Your first point threw me off. Gamers are very familiar with Ravensburger. As you say, they’ve been around a long time. It’s NOT a red flag. It’s actually a GOOD thing Ravensburger is involved. 1. They are known. 2. They have Disney IP products already 3. They have made a Disney card game already! Villainous. They have many games in Target and Walmart even.

No offense but I found nothing useful here other than your fears as a once bitten twice shy LGS owner (based on your own videos about the past year or 2 and your unhappiness with MTG products). Not trying to troll here, but all of what you said I find poorly formulated as a discussion/idea. There are no red flags I see here. All companies that make a TCG have to make their first one (as MTG did). This does not really need to compete with MTG or for that matter other TCG's as it is the backed by the company with the biggest IPs in the world. You failed to mention the creators (the specific people, not just the company) that created Lorcana, and they do have TCG experience. I have so much more to say and would love to debate this with you live on our Saturday live streams 'Cardboard Conversations'. We are live every Saturday 7pm est. If you care to talk more about this let me know and we can set something up.

I ABSOLUTELTY am a once bit twice shy LGS owner. I have taken many risks and lost a lot of money trying out TCGs over the years. Do I think Lorcana is risky? Sure. But less so than Metazoo, Argent Saga, My Hero Academia, Weiss, Cardfight Vanguard, Dragon Ball Super - I could go on. All games I've bought heavily in to just to flop.

It'll fly off the shelves initially, and the art and card layout definitely hits the spot. Longer term, do they have some TCG veterans involved to guide the mechanics and future direction of the game? How long it lasts will also depend on how long Disney wants to throw money at it!

They already do have TCG veterans involved. Ryan Miller and Steve Warner are the ones making it. The big problem is knowing if it’ll be good or not. We already know persistent damage is part of the game mechanics and characters will challenge each other. It’s leaning towards Pokémon, Hearthstone, Keyforge type of play

Biggest alarm bell and problem I always see with any new TCG trying to hit the market, "when it looks like magic and it feels like magic, why not just play magic". Because it's Disney, that's where I see it having some staying power. The only reason is because it's Disney. Gameplay wise I hope it's good. I hope because it's Disney it will stick. Only thing that bugs me about the big 3, for some reason Pokemon is easier to teach to a younger audience, Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic you get into either mature artwork and/or the mechanics are overwhelming.

It feels fairly disingenuous trying to "help" people make buying decisions when there is a clear lack of research on your part. You didn't even read what the Gift Set did when it was already pulled up on the screen and were just making inaccurate guesses. You spent a lot of time talking about RB as a company and their lack of TCG experience without mentioning the team of people that were hired specifically for this game for their experience in the space. Also you don't expound upon WHY Target partnership is a red flag, and we already know that the game is going to be released to retail, but LGS are getting it two weeks early. That would have been a good talking point from your position as a store owner. I hope you continue looking into the game and support it at your store and I appreciate your take as an LGS owner, but please do your research for future videos

Well said. I felt the exact same way. He kinda just based everything in this video off the fact that it’s a Disney property created by a company that so happens to make puzzles. @CNA-Games
@CNA-Games Жыл бұрын
I am not being disingenuous, I am giving my opinions on something based on the information given and that I can learn. It doesn't say anything about the game designers, team leads, or creative directors of the game anywhere on the website. All I have is what they give me and past performance to base my decisions off of. Also, giving me a two week jump on Target is nothing, especially when Target regularly releases new sets of Pokemon and Magic on their shelves sometimes a month before I can. They can say that, but will it even be enforced? Besides, I can't build a base to support the game in my store in two weeks. It will take months if I actually want to have a community for this game, and even then it could be a lot of effort just for them to buy it when they casually shop at big box stores. That's a small window for me to dump product before the margins go to the floor.
@sneakybuffalo

@@CNA-Games The Target opinions is exactly the kind of thing I'd have loved to here about in the video from your stance as a store owner. As for the first premise, I disagree. Idk why you didn’t seem to do your research before making this video. Organized play has been confirmed, Disney has a strong enough following and even those who aren’t the biggest Disney fans (like myself) are excited for the game because of just what has been shared about the game this far and whose working on it. We’ve seen enough for game to draw similarities between games like KeyForge and MTG and the game seems to be pretty competitive but easy to pick up (like you’d want all TCG’s to be). That doesn’t make it “for kids”. Idk where your basing your speculation off of other than “the people around me aren’t interested”. Lorcana is likely to have a different crowd of players playing the game vs other TCG’s. That’s just the nature of anything in life. That doesn’t mean it won’t be popular. I’m sure it’ll have a community of collectors and players. Especially since as you get older, collectors turn into TCG players a lot of the time. I definitely wanna collect all the cards but I’m not as interested in doing that if I’m not going to also be playing the game. Cause otherwise my cards would be sitting in a box or binder and that’s no fun.

Do you believe that the rare (thus expensive) and powerful cards of TCGs make the “playability” more difficult to newbies. Sort of a barrier to entry. More new players might dip their toes into a game if they could try play and be competitive with a true starter deck. Is there a rule set for some TCGs which only permit more basic cards to be used?

The biggest mtg values come from them being epic game Changing competitive cards usually. Dual lands, power 9, modern non reserve list cards like mox amber, ragavan, mana vault, solitude...most the expensive cards have a track record of big time competition prowess. So the first thing for value is this game needs to be played and enjoyed at a high level. The cards from mtg that are expensive and contain 0 or next to no desired playability is not as large ad people think. Reserve list value obviously wouldn't be able to apply to a new game yet

Even if the game is AMAZING the setting is just too much of a turn off for me, and I don't think I'm the only male around my age range that is of this opinion. So I can see them competing against pokemon for the younger crowd... but can Disney even compete against Pokemon?? My money would be on the electric mouse personally. I'm in the intended market for this game, I think. Disney fan yeah, disposable income yeah, play tcg yeah. But I really dislike the card designs, to the point I don't like the idea of staring at them for half an hour while I play. They're also not interesting enough for me to want a binder of them. It feels like a mtg type card but for Disney I would want more color. More boldness or pizzazz. The art style of the images is exactly what I would expect from modern Disney art and that's not a good mark in my book. I don't think this game will stick for that long. Not in this format anyway. If they shift to collectible art cards I could see it doing better and reaching a wider audience. Guess time will tell, eh?

This might come across as a bit critical and I am not trying to start an argument but I feel your video is misinformed and you drew some very wrong conclusions from your research. First, Ravensberger is a huge and very successful long standing company in the board game industry. Just because YOU are not familiar with them, think they are just a puzzle company, and have never heard of labyrinth or Scotland Yard doesn't mean to me that Ravensberger is an unknown company rather it discredits you as a knowledgeable and trustworthy source for this topic since you are discrediting this massive and successful company just because YOU'RE not a board gamer. Secondly, I fail to see how having a relationship with target is a negative. That just tells me that this game will have a massive printing and be readily available for purchase as well as potentially some target exclusive products (exclusive sleeves or playmats maybe?). Lastly, you seem to be not informed that the game will be exclusive to LGSs for the purpose of creating the community within the game stores and then a few weeks later will br massively available in the big box retail stores. You are also way off in thinking this game is targeted towards kids. The only people I have seen excited for this game has all been middle aged adults. If you think this is only for kids then you clearly do not understand the Disney brand and the Disney audience. In terms of balancing the game, you are again not informed that they have brought in CCG veterans to help design this game. It just feels to me like your conclusions drawn for "red flags" in this video are way off.

@@CNA-Gamescherry pick any companies history and you’ll find the same things. Doesn’t mean anything. If the products sells and people like it, what’s the harm? If this didn’t have Disney attached to it, I doubt you’d be so harsh on it.

Disney have so much potential. Especially with Star wars and Marvel. But i think this product is going to fail. "Ravensburger" is not the right company to do this! The cards looks so boring like a card game for 6year old kids! No Fullarts, Altarts, or anything like something that its cool to collect!

Of course it's not LGS exclusive which he'd have known if he'd did even 5 minutes of research. It DOES however release to LGS 2 weeks before big box stores because the company is trying to help them get a leg up.

Everybody is excited and pumped but nobody will play this game. It has the hype right now which most games do. There has been sooo many card games with Disney characters that nobody never played. Remember the kingdom hearts card game? LMAO! I think the cards will be collected and the player base with probably be around the size the my little pony card game was and it will die after 2 to 3 years. Ravenburger games are very simple, Villainous is basically solitaire with no true player interaction and only sells because of the ip. The fact that people continue to defend villainous as a good game and claim to be tabletop gamers is flabbergasting to me. I own the gargoyles board game, it was okay at best and the replay value is very low(hurts me to that as a gargoyles fan). The wizard of oz game and ET game are kinda meh as well. I feel like ravenburger games really aren't that great in general. Just my opinion. We will see what happens, but best believe if the gargoyles show up in this game i will buy them as singles and that's probably it. lol

Have you played Villainous, or at least consistently?? The game has a lot of strategy involved and player choices. Yah like many games, it comes down to the luck of the cards but the order in what actions you take and cards you play truly matter. It is definitely not a kids game as with the same hand draw, the more skilled player is always going to win.

@@Jschwab96 I don't like Villainous. Theres barely any player interaction for the most part, it's like solitaire with Disney characters.

@@MrToppDeck The game plays nothing like solitaire and many many MANY board games have little player interaction and are still great games. By that same logic as well, any single player video game just wouldn’t be fun. I’d argue the player interaction through the Fate cards work to slow down the other players and there’s great fun to have there.

@@Jschwab96 playing cards on my board and literally ignoring and not caring about what my opponent plays or interacts with(Date Cards) equals solitaire type gameplay to me. You don't even need to talk to your opponents in that game. Lol. Basically, I don't need to play with anybody to finish the game cards. And also, those characters are not balance at all.(but that's another conversation ) But we can agree to disagree. Villainous is just another example of a game to me that has a famous IP with boring mechanic system to me. It's literally just solitaire to me, not fun at all. Alot of potential but it fail to me in my eyes. I'm glad people do like it though, just not my cup of tea
